So,
Thief is officially coming back! Instead of being Thief IV, it's doing the whole in-vogue reboot thing, which I guess I'm okay with? So long as Garrett's still a bit of a bastard and the mythology is un-fucked-with, I can live with it.
There's a whole mess of screenshots! Marvel at Garret's poncy new Soul Reaver mouth mask:
Gaze upon an upper-crust mansion party, think "Gee, that seems kinda Dishonored-y," then remember that Dishonored ripped off parts of Thief wholesale, then wonder if ripping off someone who ripped you off is noble, justified/forgivable, or silly:
Gird your loins for some sweet, sweet, lockpicking action:
So, I'm cautiously optimistic, but mainly I wanna go back and play Thief 2 with some high-res texture mods and shit. How 'bout y'all?

Also Garret is the best.
I think they're just keeping to the spirit of the franchise
(thanks for making this thread, I was far too lazy/at work)

(an 8-page article on Shalebridge Cradle is yet another reason I love Kieron Gillen)
that's been the rumor forever and the RPS guys are saying as much. They're as close to proper journalists as I've seen in the industry so I'm assuming they've got confirmation of that from somewhere.
I was reading RPS' brief missive on the Arma 3 alpha, and there's a bit in there about how, when crouched or prone, you've got fine-tuned control over your body position and view point. Allowing you to peek out of cover, for instance, without having to toggle between the extremes of standing and kneeling. I would love for something like that to factor into a new Thief, though how you'd get precision like that on a console controller is a pretty big question mark
-Developed by Eidos-Montreal, who also did Human Revolution
-Only platforms listed so far are PS4 and PC and "other next-gen consoles." So, the new XBox.
-During the time of the game, The City is under the rule of "an iron-fisted Baron" and his militarized watch. The wealthy are well-protected, the poor are shit out of luck.
-Eidos is claiming that Garrett's model is so detailed, you can zoom in on his hands and see his fingerprints. I'm still trying to decide if that's cool, or really silly.
-There'll be navigation beacons. Booooooo.
-The game will be "toning down" the magical elements. Booooooooo.
-There's a gameplay mechanic called "Focus." I'll just type up the whole description of it. "Focus lights up the screen and highlights pipes you can climb or candles you can put out to darken the room. As you upgrade your Focus you will get a bigger radius of things to see. We have a fingerprints system that will give you hints on which drawers are worthwhile to look in. Every drawer in the room is accessible, but you use your Thief skills like CSI to figure out where the valuables are." Hrm.
-Supplies and equipment are upgradable
-Water arrows are now dry-ice arrows, but serve the same function. There are smoke arrows to serve as distraction or cover.
-Instead of the light gem, your visibility is indicated by a darkness creeping into the corners of the frame.
-There's a hub world and side quests
-The enemy AI "knows" the maps, and will check obvious hiding spots
-Getting found by guards is more forgiving. Booooooooooooooooooooooo.
-While fighting in Focus mode, you can chain together precision strikes "modeled... after the boxing scenes in Guy Ritchie's recent Sherlock Holmes films." Ugh.
-"We want you to play as a thief, but we don't want to force you to play as a thief. You can play the game aggressively if you want, but it won't be easy." You don't want to force people to play as a thief... in a game called Thief. Wh... What?
Gonna need to recalibrate my expectations, it sounds like. I know expecting something as unforgiving, open, and deliberate as Thief 2 was wishful thinking, but they seem to be latching onto current trends hardcore. The leap feels less like Deus Ex to DE:HR and more like Fallout to Fallout 3. Which could still turn out really well, obviously. Just gonna take some getting used to.
I just ordered dishonoured as I am cheap and want to buy it for a third of the price.
Satans..... hints.....
That actually sounds really cool as a concept, but yeah not at all something I'd be after in a Thief game.
Steam ID - VeldrinD
Satans..... hints.....
Hopefully I will go through the entire game without seeing a precision strike.
If you're playing a modern action-adventure game, you're getting QTEs, glowing navigation markers, context-sensitive melee takedowns, experience points and upgradable gear, whether you like it or not.
Yeah, I was really hoping for an experience that was heavier on the stealth and exploration aspects.
Certainly would have been good in Dishonored, as a non-lethal option.
Disagree button. Pressing it so hard that it breaks.
I would describe my reaction to reading these development plans as 'extremely wary'.
I miss when games would let me play them
I guess they're more fun this way.
In all fairnitude, you don't have to use most of those features in a lot of games that have them.
Was so glad to see Dishonored lets you switch all that crap off. I hate screen clutter.
Well, considering that most of us who played theif probably quick loaded as soon as we were caught, I really hope the new fighting mechanics are to help out players who don't want to do that rather than to water down the solid stealth experience.
I'm staying cautiously optimistic.
Well, no, no really. But they are more cinematic this way.
This is what I liked about dishonored. You could turn off quest markers, and it was wonderful.
Anybody else remember, very early in Bafford's mansion in the first game, opening a chest and receiving a worthless plate, which you would then have to carefully set down or risk making a lot of noise?
I'm not saying it's impossible for the reboot to recapture those feelings (though the passing of time will have dulled their severity, which ain't anybody's fault but nature's), but I just have a hard time picturing that same heart-in-the-throat panic in a game where you slow-mo MMA your way out of scrapes. Thief could kill you in the training, if you didn't watch your step.
But yeah, the game was definitely not meant to be exploited that way.
really would like to hear what they think about dishonored, honestly
is it just like fuck those guys
Given that I didn't really get heavily into PC gaming until in the 2000s, I only really got into Deadly Shadows, which was super fun.
I've got the whole franchise on Steam, but the first two games have really not aged very well and the graphics are just so clunky that it's really difficult to get into it.
It doesn't help that the games don't really run well at all on dual-core processors and I'm forced to manually tinker with the process settings in order to run the game at all.
Imitation is the highest form of flattery, they say.
And I really did enjoy the stealth elements of Dishonored.
I liked that it was relatively easy to get caught.
Whereas in Deadly Shadows it was almost impossible as long as you were cautious.
