I was a compliance officer for many years! This is what I did for a living! By strict definition, I'm assuming "thread" meant only this thread related to the game and players, so if I wanted to talk to you, I'd have to do so in this thread!
They could simply have said "use previously approved communication means" and been done with it as well.

It means, in fact, that players cannot generally communicate about game-related matters outside the thread. This rule can of course be changed, which is why A.ix is present.

And complaining about not being able to communicate outside the thread is silly, that rule is hilarious and great. Unless the entire mafia gets a full exemption, which would be dumb as hell.
Prediction: They probably just have something like they can vote on mafia kills with one-word posts (and no reasoning) on the mafia proboards, with all other communication being disallowed.
I have a feeling that we're going to propose a dozen or so rule changes on day 1 and the hosts will just have to figure out a way to reject them all as invalid or the game's over

Main reasoning: I have no reason to believe the hosts will have an optional rule at start that is basically "Fuck the village"
