Who's up for some Errol Flynn style stunting, Zorro-esc swordfighting, Indiana Jonesing for rare artifacts, and of course lots and lots good old-fashioned Piracy?
All spots are currently taken but go ahead and post if you're interested. If anybody drops out you'll be on the list.
Invisible Castle or Orokos for dice rolls and Orokos or Myth-Weavers for character sheets seems to work well so we'll go with those. This is my first time so I apologize if I forget anything. No restrictions for character creation. Level 1 with standard starting wealth and feel free to include an items wishlist. Point buy or standard array.
Like, my big concern is how are we gonna have a defender if we're often on ships at sea. Because push the defender overboard, and *glugluglug* defender? More like drown-fender amirite?
Maybe we could just ignore having a defender and overwhelm our foes with swift and blinding violence! It could be deadly, but it could also be fun
I'd like to play a Bard (my fave) or Monk (try something new), but I'm cool with whatevs. I thought the two-weapon Fighter build (can't remember what it's called off-hand) might also make sense for high seas adventures, but I don't want to hurt the party's survivability by committing to be a defender and then not wearing heavy armor because heavy armor makes no sense on the water. Oh, a water genasi Warden might be able to overcome that problem. Hmm.

What do people think?
A) Dwarf- hard to force overboard Light armor defender- swordmage, warden, battlemind, battlerager fighter.
It will probably be tomorrow before I can make a character, Probably a controller. Don't really want to play a leader (played one through two tiers recently), and I already have a defender in another group that's actually a striker anyway.
Cool, thanks for the tips! I'll do up a Bard (either Cunning or Prescient) and one of the defender options discussed, see which one will better slot in with peoples' choices.
Work has been fucking awful today so I haven't finished this writeup. I'll get to the rest of it later.
Here's the char sheet though: http://orokos.com/dnd4e/sheets/5560
Name: Luther Lightfoot
Race: Human
Class: Rogue (Scoundrel)
Description: Luther is a handsome young man, and he knows it. It shows in his cocky smile and swagger, and is accentuated by his well-kept clothing and hygiene. He stands at 6'1", his height no secret as he struts around with shoulders back, and he is of an athletic build. While he may seem aloof and detached, his dark eyes are keen and carefully note his surroundings. There is practiced watchfulness in his gaze. If one does not appear to be a threat, they will typically be granted an easy smile and courteous greeting, polite but easily forgotten. He seems practiced in being forgettable, in fact, and while he may look neat there are no embellishments to his clothing.
Personality: Luther seems rather inviting at first glance, a fellow you might strike up a conversation with at the tavern, and he will always have a joke and a laugh handy. So quick he is with conversation, you probably would not notice how little he actually says. However, behind that bright rhetoric there is a calculation to his words; each sentence carefully crafted to steer the conversation away from himself, and usually towards the valuables that you have hidden away, perhaps in your room at the inn or tucked deep inside your purse. If one were to pursue Luther's true thoughts persistently though, they will likely be treated to a tale of sailing in a far away place, under a picturesque sky full of stars.
Background Flavor:
Branches whipped mercilessly at Luther's face and pulled at his clothes as he dashed through the darkened forest. With a splash, his boot plunged into a puddle, and he pitched forward with a muffled curse and landed on the mossy ground with a whump! that knocked the air out of him. As he struggled to regain his footing, he heard the shouts growing closer, heralding the accompanying torchlights of their bearers, "This way, men! I heard him, I did!" His heart racing, Luther finally made it back up and took off again, doing his best to pick paths around the thick undergrowth. Looking back through the trees, he struggled to spot the fires of his pursuers, and that is when the ground disappeared and he fell forward with a yell. Fortunately the fall was a short one, and he landed mouth-first onto a sandy beach. He raised his head with a cough, struggling not to make anymore noise. They weren't far off now.
He looked around, and was just able to perceive a wide river before him. Trying to cross it would be madness - who knew how deep it ran or how swift its current? Luther was always a strong swimmer, but he dare not risk it in the dead of night. He wished longingly for his barge, and of course for the riches that were still aboard when he fled. His mind was racing, and the crashes of the footmen were growing. His eyes fell upon some driftwood a few yards away and a hasty plan began to form. He removed his coat, and quickly wrapped it around the log and tied it in place. Bearing it upon his shoulders he sprinted as quickly as he could through the sand and launched the log with all his might. With a satisfying plunk!, the log bobbed below the surface a few yards out in the river, and he was elated to see the coat remained attached. He turned around and sprinted back to the treeline, hoping it would drift far enough from the shore to remain convincing. He dove into a thicket and pressed himself into the dirt, struggling to control his breathing as the dozen men crashed through the trees beside him. "I heard a splash!" their leader shouted. Check the river! The men spread out along the shore and shortly after the cry went up from the men downstream. There! Out there! I see him! There were cries of anger followed by the clunk! of crossbows and the group continued chasing after the log into the darkness.
Luther laid in the dirt for what seemed an eternity before chancing to stand, and after peering into the darkness for hints of light, he took off at a brisk walk upstream, just at the edge of the forest. Before long he came upon a road. He gazed up at the stars, using them as a map as he had for so many years, and turned north to continue his walk. A few hours later and the sun had begun to rise, and he stopped at a stream to examine his reflection and clean himself off a bit, winking at the devilishly good-looking, clever young man in the water before he set off again whistling a tune. He heard cocks crowing in the distance, and decided to go the rest of the way by road: it would be pretty suspicious if he walked out of the woods when he got to town.
The trees broke and the village lay before him, and he made a beeline for the inn. He checked the stable for any of the King's Patrol steeds before making his way inside and purchasing a room. He entered and sat on the cot within with a tired sigh, and checked his pockets. He frowned at the piteous pile of gold, thinking longingly of the crates of jewellery and fine goods that had probably been confiscated from his boat by now. Of course, then his mind turned to his employer and the reaction he would have when the news reached Cormyr, and Luther swallowed hard. It was a good thing he purchased this room under an assumed identity.
With that thought, he slid a dagger beneath his pillow, propped the door closed, and fell into a deep sleep.
So far I'm looking at a cunning Bard with the heavy blade arcane implement proficiency feat, so I can take a mix of melee and implement powers without having to split my share of the loot between improving a weapon and an implement. Also, swinging a scimitar and saying inspiring shit is WAY cooler than waving a wand and saying inspiring shit. Like, no contest.
But if someone else is itching to play a leader then I'll switch over to some kind of Warden. I forgot they were light armor defenders, and I've been curious about them. They sound fun.

