I didn't want to start a new thread, but it looks like the stream of Wii threads has dried up, and I couldn't find anything related in the last 5 pages or so. After months of waiting, searching, and despair, I finally got my hands on the Wii. Now, I have no trouble setting it up, but I don't know what the next step should be. In particular, I need to understand the Wifi features. I never got the DS (honestly, between the PS2, Gamecube, and GBA, I never had time for another system's worth of games,) so I never had to work with it before. I use a standard AT&T DSL router that I share with my router for the Internet.
Next, what else should I get? I assume some sort of rechargeable batteries and a rechargers will soon be necessities. Any recommendations on which ones to get and from where? How long do I have with the batteries that came with the Wiimotes?
Are there any other hardware essentials I should get after this?
You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.
Are Wiis...humanly find-able now, or did you get lucky? (Not an answer to your question, I know, but I hope to be in a similar situation as you soonly.)

They're all over Craigslist and for barely more than retail.
Your regular wireless internet system should work fine with your Wii; just go into the Wii's system settings and add it to the network. Once I set mine up, I haven't really had to think about it.
And other than rechargable batteries (any kind are fine) and possibly a classic controller if you plan to go nuts with the Virtual Console, you don't really need any accessories.

I don't have a regular wireless internet system. I have a bit wore that extends from my roomate's room, over my doorframe, and into the back of my computer.

You might pick up at least another controller. 2 is the bare minimum for a Wii. If I had the extra cash I'd buy 2 more just in case.
That said if you want a game that will teach you really quickly how to use the controller give WarioWare a rent. I personally don't think it's worth the buy unless it's just really your thing, but it's fun (don't expect any real multiplayer however) and worth the rent.
Sonic seems to be the game people are getting off on right now; but honestly I don't think it's that great. There are so many different ways the controls could have been handled and they picked a really shitty one if you ask me. I understand the concept of the remote, the concept of the motion controls for the Wii, but for a game that requires precise controls, not only are the controls totally unresponsive when you need them to be (the challenge of a game shouldn't be hoping that it registers your "thrust"), and just poorly thought out (someone explain to me why I can't charge jump, or hell, jump at all, without losing half my speed). Even the leaning the remote to turn just doesn't work like it should. Anyway, sorry, I'm just glad I rented it and not bought it; but to be totally honest that $8 rental (fuck hollywood video) would have been better spent buying Sonic off the VC. It's way more fun and considerably better designed.
I still have yet to give Zelda a shot. I rented sonic instead because I knew that I would just buy Zelda no matter what.

Thanks, but pah. If I was willing to pay more than retail, I'd have gotten one at Christmas.

Now what?
Now you get Zelda, Wario Ware, and Trauma Center.
Then on April 9th you celebrate my birthday with Super Paper Mario. Which you will send to me.

Ah. In that case you'll need the Wii LAN adaptor, which runs about $25.
I used the Wii as an excuse to set up a wireless network, and it's been wonderful.

Okay, for the record, I'm mostly interested in just hardware for now. I already have Zelda and an extra controller/nunchuk, so between that, Sports, and Final Fantasy 6 (which I didn't buy until last week,) I'll be okay for now. The Wii LAN adapter sounds about right. Where should I get it? Is is hard to set up?

All of those problems mostly go away once you've levelled up enough (for example, there's a set of abilities that reduce your deceleration while sliding, and another set that boost your speed when you land). If you're willing to put in the time, the game gets awesome right about the time when you've 'beaten' it. If you're a completionist and you don't mind playing through a level over and over until you've managed to get everything perfect, I'd say to go ahead and get it.
I can see why a lot of people don't like the levelling system, though. As it is, the game is set up so that you aren't allowed to be awesome in the beginning. You have to slog through the story slowly gaining power until you make it to the end, at which point you can go back and rip through everything (or have everything rip through you, in the case of the no pearls levels). You aren't supposed to play the mandatory levels as time attacks when you first come to them, you're supposed to savor the experience so that you appreciate the contrast when you come back to them later.

actually, if you look at the back of the Wario Ware box its slated as a 1 player game. my gf and i found that out the hard way....
"why isn't my controller working?"
That means it's a 1 controller game, not a 1 player game. I don't understand, are you joking? The game has a lot of multiplayer modes.
i haven't played more then 30 mins of it (we were trying to do some multi player stuff like wii sports) but the only option you have when you start the game is "single player". do you open up more modes later?
Nah. Very easy. You just plug adapter into USB port and voi'la, it works.
The computer's? Or should I not ask dumb questions and just wait until I get the adapter and read the manual?
Actually, I'm not sure what ports my computer has open. I got a new one last year, and I remember I couldn't find a place to attach my old Playsation Dex Drive.

You have to open up Multiplayer, after playing through single-player IIRC. Oh, and for batteries I'm using the energizer E2 rechargeables. Last a long time and charge in 15 mins (if you buy the 15-min charger), what more could you want? Will run like $30, but I think they're worth it, and you should be able to find them at any Wally World or Bullseye. I'm kinda interested to hear about Nyko's charger, with the base for the remotes. Anyone have first-hand experience with it (is it even available yet)?
There was a lineup of people 3 hours before the store opened?
On March freaking 25th? Good God damn.
Yeah. My mom actually was the one to get it, because she has an unusual work schedule. I generally have the 9 to 5 hours, so I can't do the "camp out before the store opens" option. And she was apparently there at...6:45, I think? And was fourth in line?

Nah. Very easy. You just plug adapter into USB port and voi'la, it works.

The Wii should have two USB ports on the back. The adapter goes there.
Ah. How does that connect to the wire-based router? Is it an actually wired adaptor that simulates wireless? Or does it connect in a way I'm not getting at all and am just going to assume utilizes faeries and moon magic?

Ah, so it does still make it a wired system. Hmm, I'm not too happy with that, since the Wii's going in a different room than the router, and I'd rather not have a cable running all the way down the hallway. Is there any sort of halfway system I can use? Like using some sort of wireless adaptors on the router and Wii? Or will I have to convert to wireless entirely?

The Wii is wireless out of the box, so you won't have to mess with that.
So yeah, some sort of wireless router/adaptor is what you need. May as well make the plunge if this is what you want... wireless networks are nice.

I'd just get a wireless router, honestly. You can get a good one for 30-40 bucks these days.
So I haven't gotten my Wii yet, but I'm working on it (gunning for this Friday, I'm limited though because I have to go through Best Buy because of gift card situations) But is Banana Blitz good? I don't really want Wario Ware, but I want something besides Zelda when I do get it.
