    Okay, Alpha got.

Do we have a Steam group or something to organise some stuffs? I'd love to muck about a lot.

So... is this the wrong place to ask for a "lite" invite when they go out?

I'll probably end up buying it, and when I do I'll pay it forward with my own invites, if that helps...

For people asking how..it's not that hard. Make an @ARMA2 folder, inside that, make an Addons folder. Put in all the stuff from "addons" in ArmA 2 directory, all those PBOs and BISIGN files. I recommend you then delete "editor.pbo" and its .bisign files. Enjoy, even though there are a few problems.

Where do I put the @ARMA2 folder?

    A:\Programs (x86)\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Arma 3\

Then go to Steam Library, Right Click on your A3 Alpha, under General tab, click SET LAUNCH OPTIONS... and add the line:

    -mod=@ARMA2;

Will be buggy!!! GUI functions will fight each other, but you can mess around a bit... Have fun!

So I got this. I had a hard time with Arma 2. It was very intimidating. This is a lot better! I am having a ton of fun learning how to fly a helicopter. I got the flying and shooty bits down now I just need to hover better and figure out how to land without exploding.

I can't wait to see the mods that come out for this.

I never did much with the editor in Arma 2. Just now I put together a scenario with two enemy quadbikes enroute to a building I told them to hold. Blew them the fuck up with my baby helicopter. It was a simple scenario but it was a lot of fun!

Just picked this up and its great -- way less buggy that I expected, and running very smoothly, at least in single player. Hopping around in the Oh-9 heli is a blast, feels like just the right balance between arcade-y and flight sim. But I'm getting quite consistent multiplayer CTDs. So I guess that means its time to explore the editor until that gets fixed...

From some scientific testing I did yesterday*, it appears this happens when you play as a rabbit.

*Fucked up in the editor and spawned myself in as a rabbit accidentally. An interesting point of view on the little war between two factions it had.

Can't say I'm as happy with the whirly gigs FM at the moment (it's dropped in from arma 2) and to me is 100% arcade, but everything I have read including posts on bis's forums from a dev indicates that the Take On Helicopters FM is coming. There is a thread on the bis alpha forums indicating there was a discussion earlier that stated there was some work to do to integrated it and it probably wouldn't make it in until the beta. Personally I can't wait as flying in the current model is kinda a chore for me, but I'm a flight simmer:)

I was just doing some more reading... found the post that was referenced in a recent discussion and things are a little hazy. You have the devs saying TKOH FM will be in and default (in one thread). You have a dev saying it will be in but default models might not use it or something like that (in another thread). It's a little confusing. It would be a war crime for them not to include it after the work on it in TKOH as it will simply make the game MUCH better and and novice settings really isn't much harder then A2's. Actually, almost easier as it makes more sense. I personally think they should just scrap the A2 FM and use TKOH FM with variable settings, but I'm next to sure that's not happening (imho silly) and they will keep both FM's as a option.

Take On Helicopters is a game that I've wanted but it's never gotten discounted enough for me to pull the trigger. If they put in the flight model from that game into here that would be very cool.

Anyone else having trouble changing the difficulty?

I keep customizing it (turning off crosshairs, etc.) but it always reverts back to normal. Is this my failing or a glitch?

  • therattlebagtherattlebag Registered User regular
I should have a look at the demo for TKOH again. I used to flight sim quite a bit and I wouldn't mind seeing things like ground effect etc implemented. Certainly as an option anyway. Does the Arma2 FM have the capability to simulate sling loads? Long-lining supplies into hostile territory would be epic...

Works for me... are you making sure to click OK. Esc will cancel changes.

I've seen it in youtubes with ace, but I don't think it changes flight dynamis although I don't know for sure.

Yeah, I got it to work now. I must have been not hitting OK, though I could have sworn I did. That's vidja game 101; rookie mistake.

Oh, and in other news, I was swimming around mostly naked (because I found out you can totally take your BDU's off and I was stoked), and when I came up on land I continued swimming, much to my delight.

I haven't played ArmA 1 or ArmA 2, but from the looks of ArmA 3, it seems I was the only one left in the world who really, really liked the fact that in the original Operation Flashpoint you could move your weapon slightly without ever moving your body? It made the game feel more like a simulation and less like every other shooter... but now, they are touting the fact that they are like just every other shooter as a feature?

Can you revert to the old control method or does everyone these days have the butt of the gun surgically fastened to their foreheads?

Heard the proposition that RIAA and MPAA should join forces and form "Music And Film Industry Association"?

It's been a very long time since I've played Operation Flashpoint so I might not entirely know what you are referring to, but here goes:

I think you are referring to deadzone aiming. If it's like the previous games, then there is an option in the menu to lower and decrease this. I haven't actually looked very thoroughly through ArmA 3's options yet, but I know ArmA 2 had the option for sure.

Edit - Just looked it up, the aiming deadzone is still an option in ArmA 3.

Edit edit - I can't remember how to embed videos :(

Edit edit edit - In PA forums, video embeds itself! Good lord, sometimes I fail at this internet business...

You can do the opposite which is move your viewpoint without the gun moving. If you hold down alt you can look independent of anything your mouse was controlling.

If you want games that do have that feature though go hunt down Red Orchestra 2 and I think Insurgency as a mod has it.

    Control settings, aiming dead zone.

First thing I turn off in ArmA games because it makes it a hell of a lot harder to aim fast with any kind of precision. There's a good reason the standard is "crosshair in the middle of the screen".

The helicopter was originally tilted the other way. We tried to right it with the car so we could repair it and use it. Two seconds later the chopper lit on fire and immediately blew up killing us all.

sorry, in the shack tac "Tango Delta Mike" video. It looks like the video was taken after the fighting occurred, because there are quite a few choice shots of footage from mulitple engagements.
That is very very hard to do in the heat of the moment, even as a spectator, but if it was a reviewable after action report, you could scrub the timeline back and forth and find those engagements
and set up your camera properly.

Could be worse, could be negative mouse acceleration.

The only time that has ever worked in a game ever is in Killzone 3 because of the weight it added to your bulky space marines.

I'm so glad it's gone from ArmA.

This is definitely one of my least favorite aspects of "realistic" shooters, since realistically you'd be moving your weapon with your head when at the low ready.
