Doesn't this apply equally well to Football? How often do they change those rules?
Or thinking about it the other way, does each year's golf game feature new and exciting(?) golfers with all their latest stats or something? I don't understand sports games very well.

I don't think golfer stats change that much I mean each year football gets over a hundred new players let alone trades, retirements, coaching switches, etc.
Not that any of that requires a new game each year it could all be updated through dlc but that'll never happen.

i'm fairly sure all golf is terminal
the only people I see playing golf are old people
and people dressed as old people
presumably, they have yet to complete the metamorphosis
Outlaw Golf is still the best golf game. It is known.
Also Hot Shots.
I hit a 245 yard chip-in in Hot Shots the other day(granted I was playing as Kratos)... almost had a heart attack. It reminded me of that old "get active" PSA where the guy was playing a sports game, celebrated his victory, and quickly became winded.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
I actually think an MMO that ran for 12 months and then rebooted (maybe with some new content or something) might be kind of entertaining. I assume almost everybody else would hate that, though
also where is gabe supposed to be in this comic? some kinda like, paper mario golf course or something?
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet

I dunno about that analogy... Golf is like an MMO? Golf?
In the Tiger Woods games, there is very much an RPG-like progression for your character. You level them up, buy them clothes / accessories, and use that upgraded character to golf against other players and their upgraded characters. MMO might be pushing it a bit, but there's definitely a sense of loss when you pick up a new game and lose that golfer you spent so much time with.

Well with Madden I usually only buy it every few years instead of every year, but they do add a lot of advancements. Better gameplay mechanics, better graphics, new features, etc.
I liked Tiger Woods 13. I felt like they finally got it right. For that reason alone, I hesitated to get 14. After the debacle with SimCity, I am renewing my boycott of EA games.
And what's the deal with calling the current version '14 when it's meant to be played during the '13 season? That makes no sense.

It's usually worthwhile to skip every other year of a sports franchise. For hockey, it's once every three years. That's about how often they do major revamps and overhauls. Sometimes it works, sometimes it crashes and burns, but Madden '13 and Madden '09 are very different experiences.

The PGA season starts in January and ends in October. The season will end before '14. And they will start pushing '15 before the actual '14 begins. That just doesn't make sense.
I'm not sure I got Jerry's point about not getting EA games because they don't usually work at launch. I've never had, or heard of this problem, except with the new Sim City.

I'm on board for your MMO but since I really liked the central dungeon in Phantom Hourglass, I think we might be a small group of potential customers.

I know Madden typically comes with AI or gameplay issues that makes cheesing easy or at least the last few times it has which has been patched later on. I don't know about any other games.

I think for a lot of people they prefer to make their own guy rather than play as someone else.
So if that was one's main interest and they just wanted pure golf from the game, there's probably not much to noticeably add.
So if I wanted to jump into the Tiger games, which of the last few is generally considered the best? Or should I just go with the newest one?

I actually really like this part of city building/nation building browser games. It's also part of why I also like games like Monday Night Combat. Getting a fresh start with everyone is nice.

I used to think a semi-persistent world MMO based on the Wheel of Time would be rad. Because you could die, be reborn, live and wander in the world of dreams, and then every once in a while, everything gets blowed up and it's a new age.
But it would probably be really bad instead.

Pretty often.
Yeah it happens a lot actually. It's usually about contact. Though in the context of playing a video game it's hard to reflect.
Kinda suprised by that, figured they would have pinned it down by now.
Well the thing is, there's no objective right answer. What the rules should be is a matter of opinion, so as new people come into power positions, their views become the law.

NFL football the rules committee meets every Spring and propose/vote on/pass rule changes. Rules don't always change, but they have changed frequently. Also the aforementioned changes to teams and things.

Especially the recreate you character, or on my system rooster, for each and every game. Why can't they have a character import system for previous games?

Coming here to say almost exactly that. Colours in this one are great!
This was way funnier than it had any right to be.

is there anything more MMO-like than golf?
doing the same thing over and over and chatting while doing it for infinity is literally the point
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other

Oh, then I'd get to RP as one of my favorite film villains.

There are at least three F2P golf MMOs. Two I ran into elsewhere, one I found from a banner ad on PA back when it had them.
But it would probably be really bad instead.

Well the thing is, there's no objective right answer. What the rules should be is a matter of opinion, so as new people come into power positions, their views become the law.
A lot of rule changes have to do with player safety and new data about the long-term effects of concussions.
And also on how instant replay has changed things.
Then you have different rules at pro level, college level, and (apparently) high school level.
Think of it like a video game. Every entry into a series (every season) there may be new tweaks here and there.
