It sounds like there is a lot of interest in a tour of Valve's headquarters in Bellevue before PAX. According to
they offer a tour on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 3:30 PM and they generally last about 45 minutes with some swag to be given out at the end. For now I guess gauging interest and getting a head-count is the first step so we know how many people to tell Valve to expect (or to see if we have too many and need to split into two or more groups and go on more than one day).
I have just completed compiling all of the names of the attendees and am currently awaiting replies to an email I just sent out asking for a few of the +1 names that were not sent in at ticket purchase. Once those names are all sent in to me I'll be sending the list over to Valve and we should be all set. Transportation is still up to be talked about but as far as I can see the 550 bus seems like the general consensus. We can also get to talking about which hotel/location some groups may want to meet at for a specific date and have a group walk over to the bus station if that's what some people wanted to do. Other than that with less than two weeks to go all we can do now is eagerly await (pre) PAX!!
"For people coming that are not local to Seattle, the bus is a primary form a transportation in the city and they are quite clean/inexpensive. As mentioned by Ramen, the 550 bus has several stops in downtown Seattle and on its southbound route continues across I-90 over to downtown Bellevue. The 550 also stops very close to Valve HQ, and also returns back across I-90 to downtown Seattle. The cost one way is usually $3, or as low as $2.50 depending on where you get on.
On Google maps it may route you on the 280 northbound, across the 520 bridge, and into downtown Bellevue, but this bus is much slower. The 550 is an 'express' bus and only has a handful of stops on its way to Bellevue. Total commute time from downtown Seattle via Bellevue is around 35 minutes depending on time of day.
Select the 'bus' icon in the top right, select 'Sound Transit' and then select '550 Bellevue-Seattle Express'.
Please comment below and say which of the three days is best for you, keeping in mind if you want to go to any MMT events etc. I'll update the OP with each person's 'vote' that way if we end up splitting into groups that'll be kind of done.
Update 04/25/2013: No word back from Valve at the moment, I'll see what I get back from them and then ask about a PAX special tour or if there are other possible times as well.
Transportation: its looking like the 550 to and from Bellevue is our best bet?
http://www.soundtransit.org/Schedules/ST-Express-Bus/550?tab=Map there's our route at the moment
Update 04/25/2013 (#2): WOW! I'm both very excited and very scared at all of the interest this has garnered in just a day of being up! Excited because, well, it'll be an amazing pre-PAX event and a great opportunity to get to know some forum-ers
Scared because with the amount of people I'm hoping Valve will accept us all be it as one group or split up among multiple days/multiple tours per day. I've enlisted the help of
@LexiconGrrl and
@bloatedhippo so far just so I don't get too bogged down but if anyone in the thread has any information of use shoot one of us a message
Update 04/25/2013 (#3): Valve got back to me in an email, though not much information is gained they assured me they are looking into our situation
"Hey (my name),
Thanks for reaching out and planning ahead for summer tours of Valve during PAX.
I need to talk with a few other people here regarding your request. If you don't hear from me by Tuesday, please feel free to email again.
Cheers!"
So hang tight and stay excited, after we get Valve confirmation we will ponder our transportation options! I'm off for the night and will update the OP with any new attendees in the morning o/
Update 04/29/2013: Still no word back from Valve but they have another 30 or so hours to send me anything before I think I should contact them again. So by Wednesday I will have sent out either a reply to them or a new email to get their attention again letting them know how much we've grown again and also that we still expect to grow in numbers by the time PAX comes around.
Update 05/01/2013: I just sent another email to Valve after their Tuesday 'deadline' passed. I let them know that we are now sitting at about 130 people interested. I'll keep you all posted as soon as a I get a reply from them.
MAJOR UPDATE 05/10/2013:
Alright guys, as you can see from the new title this has grown to not only a Pre-PAX Valve tour, but also a Post-PAX Valve tour as we (
@bloatedhippo & I) have locked in dates after PAX wraps up to try to allow more people to go on the tour. Valve contacted us and let us know that there is a 25 person limit per tour date (with only one tour at 3:30PM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) As of right now we have blocked out:
Tuesday 26th, Wednesday 27th, Tuesday 3rd, Wednesday 4th, and Thursday 5th. Unfortunately we were beat to the punch on the 29th (our most popular day) and can't send any of our forum-ers to tour on that date. That being said we have a total of 125 tour slots open over the 5 days that we have blocked out so we can start a new sign-up process shortly. Just to ensure people will not 'flake out' on the tour because of the limited space and high popularity we are currently working out a 'refundable deposit' system that would make sure that the people that signed up show up and don't just take up a slot that could have gone to someone else. Any money that is not collected by the attendee on their tour date because they don't show up will be donated to Child's Play afterwards. As for now get talking with your friends and try to make plans to see if you can tour on any of the new days (especially you 29th people), and we will open up sign-ups as soon as we get the deposit system figured out and relay that information to all of you.
Update 05/12/2013:
Hey guys, just wanted to update you all in the OP. Sorry sign-ups haven't gone up yet, I've been busy with finishing up high school and taking exams and stuff and haven't had the time to set up the Eventbrite 'events' for each day yet. Speaking of which it sounds like we will be using a "refundable deposit" system using Eventbrite to keep track of people. We'll have a base 'price' to attend the tour as a deposit and if you show up and Valve checks your name off the list then a refund will be sent to your account (paypal etc.) within the same week. This system will ensure people don't flake off their slot on the tour since they are pretty desirable. If you fail to show up to the tour then your deposit will be transferred over to Child's Play. Hopefully I'll have all of the events up by Thursday or Friday at the latest so we can get a list of people as soon as we can. After getting sign-ups done we can move on to transportation, though it's still up for conversation as to whether we need a formal transportation system, or if we will all just agree to make it to Valve HQ at the right time on the right day (or travel in groups of people near your hotel etc.) Other than that, stay excited and keep an eye on the thread for when I finally get around to setting up the events on Eventbrite
Take care!!
Update 05/17/2013:
Sorry things haven't gone up yet guys, but it's good to hear people are stalking the thread religiously :P I hate to do this but due the limited amount of spaces on the tour dates we will have to limit all ticket purchases to 2 per purchaser. This means you and a friend can sign up and pay the $50 deposit and secure your two slots on your desired tour date. To make this more fair and to allow you to re-coordinate with your group(s), I'll hold off on releasing the event sign-ups for at least another 31 hours from the time of this post (sign-ups open at around 6:30 AM PST, May 18th or a little later). Thanks guys, and sorry for the limitation!
(side edit: Tickets will be $23.42 + an Eventbrite fee of $1.58 per ticket = $25.00, refundable upon your attendance at the tour)
Update 05/18/2013:
Okay, ticket sales will begin in the coming hours but just to clarify to everyone. You will be refunded your $25 deposit once I get confirmation from Valve that you actually showed up at the tour on your desired date. If you don't I'll forward your money on to Child's Play. If, for some reason, you/your group members need to drop out, you can request a refund from me and I'll put your tickets back on sale for others to buy. If you have any more specific questions don't hesitate to send me a PM, or comment on the thread if you think visibility will help to clarify things

