I am in one heck of a quandry...

My mom doesn't want me to go to PAX. However, she respects my desire to attend, and thus is paying for air + hotel.

However.

She is willing to pay me $650 -- six hundred and fifty dollars -- if I don't go.

See, I live in Michigan, and I've never been on my own before, especially 2500 miles away. And apart from my grandmother (her mother), I'm the only thing she has in the world.

However, if I take the money, it could very well be the first step into becoming one of those stereotypical guys who live with their mothers, or something. That wouldn't be cool at all.

But $650 is an incredible amount of money.

However, could money replace the experience of going to PAX? I mean, who knows how fun it'll be?

So, what are your thoughts? What do you think I should do?

You're 20, right? Use the money to get ready to move out, or at least go to PAX so you can have a taste of what it's like to be on your own. I'll even go a step further and assume you have not had a steady job, since you refer to $650 (which is no small sum) as an "incredible amount of money." You need to get out more, one way or another.

Tell her that you wont go to PAX but that you need to go there because you promised your friend you would at least be there (at the hotel)...then just attend PAX and come home and say you were bored the whole time while your friend went to PAX.

    Wow penguin...

Umm.. I believe the mom doesn't want the son to GO to Washington...
I don't think PAX is the issue.. it's the fact it's so far away..

And yea - I would def. just use that money to start living your own life..
I'm only 17.. and that's not a lot of money to me.

By the way, I have no intention on moving out or acquiring official employment anytime soon. My father passed away last February, and I have to stay around the house to help mom out for the time being.

His mom would be paying airfare and hotel costs. She would be out about the same amount either way.

Sorry to hear about your father, but is your going out of town for a weekend THAT much of a big deal to your mother? If she is having real issues with the idea of her 20-year old son being out of town for a weekend, you guys have some complicated stuff that needs to be worked out.

As much fun as this is going to be, I'd recommend staying home. From the sound of things, you're now the man of the house, and she needs someone there to help her both physically and emotionally.

Personally, I wouldn't take the money either, but that's just me. In the end, it's your decision, and you've obviously put a lot of thought into this, which is good. Just my 2 cents.

if i'm not mistaken, this is the very first PAX ever, right? well, there is a chance it could be just a very boring waste of geek time.

...or... it could be the historical equivilant to a gamers "WOODSTOCK!".
you can tell you're kids, generations later, "yea, i was there, rolling in the mud with nerd girls.." **rock music swells** YEA BABY!

(...wha... no naked mud pits. well this is always-raining-seattle right? ... I'll make sure to start one at the DoubleTree. hehe)

go to PAX, it would be way more fun.

If i were you, i'd go. You get to see your mom every other day of the year. But you only get to go to PAX once a year.
