Dire straits: Get a DS by getting rid of my PSP?

Ninja Snarl PNinja Snarl P My helmet is my burden.Ninja Snarl: Gone, but not forgotten.Registered User regular
edited March 2007 in Games and Technology
Long Version:
I picked up a PSP a few months after it came out in the USA, played it for about 6 months, and then the games more or less dried up for me. Yes, there have been a few games since the release I really enjoyed (GTA Rehash:Liberty City stories, for example), but combined with decent games being infinitely few and far between and the nightmare of firmware updates crippling the system, I think it's time for me to move on. I now look at the stylishly protective coating of dust and the PSP and find myself increasingly thinking "Hey, I could trade that in and get a brand new DS." Thus, I submit my problem to the inhabitants of these boards to answer with the, uhm, "elegance" of a variety you can only find here: Should I dump my PSP (with really only one game that appeals to me, FFT, coming out) or cave in, eat the loss of paying full price for the PSP, and join the endless ranks of DS players?

Short Version:
My PSP just sits there with nothing to play that I haven't already played to death. I hate the firmware lockdowns. The DS look like a lot of fun to me. Should I trade my PSP in to get a DS?

PS: I only have experience with the PSP, so responses from those who have owned and/or regularly used both systems will be especially appreciated. Thanks guys (and girls, I'm sure, but c'mon, this is the Internet. What're the odds?). References to fornicating with animals and mothers and combinations thereof will be considerably less appreciated.

I owned both, and I can say that I regret both purchases. I'm not just a huge portable gamer, so I don't think my opinion should be held very highly.
That said, I preffer the psp library to the ds. Just personal taste. Just compare games, and see if there's enough DS games that you are interested in playing.

I own both. I also own several wacky-crazy handhelds that a lot of people have never heard of.

If you're not enjoying your PSP, trade it in and get a DS. There are a LOT of things to like on it, especially if you're not the type to demand hyper-realism in your game's graphical design.

I own both, and I gotta say, except for the porns, my PSP rarely gets used. Same with my DS, but it gets taken to school and on car trips. So, I play my DS more.

PS: If you get a DS, get Phoenix Wright one and two. They must be new, though.

Owning both, it wasn't until recently that I used my PSP for something other then a media player.
I'll second Kyougu's suggestion as well as offer you this: Blockbuster will rent PSP games but not DS games.
Try a few PSP games and see if you like any more of them before you ditch the system.

Ditch the PSP. If you end up not liking the DS, then ditch it and get a PSP again.

Or save up and own both.

i own both and i must admit i love them both.

i suggest not trading your PSP and just buy a DS. there are lots of great games on the DS but a few good ones are going to come out on the PSP still.

plus the DS isnt overly expensive and shouldnt hurt your wallet.

Anyways, just save up for a phat. They've been cheaper since the Lite came out, and it's really hard to find DS lites right now anyways.

generally satisfied owner of both systems. I dig me some Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. The controls are a bit of a pain to get into, but they work. Also, dual wielding sawed-off shottys.

I will say though...I got Metal Gear Solid: PO shortly after it came out. Never left the first area. No, I don't know why either.

On the flip side, I got the sexy PA forum DS game: Hotel Dusk Room 215. Not that I dislike the game, but it doesn't call out to me, you know? When I look at my Lite, I don't think "NEED TO PLAY HD"
though it currently calls out "NEED TO PLAY TMNT." Hell, just get a GBA Micro on the cheap.

I can't say I've been too satisfied with my PSP. I've done pretty much everything you can do with it and it's just always been a tedious undertaking. The most fun I've had was by far Megaman Maverick Hunter X, which is nothing more than an SNES remake so it's not much credit to anything the PSP brings to the table.

My DS on the other-hand... I often set it aside and refuse to play because I simply can't decide what to play! There's so much "awesome" there. Elite Beat Agents ruined my chances of ever finishing my DS backlog by being too great (replay value is awesome)!

My 2nd broken PSP only needs a $12 analog stick and I've just left it there, unfixed, for months. I haven't had enough incentive to place the order.

I've been an owner of the PSP, DS, and DS lite since the launch of all three.

I find that the only DS games of my brother's I really like is Trauma Center and New Super Mario, the former of which I'll be getting with a Wii eventually anyways, while I've been playing tons and tons of Syphon Filter, MGS:PO, Genesis Collection, Daxter, Katamari, Maverkick Hunter and Lumines. The PSP has a God of War game, both SotN and Dracula X combo, FFT, and maybe Disgaea on the way...yes a lot of ports/port-ish games, like Trauma Center, but personally I love my PSP way more. I'll probably be picking up a DS just for the upcoming Zelda game, though.

No it's not. I can go into any retailer in my city and pick one up right now if I want to. I already have one though, so I don't need to, but the DS lite is not nearly so hard to get as a Wii or anything like that.

