Car Repair/Insurance/Exploding Rim Question

milehighmilehigh Registered User regular
So my car went in for repairs last week after a minor fender bender (got rear ended). All seemed well, the insurance company agreed to also repair a small (very, very small) notch on the wheel on the side that was hit. Sweet! That notch was existing, so I thought I was getting a great deal.

Well, I'm supposed to pick up the car tonight, and they just called saying the third party shop they have do their wheel repair just let them know that the wheel was destroyed in the process. She said they used the terms "exploded" and "disintegrated."

This wouldn't be a huge deal if they could just buy a new wheel and throw it on. Problem is, this particular model has been discontinued and is no longer for sale. The assumption at the moment is that they will write me a check for the cost of one wheel and put me on a donut for the time being, which does me next to no good. Do I have any ground to stand on here or am I looking at having to pay my premium and buy 4 new wheels on top of that?

Go through your insurance company, they'll probably have to pay for two.

4 is more of a "wear them all down at the same time and look not so weird with 2 sets of tires" 2 is a "bare minimum without fucking up a new tire and making it wear prematurely." This was most likely caused by the accident, so yes, they should be paying. Get your insurance company after the other one.

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

Their company is on the hook for the wheel. You probably could negotiate for 2 wheels but likely you will just get value for it.

They need to get you back to where you were pre accident

Well, good news. The insurance company is reimbursing me for all four wheels for what I paid at the time. On the downside I got the wheels when they were closing them out (go figure), so while I paid $700 at the time, I can't get anything comparable for $700 at the moment.

When I bought these there was one other set for around 1k that I was debating between. They're still available, so I'm looking at $325 out of pocket for the upgrade. Thread probably wasn't necessary but I anticipated more of a fight. Recommendation for Progressive++
