Howdy. Sadly, some forums in this world are dying a sad, slow death, and cannot answer questions I have in any timely manner, or at all, for that matter, forcing me to hunt down other people who know..... things. Don't take it poorly, I'm not the sociable type, and have only been a member of one forum before in my life. I DID find it just a mite ridiculous that I had to create a tougher password to sign up here than I had to make for my credit cards, though.
Anyway, my issue is with a little program known as Handbrake. Chances are most folks are familiar with this, but for the uninitiated, it allows one to rip video from DVD's, ala music from CDs.
The problem I'm having is it's selective choosing of what DVDs it will properly rip from. In this case, I had no issues ripping from say, Elfin Lied Vol.2, with proper clear sound and picture, But when I try to do it with say, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: The Friendship Express(Talk about your polar opposites), it gives a muddied, unwatchable picture.
I'm not talking copy protected DVDs, those won't even be read by Handbrake, which seems a little fishy in and of it's self.
I've noticed on the MLP:FIM disc, there is two tracks for every episode, as in track 1 and 2, when played, both play the pilot episode. Is this a form of copy protection? However, when I ripped from the DVD that came with a Figurine, which only had one title for the episode that was on it, I had no issues whatsoever with it.
Then again, when I tried to rip from The Simpsons: Season 4 or 6, I got the same result of a muddy unwatchable video, and they didn't have but one title for each episode.
Last I checked, This isn't illegal, as I supposedly have the right to make back-ups for DVD's and other forms of media I own, regardless of how much some companies try to stop me. Once they are on my computer, I can stick them all in a box and stuff them back in a dark closet somewhere.

The US copyright office does not allow "space shifting" of copyrighted content and weighs heavy that it is not a fair use provision (You woudn't know that it's fair use anyway, at least until you were sued in the first place).
Your are hitting copy protection. Your milage may very.
