i'm shopping around for a vacuum for my apartment, and i'm getting a bit bewildered by all the choices.
we've got a smallish one-bedroom apt with a 15lb dog that sheds small hairs. all i know right now is that i should be looking for a 12 amp motor, and that Dysons are overpriced POSes.
can anyone recommend a decent, not too expensive vacuum for our needs?
maybe that IS a bug...i was definitely in the H/A forum, but on a mobile browser, when i posted this.
I've seen that kind of thing happen quite a bit since the switch to Vanilla, and I always wondered why it was only the top forum on the index that got these errant threads. So you're not the first one to have this happen to them.
On-topic, I remember I read a good guide to what to look for in a vacuum the other day when I happened to be googling something about vacuums, but I don't remember what site that was on... I'll let you know if I find it again.

I dunno who told you Dysons are "overpriced POS", but they were straight talking out of their arse. Unless the brand takes a SERIOUS dive in quality, I'll never recommend anything else. They're that good.
A buddy of mine has a Dyson and he also cleans up after his huge German Shepard without issue. He also uses it to vacuum up sawdust from his wood working space.
I use a Dyson animal and some of my family works for a well known very high end expensive vacuum company, and even they acknowledge Dysons are incredible for the price for most people.
I got mine refurbished on Amazon for about $300 and had it for years. It cleans up all the pet hair incredibly well, the $2000 wet vacuum finds some stuff after but not much, whereas cheaper vacuums are just awful. I couldn't recommend anything else honestly
We've got a Dyson as well. A DC-23 turbinehead cannister vac. We paid around 350$ for it, and it was worth every penny, and has been functioning for around 4 years now without an issue. The best thing I can recommend is to try to find a friend/coworker who own one to try it out on your own floors. That's what we did before buying, and were pretty shocked at the amount of additional crud it managed to pull out of our carpets. I wouldn't be able to recommend anything else.
For point of comparison, we've got a cat that lives here, so probably a similar gauge of hair shed, though not amount. The vacuum handles it just fine.
Dyson. We got one as a gift over the holidays a couple years ago and it has been the best vacuum. I am always astonished by how much dog/cat hair it picks up as well as dirt in general. We also have a small one bedroom and I have to empty the damn thing twice before I finish vacuuming - that's a good thing.
They are pricey in comparison to other vacuums but they last forever and work extremely well. I used to think the same thing you did, that they were overpriced. I considered them the "Apple" of vacuums but if this one ever breaks down I will definitely get another.

If time is not of the essence, and you want a Dyson, I'd suggest waiting for a sale on Woot. They seem to have a Dyson vacuum on sale at least once a month. And they go for half, or more, of what they would if you bought it from Dyson.
They've got a specific model for animal hair, though I don't know if there's an actual difference between the models, or it's just marketing.
And as Entriech said, it's probably a good idea to try it out if you can before buying it.
I got this one Shark
It's expensive but it works really well. I have a deep pile carpet and it actually fluffs the damn thing while cleaning it, looks newer every time I vacuum. I have 2 pugs and those bastards shed their body weight in fur twice a day, and it gets all that out of the carpet too. It's not a Dyson, but it's sturdy and should last for quite a while.

The thing I like best about our DC11 is that it hasn't missed a beat since we got it. In fact, we'd just borrowed my mother's rather expensive German made vacuum cleaner with a powered brush head to clean our carpets as we had a rental inspection that weekend, and when we got our vacuum home and gave it a test run, it filled the barrels twice with stuff it got out of the carpet using just a turbine head AFTER the other cleaner had been used.
There's also the fact that they sell spare parts direct from their website, Amy dropped the barrels and broke them a little while ago, and a whole new assembly was only $40 or so. I actually pulled the whole unit apart when that happened to have a look at it, and it's built like a tank.
I've been very pleased with my Shark, I have 3 dogs, with both carpet and wood floors, it works well on either surface. The lift-away feature comes in handy too. If you can get your hands on a 20% off coupon from bed bath and beyond, you can get one for less than $140.
I don't think Dyson's are shit, but I do think they're serious overkill for most people who are still renting apartments. We just got rid of our vacuum during our last move, but it worked great for our 2 bedroom apartment. Usagi's been buying the same vacuum for years (not because they keep failing, just if it gets left behind during a move). It's a solid vacuum for under $100.

Dysons are fabulous but if the price point is too high, consumer reports recommended me a vaccume for about a hundred bucks. It works very well, and it was at a point in my life when I couldn't afford to drop four benjamins on a vaccum.
