yea :( also when I got him his top fins we're alittle prettier looking it kinda looks like he's lost his color a tiny bit.

: < thats not a good sign. COULD be stress from a new environment, but yeah, do what I suggested (Test water with non-strip testing, feed him pellets or fresh bloodworms(Though they're just a treat) and monitor him closely for signs of badness/more symptoms). Fish are okay I guess.

    My dad really liked fish.

I never much got into them.

    I like the colorful ones.

    Daaaaang.

I was gonna post a pic of a cool tank we have at the zoo but yours is better.

    Hell, I'll post it anyway.

    d4xu2iW.jpg

But I love the one you posted. Tanks with in-water/out-of-water regions can look amazing. I really want a paludarium when I ever get my own house.

My dad once had a pair of African piranha.

He was trying to breed them to sell at his fish store.

One day he finally put them in a tank together and left them overnight.

When they came back there wasn't much left that could be identified as a fish.

What does it mean if their clamped is it a bad thing? D:

    yeah >: It's not a good thing

It could really easily be a temp thing too. You should get a digital thermometer, they're pretty great. You might also want to consider a little heater, the spec tanks are great but that really is one thing they're missing. Any temperature fluctuation during the day could cause him stress. Getting his temp to a STABLE 77-78 could do a whole world of good for him.

Try not to worry TOO much, i mean, it could just be stress from new decorations and adjusting. You can also do the garlic trick, where you use a jar of garlic and you drop a pellet or two into the juice right before you feed them to him. The garlic can stimulate hunger in them. And mind you, they can go a week+ without food so. Don't freak out. Just keep trying to get him to eat. You can also use fresh cloves.

I wonder how much a little tank for my bedroom would cost to get setup.

I should ask my step brothers if they would help me with that.

Then again I hear smaller tanks are harder to maintain because any little disturbance throws off the entire tank much more easily.

So maybe something mid sized out in the living room.

little tanks are cool as fuck, but mind you that the smaller tank you go the harder it can actually be to maintain because it's harder to maintain water. I recommend a 10-20 gallon for anyone starting out. Unless you want to go the betta-fish route.

also omg smof that tank is B-E-A-UTIFUL!!

I miss my fishtank. It's still in my bedroom at my parents house. It was only pretty basic, with platys and some shrimp and a SHITLOAD of vallis oh my god never using vallis again. But I also had little corydoras and some shrimp which were super fun to watch.

Now it's just got my dad feeding them when he remembers and it only gets water-changed/cleaned every few months when I go home to visit. The fish seem to be fine with it, but it's a waste it being there with nobody appreciating it.

Love it!! Looks very clean. You should try adding a plant for him to hide behind/in though, that would probably help cut down on any stress. An Anubias tucked away in the corner maybe? That's a LOT of gravel, it can definitely handle roots.

you should deffo try the garlic trick in addition to the rest of the advised treatments

it sounds weird but it's worked for me before when I was having a super similar problem to yours

I just want to say that you sound like a really fucking fantastic fish owner, you're actually actively searching for a solution for your problems rather than just saying ah fuckit it's just a fish. I am sure King appreciates having such a good person taking care of him. : > Blub.

I've got two active tanks at the moment, and both seem reasonably healthy. I need to get a bit more proactive about water changes again, but they're both pretty stable at the moment.

My 10-gal tank actually ends up holding closer to 7 gallons, because its main occupants are a sexed pair of African clawed frogs, and they jump out of full tanks whenever given the chance. Their tankmates are a few heterandria formosa, six red cherry shrimp (that number's gonna increase now that my females are berried), and a couple of ghost shrimp. Marimo and water sprite are the two plants there for show, if anything is. Also about 300g of elodea, though I dispose of a bit of that as feeder material for my other tank. The elodea acts as a crazy good buffer for water quality because it eats ammonia like candy, but of course I still change water regularly.

My other tank is my "nano-pond", as I've dubbed it. It's a 25 gallon office storage bin with a filter suction cupped to the side. Current residents are some heterandria formosa and three marmorkreb strain crayfish. I toss them some elodea and shrimp pellets and they eat both readily.

I also culture daphnia for the fish in both tanks. Heterandria formosa are basically guppies, but smaller, and they'll pick up anything from spare food to algae, but the daphnia's their own dedicated thing.

  • smofsmof [Growling historic on the fury road] Registered User regular
Shrimp are great fishtank residents. I have a bunch of Amano shrimp and they don't come out much but when they are out they are so funny to watch. And the bamboo shrimp with their crazy jazz hands.

Maaaaan I want my fishtank so bad now.

  • Mortal SkyMortal Sky queer punk hedge witchRegistered User regular
My ghost shrimps are fun to watch. I call my oldest Rambo because she figured out how to stalk the elodea forest faster than any of her mates. Her mates got eaten. Feeder life is tough. She's been in the tank since day one, and as long as her main predators have.
When I drop in the frogs' pellets, Rambo immediately dashes over and grabs one, pulls it up to her mouth using her little arms, and runs off to safety before the frogs even show up. The other ghost shrimps, who are newer, don't do this nearly as often or as quickly.

Fun fact: if you have the money, the tank size, and the insanity, you can buy one of these. They're also right proper difficult to keep and you're better off with a large fish that won't break glass.
