That's Heroes of Might and Magic. A spin-off to the original series. The main games started out in 1986 and are a veritable piece of gaming history, defining its specific type of computer role-playing games alongside Wizardry. Yet, the company who originally developed them had to close in 2003 due to the bankruptcy of its then mother company. Making Might and Magic IX the last title in the series. Ubisoft bought the license, but focused on developing the Heroes of Might and Magic Games and the action inspired Dark Messiah. Until today.
Who's developing this?
Limbic Entertainment. Current Developer of Heroes VI DLC.
Why should I be interested in it?
While Limbic's trackrecord is spotty at best, previous to helping out on Hereos VI, there is a lot of obvious passion going into this product as demonstrated by the interviews. So, give it a chance. Aside from that they are really pushing the old-school angle, including turn-based combat and a fully explorable world (after the tutorial area).
Can you give me some more information about the series?
Well, Ubisoft is currently doing a retrospective on their facebook page, so you might want to check that out. GOG has all of them for purchase. My personal recommendation are the World of Xeen games (MMIV and V) and my favourite, Might and Magic VI.
If this is a first person blobber I will happily wear my cat on my head for a week. More likely this will end up as a third person action rpg set in the M&M world.
Well, Ubisoft hasn't used any American developers for their games in the franchise. Heroes 5 was developed by Nival, a Russian company. Dark Messiah was developed by Arkane, a French company. Heroes 6 was developed by Black Hole, a Budapest company. Clash of Heroes was developed by Capy, a Canadian company. They also tried to do two online games, one in France and one in China. The browser based Heroes game they're working on right now is being developed by German companies.
I'm curious at what makes you @C2B so sure that it's not Obsidian. Ubisoft too protective of the IP? Obsidian tied up elsewhere?
I'm not *so sure*. It's certainly possible and Ubisoft was mentioned as a publisher they talked to, but after South Park recently went to Ubisoft, Obsidian made this tweet.
@SUPERT0FUBOY No... don't have an update yet though. We've barely met our contacts at Ubi, so it'll be a bit before things gets sorted.
Ofc, this could just mean in regards to SP:TSOT itself.
... Christ, MMVI: The Mandate of Heaven was my childhood. Also, my parents owned the original MM1. I have all their maps...
I don't know if I should be excited or vastly angry and disappointed.
There's literally zero reasons (so far) to be angry and/or disappointed.
There is absolutely no chance whatsoever that there won't be some (fairly small for the audience) outcry when they finally do show it because, you know, it's bringing back an old franchise and when that happens, no matter how good a game is, it isn't good enough for 'fans'. So that will happen anyway. It doesn't mean that it won't be a good game (it doesn't mean that it will be a good game either...)
I'm just saying there's no reason to have any sort of negative reaction to the announcement. It's not like the series stopped on anything resembling a high point.
The X being made up all sorts of icons and portraits from past games though gives me hope.
EDIT: And not really important but it feels weird that VI was someones childhood; that was my first year of college

You never will please everybody, but its certainly possible to please most if you stay (somewhat) true to the original series. See: King's Bounty and X-Com (After it was released).

For sure.
also the irony of my trepidation is that I'm actually pretty sure the original games had a LOT of problems, addictive and fun as they were :\a
... I hope they bring back the wooden flute thing though.

Yeah I don't want a reinvention of the wheel (though FO3/NV...), as I said in the industry thread; I'd be fine with a 'smaller' more Legend of Grimrock modern/oldschool take on it and keep it simple.
I'm excited to see what they do with it either way. I'm pretty forgiving though, even for games/series that were my childhood, than a lot of folks (even around here) are.
I never 'got' the Ultima games, oddly, though they probably should have been right up my alley way back when; so I don't know if this 'counts', but yeah.
So they had this weird 'tease' on their facebook page (Might & Magic) awhile back (December?) talking about how worlds have already been destroyed in the history of Might & Magic, and that it could happen again.
With Shades of Darkness coming out and continuing the story of Raelag in V (I think? That's my understanding, but they could just be completely fucking with the canon at this point because VI happened well before V, but Raelag was in the time of V...) maybe they're closing that whole era, and X could start something new?
It's really a shame that Might and Magic IX didn't follow the Heroes 4 stories and M&M X will be taking place in the Ubisoft universe. Despite Heroes 4's problems, they did focus more on the story and the campaigns were pretty well written.
Even though I'm one of those lowly beings who didn't discover the series until VI, I'm pretty excited about this.
I realize that the games back then might not make a gracefull transition into today, but I sure would like to try out a party based (w)RPG with todays tech/usability.
The closest I think I've come is probably SWtOR.
Hell, if all this game does is resault in bringing back the Y(ell) button, to tell NPC:s to get out of my (door)way, I'll me happy.
But I assume that technology has forever been lost. Otherwise we surely would have seen that in games like Skyrim, right?