Did someone say warforged?
Edit: changed the background to guttersnipe, wasn't really feeling the cursed shtick.
"There's rumour round the ports that ol' Saul was put together by some mad sorcerer or summoned from another world, but that's not true. Cannonball's been around longer than anyone can remember- hoppin' from ship to ship, always a smile to give and a favour to ask.
Time was he was welcome anywhere from the Bay of Scales to One-Horn island, but folks eventually got tired of him. The coin ran out and he had to make ends meet in less than savoury ways.
Seen him around, you say? Well damn, he owes me some coin..."
So I've come up with these as options to go with. I can't decide between them, and I'm holding off on fleshing out the characters themselves until I figure out which one I'm playing.
Berrian the Wanderer, who I figure to be a captain or first mate. Mainly because I don't know very many other ship's officer titles. Quartermaster, is that a thing? He could probably get good prices on supplies. orokos.com/dnd4e/sheets/5561

Well, we're starting at level 1, so the AIP: Heavy Blade isn't really needed, and there's songblades that are swords that Bards can use as implements, for when we start getting magic items.
What I'm saying is you won't really gain anything by spending your only feat slot on that at level 1.

Good point. I can ditch the shield and just hold the wand in the off-hand for a level or two. I figured I would retrain the AIP once I got a weapliment, but it's probably better to get an accuracy boost with this feat.

You don't need a wand. Using a mundane implement confers no benefits whatsoever, unless you have a feat or class feature that requires its use (like Arcanist Implement Mastery, or the Expertise feats).
You never have to be wielding an implement in order to use powers with the implement keyword.
Play your Berserker, by all means! I'm happy with either of the classes I made. For that matter, I'm happy to fill whatever role I need to be slotted into.
So I do need to stick with the wand, or rather to have both a wand and shield handy depending on the situation. Battle Song Expertise gives me a +1 to hit with Bard weapons and implements, and it increases all my slides from my attack powers. Handy stuff. I need to find something that penalizes saves on my targets, make it harder for people to resist being pushed overboard by the force of my awesomeness.
It's an interesting Expertise feat, because it remains relevant even after I've found a fancy songblade.
I am Cunning! It's one of the reasons that feat stuck out at me. I also took Blunder as my Encounter power, which lets me slide an opponent 1 + IntMod, and an ally I move the target past gets to make an MBA at him.
I considered going skald, and I think I still could at 2nd level, but I'm already not a stellar healer, and I'm not sure if the skald aura's healing ability is as good as the default power Bards get.
Skalds are neat, but Bard are definitely better healers, and Skalds tend to want to use heavy armor.
Fake skald is an option (take Skald Training on a bard, it replaces Majestic Word with Skald's Aura), but Skald's Aura really is the worst leader feature heal in the game.
That's kinda what I was afraid of. Seemed to me like if you want to be a skald, be a skald. Get the aura powers, invest in the feats, etc. And the heal just didn't seem as good.
I did take chainmail for now. I can either get Armor Finesse to offset the penalty, or keep an eye out for some Eladrin armor. There are enough ways to offset the penalties at some point that it doesn't seem like a huge problem considering how much of an AC boost it is over lighter armor.

Alright, just stumbled my way in here. What's everyone playing, so far? I'm willing to do pretty much whatever, role-wise at least.

Should we coordinate what we're playing, or just go nuts and make it work?
If we're swashbuckling I'd be down with playing a thief, but I'm pretty flexible so I don't mind filling in leftover roles.
Maybe we could just ignore having a defender and overwhelm our foes with swift and blinding violence! It could be deadly, but it could also be fun

Or a warforged or revenant, since they don't need to breathe, so don't have to worry about drowning.

Incidentally, I'll be taking Agile Opportunist as my level 1 feat now. So any time you slide me, I get to make an MBA against an adjacent enemy >:D
e: damn Agile Opportunist is a Paragon tier feat. Oh well. I'll find something equally good.
