Strings that make you go Ooo [GUITARS AND BASSES]
jungleroomxIt's never too many graves, it's always not enough shovelsRegistered Userregular
Even in this modern day digital world, for some people there is nothing better than the pure analog warmth of a modern stringed instrument. The feeling of the wooden body humming the note you just picked or plucked is the kind of vibrancy that shock controllers tried to duplicate, but never could.
What kind of gear do you have? I actually just ordered a new bass from the local music store, which inspired me to make this thread. Spector Legend 5 w Black Cherry finish.
I have one of these
and one of these
and one of these
I also have another bass that I built, but I don't have any pictures on the web anywhere. I'll have to drag some up.

Fan of the hollow body I see?
I have an Ovation ABG currently. Its neat but I can't wait for my new one.
I just fell in love with that bass when I was living in Finland. The one I built is as solid body in a similar style to yours, except that it's natural finished.

Anyone got recommendations for acoustic strings? I've had the same set that came with it for 3 or so years now. I use Elixers on my main guitar, and they are the stuff of dreams
Oh brilliant

I'll have to post pics of the wall.
I own a lot of junk instruments, especially ones I've been meaning to sell but never get around to it, but my prides are:
A transparent matte yellow, 2011 MIJ Fender Telecaster.
A mint green 1976 MIJ '58 reissue P-bass.
I haven't had a good chance to really play in quite some time, so now I feel bad

I like D'Addario for my acoustic, Ernie Ball for the electric and RotoSound for my bass.
The acoustic is a fairly cheap Stagg, the electric is a 1978 Aria Pro II (only one year younger than me) and the bass is a Jackson that I got when I was 18.
I've also got a ukelele which is a bitch to play because you have to re-tune it every five minutes.

I love DR strings, they run pretty fairly cheap but they last for a good while and sound the best of anything I've tried to my ears.
I have a few guitars. Here are the main two worth mentioning, a custom (sort of) guitar from these guys. Large images behind spoilers, be warned:
As well as this, a vintage Ovation Deacon from 1977ish. Currently not functioning electronically, but I've got plans for it. Thinking about making a new neck as well.
I usually play them through either a Peavey Classic 30 or a Vox AC4. I've got a couple of acoustics, but I'm really looking for a parlor-sized guitar now that I'm into fingerpicking.
Maybe this is a good place to ask about this. I have an acoustic guitar with a passive pick-up (i.e., no battery or knobs or anything in the guitar). I've been using a Fishman GII external pre-amp for gigging for a few years but it seems to have died. Anyone have any recommendations on what to replace it with?
Been trying to get back on the callused hand wagon after a few years of awful practice habits. Here's my favorite guitar, I've also got a few other absolute beaters lying around (and one of those Rock Band MIDI Pro stratocasters, which is fun but also really awful):
Mid-90s MIJ Jazzmaster. Aside from the cosmetic work, I've replaced the pickups and bridge.
Some damn fine basses in this thread. This is my stuff at the moment.
The Dingwall with the fanned frets is sick looking. I also love the viobass. I've always wanted to try one of those, but I've never seen one in a store.

Just ordered some LaBella tapewound black nylon strings and some Gibson speed knobs to replace my stock dome knobs. Will post pics and maybe a video once I get it done and set up.

That's a nice setup, man. Comparatively I have a little 10 watt bass amp from Peavy that distorts on my B string even at lower volume.
I'm hoping that once I graduate and land a decent job we can finally move outside of town into a decent house and I can get the kind of amp that you can use with a live drummer.

I've been looking at a couple of combos myself as I'm finishing school and looking to move out of the townhouse after I get hired. Orange has caught my eye because between the black nylon flatwounds I'm putting on my bass and my complete resurgence in classic rock and funk bass playing it just seems completely appropriate.

Heres the bass!
If you're curious as to why it isn't the black cherry, it's because the store ordered the wrong color. I loved the look of it and how it played so much I just didn't care and wanted it that day.
I've got a sea foam green USA strat from the 80's. I love that thing. Sadly my playing has evolved to a more rock n roller taste, and I just can't coax those kind of tones out of the strat, so I'm in the market for something else.
I really want a 70's Epiphone Crestwood, but damn they are pricey. So I think instead I'm just going to build a nice SG Junior copy and paint it fiesta red, then try aging/relic'ing it.
Lately I've been building vacuum tube guitar amps too, so all in all, getting a rather scary collection going.
Fun, isn't it? Love tinkering on amps. I don't do as much as I'd like.
Well it was, but I'm building a tweed deluxe for a co-worker at the moment and its got a gremlin that I'm having a hell of a time finding and fixing. It is seriously pissing me off.