Did you try 6? It's the best one. Black Gate fans can suck it.
Not really, Black Gate is pretty fun too. But False Prophet is the best one. It's about racism!
And if you don't get Ultima, you should still read this and its sequels.
Anyway, I played 4-8 of M&M (6 is also the best here, I think), never got the allegedly horribly buggy 9. Unfortunately I really did not like Heroes 5, so I'm skeptical about Ubisoft. We'll see who develops this.
The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

But Skyrim does have the ability to yell to get NPCs out of your way. It even has ragdoll effects that weren't possible when the command was first invented, meaning that they don't have to reuse the walk animation.
Edit: Hang on, some of you actually like Kite & Magic 6?
Is that a PC only feature?
(I haven't found it on the x360 yet.)
Either way, too few games use that feature. Or allow me to add notations to the map.
Gawd how I miss that.
Edit: Hang on, some of you actually like Kite & Magic 6?
Running backwards shooting bows at monsters took up a not-insignificant portion of my playtime in that game.
Still a blast. I don't think I explored everything there was in MM6, even after hundreds of hours. There's all sorts of hidden things.
And the game is hard as nails too.
I am pretty sure I DID explore everything in that game, and it took me like three damn years. My mom had to put a hard limit on how long I was allowed to play per day.
Also, running backwards with bows? Please.
Mowing down Gold dragons with four laser rifles and everyone with Rifle Mastery.

Last time I played it I basically ignored bows. Not magic, but bows. Harder! Well, until you get master air/water.

M&M VI and VII were pretty much how I got into RPGs. They were both awesome. VIII... the less said about VIII the better. Never played or even looked closely at IX.
HoMM died to me when they blew up Erathia, and I never bought another HoMM game.

Or the Fireball Bow. There was that too.
I spammed Fireballs against groups of two or more enemies. The splash damage hurt, but it hurt a hell of a lot less than spending any amount of time in melee combat.
I never did play the originals, but I did buy the Limited Edition of Mandate of Heaven that came with all the old games. I eventually went on a tear and beat 6 7 and 8 basically in a row. I bought 9 but, ugh... could never really get into it, and when I tried to revisit the game after XP came out I think, the engine had lots of trouble with more modern systems, so I never really got back to it. Which is weird because I'm pretty sure it was the Lithtech engine from No One Lives Forever? Not that I've played those either, mind you.
Also, I loved the Arcomage minigame in 7 and 8 I think it was? Fun stuff.
I'll definitely be interested in this announcement, be interesting to see what's revealed.
Also MMVI was more like "Smashing self against walls where I can see red dots on the other side with Wizard's Eye, then spamming Ring of Fire till everything dies" the game.
It's really a shame that Heroes 4 didn't follow the Heroes 3 stories because NWC decided that blowing up the world = REBOOT!
FTFY
The Heroes 3 story was complete. If they had stayed on the same world, they would have just moved on to another continent and it would have been a new storyline with a few references to the old story.
Regardless, Heroes 4 definitely had some very well written campaigns, especially the last two, best in the series with complex and fully developed characters.
As for Heroes 4's problems, that was mainly due to 3DO's poor management and bankruptcy.
If they can recapture the magic of MM2, 3 or World of Xeen (Dragon Pharaoh rocks) then I'm all for it. However, if they're going for some realistic Lord of the Rings style crap, then I can so live without it.
eobet on
Heard the proposition that RIAA and MPAA should join forces and form "Music And Film Industry Association"?

Yeah along with the visual shift in VI-VIII, it lost a lot of its tongue-in-cheek charm that it had in the previous games, I guess I don't know how else to put it. EDIT: That's not to say I didn't play VI and VII to death.
I mean in Xeen you'd run into dual chaingun wielding mechs , "dark knights' that were badass robots and ladies like this:
Then in VI-? it went all pretty generic.
So I, too, hope they go back to the atmosphere of 2-5; though I honestly don't expect it. And, I'm sure I'll get it either way, even if it ends up being a turd.
Totally generic... until you got to the alien spaceship.
Speaking of weird older RPGs, the American made Wizardry PC games? Not to be confused with the Japanese made console Wizardry series of course. Wizardry 8 was pretty interesting although god damn battles could take a long time because of the huge numbers of enemies they'd start spawning while trying to travel. I think there was a mod for that or something though.
Might and Magic was always generic, though. The earlier games basically consisted of long strings of <random species> having had their <random artifact> stolen by <random monstrous species>. And then at the end, robots.

But even then, it was a lot less stylized and 'wacky' as previous games. Even simple monsters in the Xeen games had over the top animations when they got hit and such; it just felt a lot more fun in its designs.
The setting, in the end, was mostly the same. Kind of a Star-ocean-ish generic fantasy realms with an underbelly of aliens and sci-fi. It just felt like the earlier games got over the top in a good way a lot earlier.

I would argue that they pioneered the combination of fantasy and faery tales, at least on the PC. I also got the feeling that they tried to pack as much stuff in an as small area as possible to try to create an as "rich" world as possible... sort of like the Chinese way of "more is more", regardless of quality (or afterthought or depth)... but in a charming way.
Heard the proposition that RIAA and MPAA should join forces and form "Music And Film Industry Association"?
