This isn't so much a question for me as a question that's been a major problem at work and for a few friends of mine.
HD on the PS3. These past three days at work have been difficult thanks to an onslaught of calls complaining about getting the PS3 working in high definition.
Basically, people are telling us that when they plug in their HDMI cables (official Sony ones nonetheless) they get no picture, only sound. Some can't even get past this, no matter how we guide them thrugh connecting and getting this stuff sorted. Others are telling us they're having to set their settings every single time they start the console.
This has also happened to a friend of mine, and I don't know what the cause is.
So... yeah. Any ideas what causes this? Is this a known issue? Help appreciated.
Seriously... HDMI is not fucking easy apperantly. I have an HD tuner with HDMI out and it doesn't play nice at all with my old Sony Wega... after a few moments it fades to black and white which is a symptom of bad HDCP handling.
So I have to use component...
The good thing is that Sony can fix it with software whereas I'm stuck with a pretty much useless HDMI port on my tuner.
Don't even get me started on DirecTV and their HR20... which I had to practically threaten to send back as a bomb if they wouldn't let me out of their contract.
EDIT: so in conclusion... you should probably call Sony up and encourage people to do the same... tell them the problem and tell them it's a UK display and the model number... they obviously have some work to do and you will probably see a firmware release that fixes the problem... whenever
It does sounds like an HDCP handshake issue. It could be on the PS3 end or the TV end, but given the slipshod implementation of HDMI on some earlier TVs (our customer service department upstairs has a file labelled "$#&@ing HDMI" I would lean towards the TVs.
If the TV is firmware updatable it could be that they need an upgrade.
I'm imagining it can't be the TV as out of over 100 PS3s sold we've had about 50 complaints (which is ironic as we only had 60 HDMI cables to sell), and I imagine it has to be an issue with either the cable or the way the PS3 is set up. I don't have a console and neither does anyone else in this store, so we've no idea what to advise them.
I've heard tell of this in the US as well, somebody posted a video demonstrating how it happened, but they attributed the problem to be on the side of the TV. Something about handshaking, but that's all I can remember.
I believe the display has to be HDCP compliant for it to show picture. In fact, I'm pretty positive on that front (since I tried to hook it up to my monitor, but it isn't HDCP compliant so no picture showed). Also, I don't know if this helps, but you might want to check the display settings. For instance, let's say I move my PS3 from an HD display using 720p/1080i to a SDTV at 480i. However, I don't change the display settings. They're still enabled for the HD cable and the HD resolutions. Guess what happens when I plug it into an SDTV? There's no display. I have and had re-plug it into my HDTV, disable the HD settings and make sure I selected the right cable and resolution for the SDTV, and then move it. THEN it showed a display. Although, like Ownage said, I guess you can reset the settings by holding down the power button? I don't know how that works.

Well I'd first ask them to call Sony support, or to make sure the cable is OK if they can by using it on another HDMI device if they have one.

And the whole "Hold power down for a few seconds so it knows to switch".
But put HDMI in the thread title, I though you were talking about the hard drive at first. :P
