Help Name My Bowling Ball!

MegaMan001MegaMan001 CRNARochester, MNRegistered User regular
I'm joining a bowling league in a thinly veiled excuse to drink heavily during the week. I'm picking up my new 'reactive resin' bowling ball this Saturday to be 'drilled'. As a part of this process I get to have something etched on the ball itself that can be eight characters in length.

So, Penny Arcade, what should I name it?

Also, I put quotations around any word or phrase I really don't understand if anyone wants to hit me up with some general bowling advice.

I am in the business of saving lives.

I'm pretty sure that we need to see a picture of the bowling ball before we can suggest a name that fits...

Name it Homer and make sure to have it engraved into the ball.

I don't think it's legally possible to name your ball anything other than Homer?

Getting your bowling ball 'drilled' means that you are having the finger and thumb holes spaced properly for your hand; it makes a big difference on how you play.

And go with a name you would be comfortable looking at for a long, long time.

EDIT: If you're willing to go with something silly, try 'SNZZBRRY' and lick it before you step up to the boards.

If I wasn't going to name it Homer, I'd name it Bill Murray, Bill for short, and evoke the power of Kingpin.

The fantasy nerd in me wants to say Palantír, too.

Many years ago I was walking back from the Ave in Seattle's university district. Past the southern dorms before you get to the bridge over Lake Union is a little underpass that is (was?) covered in dope ass artistic graffiti.

Lying there in gutter, just lying there, was a brilliant blue bowling ball. My buds and I grabbed it, of course.

The name on it was "Foon".

That thing was like our dark pet. It stayed in our houses over many moves, occasionally rolling into people's rooms or squatting maliciously in the kitchen. No one ever claimed responsibility for it or it's journeys. When we all broke up our last and greatest living experience it was ceremoniously rolled into our murky reflecting pool.

Yet, I still to this day occasionally break out in cold sweat, half expecting to see Foon roll out from some corner or closet.
    This is entirely true.

In the movie Mystery Men, one of the main characters is The Bowler and her magical bowling ball contains the skull of her father, Carmine the Bowler.

Incidentally, Janeane Garofalo's father IRL is named Carmine.

That movie is really entertaining, if you haven't seen it. It could have been terrible, but all the actors did a really good job of playing it straight.

That bowling ball did a ton of damage and was almost a character in its own right.

I am reminded of that episode of Pete & Pete ('When Petes Collide'), but "Foon" is considerably more mysterious, and actually fits the eight characters or less requisite, compared with "Rolling Thunder" (who was set free in the wild, iirc)

I had a bowling ball in high school which was inscribed "EDNA" after... uh... I think my dad's first wife's mother..? I dunno. I found it abandoned in the basement at the house and she endured three long, painful years of high school bowling club because, huzzah, it was a relatively rare left-handed number and being that it was an old-lady ball it was pretty weight appropriate for a dorky teenage girl. (Now I am curious what might have happened to ol' Edna.)

    hmmmmm.
Carmine is pretty darn fantastic, though.

I'd go for Carmine too, depending on the color/style of the ball...

Basically, 'reactive resin' is a urethane ball with resin added. The base performance of the ball really depends on the brand and what kind of stock it is though. Most brands have a diagram that shows their hooking performance on a lane too. But by the ball, hook potential goes:

Plastic -> Urethane -> Reactive Resin

Reactive Resins tend to hook later because they glide on the oil and then stick well beyond the break point so they hook then instead of sooner. So basically if you prefer to hook, then it's the ball for you.

“I used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw...”
  • MegaMan001MegaMan001 CRNA Rochester, MNRegistered User regular
I was recommended a Reactive Resin by the pro-shop lady at 14 lbs. According to her, starting higher than that would cause a lot of wrist strain and I should work up to the fabled 16lb ball. I just took her advice.

Oh, the ball is Red with Black Swirls. I probably should have mentioned that.
