Well, there you go. Love him or hate him, he has been a pretty important figure in Latin American and even world politics for the last decade or so. His anti-US rhetoric, his leading the region to the political left wing, friendship with Cuba, a coup attempt, savior of the proles, nationalizing the economy into the ground...

Talk about him, his life and his politics here.

Prediction: successor will re-stabilize power at the expense of having to dole out more goodies to selected supporters; increased corruption will eventually lead to political instability.

In order to address that prediction I shall send some Arabs over, come Spring.

He started off well and then fucked up, and left-wingers rarely praised him after that but right-wingers always insisted we did, because their mothers all smoked asbestos while they gestated.

There's a trace of Thailand here, really. Albeit the coup in Venezuela failed rather than succeeded.

That's what assassinations are for. Wasn't America a partner in that failed coup attempt?

I'm sure he didn't help poor people in the U.S. get heating oil for cheap just out of the goodness of his heart, but I'm glad he did it anyways.

I never got a good read in Chavez. The American government hated him, and he did some fucked up shit.

On the other hand a greater percentage of his people supported him. Hell, he polled better than Obama.

His nation didn't start any stupid wars. If anything, he seemed to help calm down the region. That's a lot better record than our good friends and allies in Egypt did.

Is Venezula in a better place now than before him? Hard to tell. Is it a better place than it would be had it been run by its oligarchs? Past evidence of behavior says it is.

So let's say you rule a country, and your political ideology is "A".

And it just so happens that someone whose political ideology is "-A". This guy really dislikes your guts. He hates you so much he attempts a coup d'etat against you.

    He fails, and gets arrested.

He gets elected six years later.

By the way, you're sitting on the fifth largest reserve of crude oil in the entire world. You still manage to be defeated .

    Congratulations, you're Venezuela's pre-Chavez political elite.

For all his (many) faults, Chavez' antecessors were much much worse than him.

Cancer is awful, and I'm saying that as someone who's lost, let's count, 3 relatives in the last 14 weeks to it, with another probably in the next month or so and 3 possibly in the next 2-3 years. I wouldn't wish that death on anyone, and I hope he didn't suffer. I hope he got time with his family, and that there wasn't a long period where he was no longer aware of his surroundings.

    Politically, though: good riddance.

Well, another one of the colourful political personas that inhabited this century bites the dust. I'd like to say that Venezuela will probably be better off without his governance, but realistically speaking, they probably won't.

    And that's a damn shame.

Alright and in this next scene all the animals have AIDS.

I got a little excited when I saw your ship.

There is a human tragedy here , and that should not be ignored, but politically, this is probably a net win for the US.

What's a net win for the US doesn't mean its a good thing. The US has a really shitty reputation with Latin America for a reason.

This thread title is uninspired. Should at least try for a "Chavez down, begins dictator rule of three" joke.

Or something like "Venezwailing: Chavez RIP".

    "Chavez: El Presidente de muerte."

"Chavez Death: 'Cancer' is a strange way to spell 'drone strike'"

"Chavez Casualty Causes Consternation Concerning Cuban Cancer Cure"

    Uh, no.

Such a persuasive argument. You don't think with all the western influence, oil money, and general corporate fuckery that Latin America hasn't been getting the short end of the stick as far as leadership?

Chavez himself wasn't exactly a saint either with nationalizing corporations and buying the poor. Didn't he also try and declare himself a dictator?

Frankly, Chavez was the second worst president in present Latin America (behind Cristina Kirchner).

I also enjoy how "giving food" to the poor means "buying" the poor.

Oil money? Oil in Latin America = oil in Venezuela. No other country has "oil money" (with the exception of Brazil).

And no, he didn't declare himself a dictator. He was elected last year. Mr. Capriles expressed his condolences over the death of Chavez.

The funny thing about Chavez is that, for all his hate of America, he never really did much to effect us. I never had strong feelings on him, beyond being annoyed when Americans made it Out like he was a hero. Otherwise? I cared enough to resent the heating oil thing, but not enough to avoid citgo stations.

I am shocked (Shocked!) to learn that your level of concern for particular political issues was inadequate to prompt you to alter your behavior.

    That's so uncharacteristic of you.