I've got a 30W Marshal Bass combo that's got a really impressive range of sounds. They've got the overdrive channel just right so if you use it with the "Voice" control (a kind of a parametric mid-range EQ) you can get everything from a clanky metal sound to a warm, valvey 70s sound.
It doesn't have the same rumble that my 150W Laney head and 4x10 cab used to give me, but I can play it without the plaster on the walls cracking.
Yeah, I think that Vox might actually keep up with a drummer, if I had one handy.
That's going to depend a lot on the drummer. Top quality drum kits are a lot louder than you expect and a drummer that can play quietly is a rarity. I used to have to wear ear plugs with one guy I played with because his snare was so loud.
Where you're playing matters a lot as well, obviously. In a pub or small club, we used to get by with 80-100W guitar amps and 100-150W for bass.
An MIM standard jbass
A squier classic vibe jbass ((chinese made) like the one posted above)
An MIM standard strat
A 1970's Ibanez japanese knockoff of a Gibson ES-175 (from my madre)
and a chinese made Ibanez artwood acoustic with a built-in pickup.
I also used to have a korean made epiphone tbird bass until I gave it to my younger brother.
For amps I have:
a vox actv tube combo like mcdermott's, and it is real nice for the price/size.
A crummy but usable fender rumble 15 bass combo that i've used for practice since i started playing bass
An Orange Crush bass combo amp (50w solid state through a 1x12) which has been my most recent gear splurge, which is a perfect middle ground between the practice amp and...
a half-stack comprised of a GK backline head (300w solid state) that plays through an avatar 2x12 bass cab, which used to be my heavy hitter when I used to play with groups/shows.
I also used to have an SWR LA15 bass combo (100w solid state running through a 1x15 speaker) which I gave to my bro with the epiphone.
For pedals/effects I have:
A vox wah-wah, boss bass overdrive, boss phaser, boss bass chorus, boss delay, and a two-pedal boss loop station
I also have an alesis sr-16 drum machine for programming beats.
Finally I have a usb plug-in recording interface that came with a condensor mic and some recording software (at this point though garage band works just fine)
@Uncle_Balsamic what kind of cab are you running the markbass through?
I bet that thing sounds killer. Wish I could get a look at the circuit since I can't figure out why they're using 2-12AX7 for a single EL84 power section. Is the crunch/breakup over-powering?
Yeah, I was reading up on them since they seem like great little bedroom growlers to have around, it's supposed to have the same "top boost" circuit the old AC's had that made them so sought after, though the AC30's were always known more for chimy, bell like tones rather than crunch.
If you find it too much, you can always sub something like a 12AY7 in for a 12AX7, it will significantly lower pre-amp breakup, and give you more of a chance to pull clean tones out of the amp.

This is not a guitar or a bass. But it has real strings, and I *WANT*
That is kind of cool. But for the price (at least what's on the Indiegogo page) you could get something similar that has a few more "frets".
I will finally be adding a pedal to my setup. ISP Decimator II. Should be here later today. Now I shouldn't have to switch to a clean channel to clear out the "huuummmmmm" when a song is over.
mcdermott, was the Tiny Terror loud enough for a band setting? I've been looking into and contemplating getting a lunchbox amp for quite some time now. I would much rather take something that weighs 12 pounds to a show than 50 if I can help it.

What else is out there that can read frets, pick action, finger placement, etc without needing a pickup or tuning or anything?
The portability of this guy and the ease of use are really big sellers for me, but I will look at other options if they exist. I though the Jamstik was kind of unique though.

God I would love one of those, but it made the video dude look so goofy that he might as well have been holding a keytar. In other news I had no friggin clue the ipad had grown into such a complete audio production tool.

Indeed.
D'addario's lose their timbre in a matter of songs, I've never been a fan of Ernie Balls either.
Get me some DR flat heavy gauge strings on my bass, oh what a sound!