I'll reiterate that: Tickets are capped at 2 maximum per customer so please find a way to split this among your group members if you have more than that many. "Tickets" are refundable deposits that will be refunded back to your Paypal account as soon as I get confirmation from Valve that you attended the tour, else your money will be passed over to Child's Play (the refund can take a few days so don't go spam mode on me till after that :P). Enjoy ticket purchasing and if you run into problems or you need to ask a question feel free to send me a message or post in the thread
Can't wait to see you guys at PAX in just a few months
Update 07/18/2013 (#3):
Hey guys, I've noticed that tickets are selling already and I'm really excited now
However, before setting this up I didn't know that PayPal took a fee for putting the funds into my account. Once I refund the money back to your accounts after your attendance (assuming every ticket is sold and every person attends) I'll actually be about $120-140 short due to all the fees that PayPal takes out (I've already sold 9 tickets and I'm about $11 short) I only see three solutions:
A) Take money from no-shows and cover the PayPal fee amounts (Less money to Child's Play, but all attendees are refunded the whole amount) (This would only work out if a few people didn't show up)
Refund only the amount that I actually received in my Paypal (about 1.50 less for single tickets and about 2.50 less for double tickets) (This would ease the cost on me and all of the no-show funds can go to Child's Play but would cost you a couple dollars for your attendance)
C) I could add a donation option to the tickets and any generous souls could contribute to a refund pool

Not to be pessimistic but I would contact them now to make sure they even have tours open around PAX.
Tried to go last year and they had closed tours for a couple weeks around that time.
Pessimism =/= realism as one of my friends would say. Either way I sent them an email about 45 minutes ago and will post any updates that I get from them
EDIT: yea, a day would be good. Thursday would be the day.
Only option I know of is public transport (bus-ing it over there). Any one from the area or know of any easy way to get down to Bellevue?
Ah so it seems the address I thought it was ended up being wrong
10900 NE 4th street, #500
Bellevue, WA 98004
^that seems to be the correct address
They must have moved HQ's from,
520 Kirkland Way
Kirkland, WA 98033
at some point but google maps didn't update that but it DID update the location of the HQ
Fair warning to all who go to this thing: It'll be letting out after 4 pm, which is about the same time all the Microsofties in Redmond and the Nintendites from the same area get off work. Traffic on 405, particularly around the I-90 interchange, is an absolute NIGHTMARE as a result. If you're going back to Seattle from Kirkland, allot yourself at least 90 minutes up to 2 hours for your return journey. Or be smart and go hang out in downtown Bellevue at one of the bars in the area until 8 when the traffic dies down.
My Body Is always Reggie
The trip TO Kirkland would be quick, no more than 20 or 30 minutes. The trip back is the problem.
And yes, Park and Rides run all night long, but....they're the bus.
(We prefer Thursday, but we'll do Wednesday if Thursday is already full.)

So probably me +4?
Yeah, see how big of a group they can bring in, because there would probably be more than 5 of us interested.

As for transportation, the Sound Transit 550 bus is what you want. It's $2.50 there, and $2.50 back. You can catch it in any of the transit tunnels in downtown Seattle, and it takes you directly to Bellevue downtown.
I know Bungie is also right downtown in Bellevue (someone mentioned doing multiple tours). I have no idea if they do tours.

While traffic will be bad around that time (the Bing, Expedia, and several other offices are nearby) there will most likely be several bus stops nearby that one could figure out how to get from to downtown Seattle. Or, as mentioned, kill about an hour or two hanging out together afterwards and then hitting the interstate.
Also thanks sooooo much to @hobbseltoff and @sirmrej for the info about route 550. I was ready to spend lots of money for a car to travel back and forth between Seattle and Bellevue and thanks to you guys I only need to spend $5 to do that. Now I just need to figure out Bellevues public transportation. So thanks again.
