Ah...Dragon Quest 8. 'Tis a fine game, it feels like a fantasy classic. Great graphics, great music, great story...It's all there. So why didn't I finish it? Anyways, I'm 5 hours in right now (about the same area I stopped last time) and I'm loving it. It's not a blast to grind for experience or gold, but it happens only so often so it's not too bothersome. Still, I could do without it.
Never played it, but I always think Dragon Ball whenever I see it.
Not that that's a bad thing though.
It oozes retro style. From the battles to the story (the latter is actually a good thing, though), I haven't found a single flaw in it outside of nitpicking. It's fantastic, and probably pretty cheap now.
Very careful featherlight application of a cheating device once or twice during the course of the game would probably make it much easier to play through completely.
I've always found it to help in every Dragon Question game I've played before this one, I bet it would help in this one as well.

All I would change is how little gold and XP the monsters dropped to reduce the constant grinding, and switch some of the voice actors out, as they were BAAAD.
Otherwise, a great fucking game.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
I always get confused when I hear people talk about the grind. The only time I ever did anything close to grinding was at the very start, when I leveled the hero and Yangus to level 5. I dunno if I just went through the game underleveled and got really lucky so I never noticed or what, but I found that just going from place to place and exploring the dungeons thoroughly got me more than enough experience.
This is, I must say, without doing the super secret boss in the bonus dungeon. When I did that, I did grind.
A question: Are you not supposed to get some sort of an intro scene that sets up the first in-game scene? As in, the reason why Yangus and The Hero got together and decided to help the King. I get the feeling I accidentally skipped the intro or something. Or maybe it's just meant to be realized later, I dunno.

It comes up later.
Ah, cool. Thanks. Now, I never touch the thread again for fear of spoilers. Farewell.
