Weird mole

rafaelrafael Registered User regular
I have this mole on my upper arm, it's black with a red edge, it changed color within a couple of days, should I be concerned?

Is it new? If so, go to a doctor today and get a biopsy. Skin cancer tends to show up initially as a new mole.

I would go and see a doctor or dermatologist to have it biopsied.

Obvious IANAL IANAD tag with that.

Are there free clinics that can check it out

  • iRevertiRevert Tactical Martha Stewart Registered User regular
I don't know about that, if you have one in your area all you can do really is go in and ask.

It has been flesh colored for years, might it be an irritated mole?

A spot that was flesh colored but is now black with a red edge should definitely be checked by a doctor.

Moles that change, especially within a short span of time, need to be evaluated by a doctor.

    Go see a doctor immediately.

The answer will still be go to the doctor, though. Melanomas (which I'm not saying this is, but it could be) are fairly easily dealt with if you catch them early, but they get pretty aggressive if left untreated. Not (yet) a doctor and all that.

I'm not going to lie I'm a little concerned why you want to see it.

A long time ago I recall learning in college something along the lines of the ABCs of melanoma.
A - Asymmetry. An irregular shape is not good.
B - Border. Kinda ties in with asymmetry. Look for if the border is jagged.
C - Color. More than one color can be a bad sign.

Edit: Huh, there's also a D and an E. Either I've forgotten them since school or they've added more.
D - Diameter. More than 6mm is dangerous.
E - Elevation. If it is raised from the skin, it may require investigation.

If you've seen a melanoma before they're kinda hard to forget.

However the IANAD tag should be applied to that.

You don't need to post pics if you don't want to but you do need to go see a doctor, preferably a dermatologist.

You have a medical problem for which you should be seeing a doctor. If it is so serious you probably shouldn't be asking a forum on the internet, but if you do ask a forum on the internet you should consider reading that forum's rules. In this case, those rules say pretty clearly that you don't call people names here and get to keep your thread open.
