Problems with Windows 8 apps hanging or taking forever to launch

I have been having problems with Windows 8 apps not launching properly on my laptop. The same apps work perfectly on my Surface Pro. It started with my Nook app taking like 2 minutes to wake up and then crashing continuously so I thought something was wrong with my B&N account. I have asked for help on all kinds of Nook support site like Nook Forum, called Barnes & Noble, Microsoft, but all they could recommend was to update the app. There were no updates for the Nook app in the Windows store though.
Then I realized other apps were doing the same thing, and now I can't launch any app at all, except native Microsoft apps (Bing, Travel, etc), but even those take a long time to launch. Is anyone else having this problem?
