Arma 2 thread can be found Here

What is ArmA?
ArmA (Armed Assault) is an military simulator created by Bohemia Interactive. Well know for the original Operation flashpoint, now called ArmA: Cold war crisis due to not owning the OFP name. This is a game where you will die in a few bullets, your health doesn't regenerate and taking damage will affect your aim. It's also well known for their large, open maps and flipping helicopters your first time flying them. The engine this game is built on is also used for actual military simulations such as VritualBattlespace 2 Link

What is ArmA 3?
ArmA 3 is the third game in the ArmA series. It takes place in the year 2030, the campaign is going to have you taking control of a British special forces officer as he helps hold off an Iranian invasion to the Greek island of Altis. Multiplayer like most ArmA games, is one of the best parts to play. I'm assuming the campaign will be co-op but we should have plenty of non campaign operations to play through as well. Word is BIS also want's to have a better PVP mode than in past ArmA games.

Features for the game include
-PhysX, this will be based off of the CPU and not the GPU. So my fellow AMD users won't be getting 5FPS for no reason.
-Underwater sections
-Various firing positions. This includes “pop up” where you can pop your head up to fire before ducking back below cover.
-Better interface and animations, including better character control.
-New lighting engine
-Stamina system changes. What you are carrying will now affect your stamina drain while moving or changing stances
-Vehicle interiors are improved upon. The drivers hands also have a little bit of animation now.

yz9fakv.jpg
ArmA 3 will be steamworks
So no matter where you purchase the game you will need steam to run it.

The Alpha
The Alpha starts March 5th and will end when beta goes live. This is scheduled for second quarter of this year. Once beta goes live the pre-order price will rise. The standard version will cost 24.99 EUR/19.99 GBP/32.99 USD. The deluxe version will cost 39.99 EUR/34.99 GBP/49.99 USD. The Supporter edition can only be purchased through Bohemia store, and the first 500 will get their name in the credits of the game 69.99 EUR/59.99 GBP/91.99 USD.

Once beta starts add an extra $10 to the price, then another $10 once the full game is launched. Everyone who pre-orders will get 3 invites go vie out the week after the alpha is launched. This will let someone play with the single player portion with limited editor use. The alpha lite is good from march 14th- June 18th

Will be getting the "Supporter Edition", on the surface it looks like a "donation" version, but it includes all future DLC.. and in Arma 2's case they had several.

    Really looking forward to this.

ArmA is the sort of thing that I've never had the time to really get into. If I were still in high school I'd be all over this shit, or even if I had a normal 9 to 5 job or something, but I just don't have the free time to devote to something awesome like the more extensive ArmA multiplayer stuff that groups like ShackTac do. Oh well.

Yea, but look at the fidelity in comparison. Arma 2 stands no contest against 3. The lighting video in particular, and the overall texture and shader quality is vastly improved. Not to mention, everything else.

You don't have to join a milsim community to enjoy the game. It can simply be played like a "more realistic" Battlefield.

Arma 2 was very poorly optimized as well.

I have to join a milsim community to enjoy the game. If I wanted a "more realistic" Battlefield I'd just play Insurgency or Red Orchestra or some other game that doesn't have janky as fuck controls and horrific performance. ArmA is attractive because it's where the grognards are, so to speak.

  • kozmokozmo Titan VRegistered User regular

It's "attractive" because it's the premiere technological powerhouse for any game on the market.
There are tons of people that like it, you don't need to be a "grognard", shut-in or unemployed to play Arma. You can tool around with the editor for an hour or two and have some fun there. Multiplayer has servers with variations of matches & game types and most of them are fun. None of them require you to be a milsim fanatic or expert to join.

If you don't like it, then you don't like it. It's not a pick up and play game, that's why people like it. It's not supposed to be like Battlefield, and it's never tried to be Call of Duty. Operation Flashpoint (the original), Arma's younger brother, came out 2 years before Call of Duty ever existed. It has never tried to be a "more realistic" anything, that is just hater-speak.

What it is, is a technically superb psuedo-simulation, and also a modder's dream. This game has one of the strongest modding toolkits and communities out there outside of Bethesda games, and it's for that very reason that something like DayZ exists.