Yeah, it only was in January when Nintendo actually didn't ship any to the US. Just look at the NPD numbers. DS is the best selling system in the US currently, but it's not selling out or anything. I saw plenty at like 5 stores today, including dozens at Target.

I did this just a month ago. I could not be happier with my new DS.

I bought Animal Crossing (kinda meh... but keeps the missus occupied for HOURS), Warioware and Phoenix Wright.

Phoenix Wright will assert all that is good and holy in the world.

    Novelized version of the screenplay:

Thanks for the advice, guys. I think games the likes of which Darlan pointed out are the tipping point for me, though. Daxter was great, but short; it also came out almost a year ago at this point. I've played tons of Lumines (also old, but that doesn't really matter for Lumines) and loved Maverick Hunter (also came out over a year ago). I have to say the recent "selection" of games for the PSP have not interested me at all. Rented and beat MGS:PO in about three days, impressed by the graphics, it was nice playing with different characters, but ultimately I ended up just sick and tired of the stupid story (and not funny stupid, just bad stupid). I haven't enjoyed a Syphon Filter game since the Playstation due to control issues, so you can imagine how much I can tolerate it on a PSP. I loved the idea of the PSP when I got it, but Sony has had a year and a half to simply not screw it up and they have failed me miserably (yes, I know they aren't responsible for the shortcomings of the PSP, but they are directly responsible for the testicle-squeezing firmware as well as encouraging very little support for it from developers). Unfortunately I'll only get something like 60-70 bucks on a PSP trade-in at this point, but at this point the only regret I have is that I didn't trade the PSP sooner to get a better price and enjoy a DS longer. I wish this didn't sound so much a like a tirade against the PSP (especially since I supported it so much after I got it), but the truth's the truth. At least if I end up not liking the DS, I know I can pass it on to a sibling and they'll enjoy it. Again, thanks for the advice, people.

    Short story:

Everything the PSP has that I would like is too old, too short, or not coming out soon enough. The DS is cheap, the games are cheap, and there are a ton of games to play. So long PSP, hello DS, and thanks to everyone for the advice.

PS: The only game that actually tempted me to keep my PSP was FFT. Simply put, I'm not waiting till God-knows-when for an altered version of a game I've had for years with multiplayer I'll never use (ad-hoc), no matter how portable they make the game.

Custom firmware on a PSP negates that part of the issue entirely. Yeah, I know, late to the party. But still, my PSP has every official feature worth mentioning, yet Sony has no grip whatsoever on my balls. Which is nice.

    Enjoy your new DS. :)

Really? Because I just can't seem to find any around here. I was supposed to get a Lite for Christmas to replace my old, beat up phat, but after the 3-4 months of searching through stores periodically, I just settled for something else.
(3-4 months as in, from December up until now, I mean)

That's a real trick; because for 90% of the good games for DS, you can 100% complete them before you get tired of them. Expect to run through most titles faster than you ever dreamed you would for a PSP game.

Also a DS is MUCH harder to mod.

Depends, actually. If you've already got GBA mod stuff around, it's easy, if not, then it can cost a good deal of money (although unless you go crazy with it, it will cost less than the difference in price between a DS and a PSP).

The PSP really is easier to put custom firmware on. No external attatchments or anything needed. My PSP can do tons of awesome stuff now. And Sony actually incorporates some Homebrew features into the official firmware, like the RSS feed.

on a semi-related tangent, a local gaming shop is offering me $100 for my green halo limited edition xbox 1. Should I take that or keep my xbox 1. About half of my original xbox games are not BC and it looks like i will have the shelf space on my entertainment center to keep the xbox out and hooked up.

Now, should I sell it and put that $100 towards a new 360 or keep it?

Also, the 1 year warranty for the DS you'll probably use. I got the infamous crack (left side, cosmetic) as well as a developing, more sinister crack (right side, going to break the thing in half) and the nintendo people agreed to replace the DS on the first count (at least I think they will, instead of fixing it, since my network code will be changed).

Also, I got a white DS, but it's turning pink for some reason. Well, 2 for one deal I guess.

I like both, and while I wouldn't trade in my PSP I will have to say I use my DS a lot more. There's just a lot more games on there that I enjoy.

Veevee if you do sell it, I'd sell it on eBay. I'd sell it in favor of the 360, but I also rarely played my xbox and I think the 360 is way cooler in terms of current and future game selection, so I am biased.

I've kept my Xbox. Less than a third of my 100-or-so games are BC on the 360 so it was an easy choice.

Honestly, the used values on Xboxes have surprised me with how high they are. But for a Halo edition, you can do better than $100, especially on eBay. It's far from the rarest edition, but there's still only 200K of them out there. They're not everyday common.

If I were you, I'd keep it. But it's your call. Just don't expect a lot more to come from the 360's BC.
