SimCity has had a seriously rocky launch, but is it ready now?Answer here!
SimCity? What's that?
This game is the latest in a series of city management games that date back to 1989 (yes, the franchise is 24 years old). The original was created by Will Wright, a man whose name is virtually synonymous with sim games (SimCity (1989), SimEarth, SimAnt, SimLife, The Sims, and Spore were all him).
SimCity (2013) claims to be the most expansive city management game yet, with your decisions not only impacting the city you're working on (and all of its citizens), but all the cities in the region as well. And those cities can effect yours, too!
Multiplayer?
As a new addition to the series, SimCity has added the ability to invite other players to manage the cities in your region. Regions can support up to 16 city plots - so you could play with 15 of your closest internet friends. Interested?
Sign up to play with us! The multiplayer isn't twitched-based or anything, so don't stress about latency or lag or whatever. It lets you cooperatively build cities with other players in the region, sharing power or pollution or police forces or whatever.
I heard there was draconian DRM.
SimCity is Origin-only, and requires you to be connected to their service in order to play. So the short answer is: "Yes". The longer answer is: "SimCity is a live service that simulates real time updates from new challenges to new features and content." The devs also claim that a lot of simulation stuff is being handled "by the cloud", and there's a lot being simulated. It's possible.
What can I do with this game?
Generalize or specialize. From the web site:
For the first time, create truly unique cities with different specializations. Mayors seeking intelligent Sims can build a college town full of libraries, community colleges and universities. Specialize in Big Business such as Casinos, Electronics, Coal, Trade, and more to increase the wealth of your city. Each specialization has major benefits but consequences as well. Educated Sims unlock technologies that will benefit your region, but large universities are expensive to maintain. Casinos will bring tourism and raise Simoleons but also attract unwanted crime.
You can also visit disasters upon your citizens. Aliens, earthquakes, giant monsters, meteors, tornadoes, and introducing - zombies!
I want to watch people play the game!Good news! They're streaming live play every day until release. Go watch, vote on events to happen, participate via Twitter and get the city named after you or get your initials carved into the city.

For medium wealth and high wealth sims, the optimum tax rate is respectively 11 percent and 10 percent.
I am still confused by the whole 'I have 100k population but only 9k of them work and some of my industrial companies keep asking for more workers.'
It also seems that with an expo center, you can only have a max of 1500 of each level of wealth attending the event. So in order to get 3000 people you need 1500 low income and 1500 medium income or a mixture of them all.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, uninstalling and reinstalling origin but to no avail. I tried repair and nadda.
So now the entire thing is just unplayable. Fantastic.
No details on it yet.
Well i was keen on starting up a renewable city, so I might make it a university/electronics focused city.
Also, apparently I need a formal invite to get in to Delta 4 - unless i'm doing it wrong.
This is purely a guess, but if they follow their previous promotions they won't include new releases in the list of games you get for free.
Again, purely a guess based off of what I've seen in the past.
I just bulldozed 40k population worth of residential and the remainder of my industrial to plop down four more smelters. Upwind of my high wealth, high density residential. This is going to end well. =]
Please tell me great works aren't bugged... I've got twenty metal trucks that have gone to the arcology, but they just stay there and it doesn't show any progress on the metal bar. =[
I'm online right now, and it's no problem. The last city I built was smogtacular so I'm keen to try something that's as carbon neutral as possible.
Edit: Clicking you and trying to join appears not to work. Claims I need to be invited.
'As soon as its ready' - Seems to be the current patch cycle. They are patching daily right now. However its mainly fixes to crashes and updating servers, with a few tweaks here and there. They haven't announced an actual patch scheduled or a ETA on bug fixes. Mostly because they don't likely want more things for people to attack.
This is what will happen if they do:
Action: They show a list of things they're working on with an rough ETA
Community Action:
- "WHY ISN'T X ON THE LIST, THIS IS WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN Y!!!!!"
- "THAT IS TOO LONG!!111 THAT IS AN EASY FIX! I AM A 14 YEAR OLD WITH ZERO UNDERSTANDING OF HOW COMPLEX A GAME ENGINE IS BUT FEEL I COULD DO A BETTER JOB THEN YOU!"
- "THIS GAME IS BROKEN WHY ARE YOU NOT PATCHING DAILY!!!!!"
and god help them if they're working on something but it takes longer and they make a smaller patch. Then people just say they were lying. Eventually they'll get the bugs fixed. For now most of us are enjoying the game and working around the traffic issues and casino bugs.
Nevermind, I am functionally retarded. Invite sent from region view!
You should be able to invite from the region view. Just click on an unclaimed spot (doesn't matter which one) and one of the options next to "Claim city" is "Invite friends"

That did it, thanks both of you.
Be aware that specialization buildings have requirements such as "7 industrial buildings" or "5 tech industrial buildings" etc...
Also, with current region play being wonky, your residents are going to complain about no places to shop.
@jdarksun I can't add you to my friend's list because it says you are already at maximum.
You can get away with no shops by just lower taxes. The low wealth class is pretty lenient and forgiving. Easy to exploit too.
@infinity56 Hey, who started the region we're playing in? We should invite more people, I'm alone in my corner of the region
Chances are, you don't have enough low wealth sims for your number of low tech factories and too many mid- and high wealth sims.
My population has grown back by 30k. Seems like so long as you have no unemployment and good service coverage, your sims will forgive anything.
Not sure what is wrong with the arcology building, but my resource trucks drove there and stayed there, just about bankrupting me as my supply line broke down and trade came to a stop. Had to put a hold on it for now. With emergency bonds, I came within an hour of a failed city.
It also may be that they are having trouble getting to the job opportunities in a timely fashion. They will ideally move into residence close to the job but if that residence is crappier than others they will move into the one to their liking.

Here is the overhead view of my city. Is there anything I can do to reduce the traffic coming in?
http://i.imgur.com/YA8Yu3D.jpg
I'm not sure how this happened.
It's also a shame I can't just dump parks in the middle of a lot but instead am forced to snap it on to a road sacrificing homes and precious space.
A train station + municiple bus station did it for me. I have over 4k commuters from other cities in daily via the train and about 3k from buses from other cities and has lessened the strain on the roads.
I have about 80% of my city using public transport. However I have 9k an hour in public transportation going.
I had a problem in one city where it didn't seem like my school buses would cross an avenue. Is that a thing?
Give them other ways to get to your city other than the road. Also place a park and ride at the entrance to the city (not sure if the bus depot itself works as well for that, but the buses themselves might create major traffic with it that close to the entrance)

1. You've got an intersection coming right off the highway. This will back up traffic.
2. You've got a bunch of pointless intersections. You could turn those into 90deg curves instead.
All the jobs are on the right side while everything else is residential with a smattering of commercial. Removing the intersection will cause problems for the sims on the left. The population might be low enough to allow for it though.
I will need to check and see if the neighboring cities in the region are also connected by rail or if that will just give me extra sims.
Yeah, sometimes they seem to get caught in a rollback loop or something, and then you're in trouble.