It's kind of difficult to call it a simulation without agreeing that it aspires to achieve a high level of realism, which is somewhat irrelevant since realism in this context is almost entirely an emergence of the meta game. So it's inherently no more of a simulation than any other open world first person shooter. Battlefield is also an open world first person shooter, so the comparison is apt.

Now it may have more multiplayer potential than other first person shooters which attracts the milsim community (ie the editor and modding tools), but at its core it's still a first person shooter.

That being said I'm going to purchase, and play the shit out of it.

I didn't say you had to be a milsim fanatic to play ArmA III. I said I did. I'm sure there are all sorts of things people do in ArmA aside from pretending to be a Green Beret, but I'm not really interested in that stuff. I actually own ArmA II (Green Man Gaming gave it out for free at around the time ArmA II Free Version for Cheap People® came out) but I have barely gotten any use out of it because the milsim stuff that interests me is something I don't really have the time for.

One of the things I'll say is that ShacTac only plays scenarios together one day a week to my knowledge.

So the time investment from them isn't massively huge. Not to say you can fit it in, just that you don't have to dedicate life and soul to the game if you have a decent community.

Otherwise checking in. Going to be buying the Alpha tommorow, hyped for sitting on butt while shooting.

I'm more worried about whether they have effectively added to their Goat vs armed man warfare.

It's the key aspect of the game obviously.

I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate, but this game's infantry combat feels like Arma 2's sense of helplessness and need for tactics plus visuals that are comparable to BF3. I mean, maybe Arma 3's graphics aren't on BF3's level but the fluidity of the game (animations and so on) are pretty slick.

I played Arma 2 for all of 20 or so hours within its release week on Conquest with a bunch of PA players and DayZ a lot more than that, and I can definitely see myself getting into the tactical side of Arma 3. And I haven't even touched the other levels in the alpha!

Bought this on a hunch. Based on the first two "showcase" levels, it works far better as a game than the last two installments did. If they do the singleplayer right, it could be like the second coming of Operation Flashpoint, only with ArmA-level multiplayer potential.

Runs decently even on my mid-end computer, too. I'm happy about that.

The dialog system is better this time than in the previous games. Sounds a little more natural with less awkward pauses. No female soldiers, no barter menu but the gear system is now a drag and drop system. The only gripe to have about this is if you want to take a attachment off another gun you have to drop your weapon, pick up the other weapon, and pull the attachment off then pick up your gun and put it on. The bug men are disguised as OPFOR. Have a video showing better mouse control

Edit: one of the devs tweeted that if your trying to loot primary weapon ammo, you have to double click their vest in the inventory screen and the ammo will be their.

Literally no one other than me will care about this, but I'm super impressed with their inclusion of a menu to configure the color and opacity of HUD elements. Because I'm one of precisely 7 people who play PC games on a plasma TV to avoid LCD motion blur, I really appreciate when a developer considers that a user may have a reason to not want static bright white elements on their screen for hours at a time.

*Edit: I maybe spoke too soon about everything being customizable... If you're the squad leader the icons at the bottom left don't listen to the opacity settings you picked for the HUD elements. Still, I get the feeling that the intention is for the "Colors" tab to eventually include options for all UI elements, even the menus.

I mean, maybe Arma 3's graphics aren't on BF3's level but the fluidity of the game (animations and so on) are pretty slick.

That's my impression so far as well. It plays and looks much smoother now, but maintains Arma 2's relatively high level of realism. I haven't played it enough to have any impressions beyond that yet, but to be honest that's a pretty decent accomplishment on its own.

I love the way that literally any rock is now viable cover due to the body shifting system. I set up two infantry squads to fight in a small town while I watched as a civilian and I was impressed that the AI was taking cover against building corners and leaning round them.

Twice a week, and each mission can be as short as 20 minutes, or as long as several hours. You're right in that you don't have to dedicate your entire life.

On another note, I'll be making some quick co-op missions to run with people tonight.

Basically he trims it to keep it all on one servers limit. Which in ArmA 2 is around 130ish.

I understand where he's coming from with wanting that tight knit community but at the same time I wish Shack Tac were more open with what assets and scenarios/mods were being run for their gameplay.

Still I'll probably play a ton of co-op scenarios with you guys at some point.
