goodness, my local library doesn't seem to have any Donald Harington books
not even the ebook library service
this is a travesty
Total bummer. It's a damn shame how little Harington is known outside of Arkansas. He is great
If you get the chance to read Archeticture of the Arkansas Ozarks (which yes, is a novel) Choiring of the Trees, or With. Do so. Dude rules. Granted, I might oversell them a bit, as I've been to a lot of the places the inspired locales in the books.
Whomp! has been in a real slump lately. I know you guys don't like it when I am self-deprecating and all, but I just wanna let you know I know Whomp! has been in a poorly place and I hope to get back to good soon.

Ronnie if the denizens of this forum enjoyed Whomp any more whole-heartedly it
You know what i can't think of an appropriate simile here
You make the most universally loved webcomic that's posted in this thread

Ronnie the simple solution to this is to go into a lingerie store.
You will get material for months
On a side note a thirty year old man cannot walk into that store to buy perfume for his girlfriend without feeling like a sex criminal
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

You're like a week out from the surreal as hell nuggman comic that had people retroactively coming up with connections from old comics like you're Andrew Hussie or some shit, you're doing good.

Whomp! amuses me greatly. I have to say that the "fat guys eat a lot" cliché gets used a bit often, but well.. they do
I know you're being nice, and I very much appreciate you, but I kinda feel I don't even do that cliche very often, and it's always relevant to my life when i do

Just keep doing your thing, it's what made whomp! that great in the first place. And if you're not sure what your thing is, then think about it. Everyone has periods of time they feel down, but the best people are always most critical of themselves.
I like to think of it as similar to bad hair days. You look at yourself and think "jesus christ, that looks horrible", and when you ask someone else, they say "hey, it looks like it always does", often prompting a inside, when the proper reaction is
"Mosquitoes are delectable things to eat and they're easy to catch," says aquatic entomologist Richard Merritt, at Michigan State University in East Lansing. In the absence of their larvae, hundreds of species of fish would have to change their diet to survive. "This may sound simple, but traits such as feeding behaviour are deeply imprinted, genetically, in those fish," says Harrison. The mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), for example, is a specialized predator — so effective at killing mosquitoes that it is stocked in rice fields and swimming pools as pest control — that could go extinct. And the loss of these or other fish could have major effects up and down the food chain.
and then later on
With many options on the menu, it seems that most insect-eaters would not go hungry in a mosquito-free world. There is not enough evidence of ecosystem disruption here to give the eradicators pause for thought.
how does that fit with the first statement?
Actually, gambusia affinis is a relatively inefficient mosquitofish, as they're decently large for a poecilid (same family as guppies) and can/will eat other fish and insect larvae to the point of being harmful, and especially if there are no effective predators for them in a given environment.
Heterandria formosa makes a much better mosquitofish for that reason. Also, H. formosa are just the cutest little buggers. I keep them at home because they're like mini tiger striped guppies.

For the most part all of his books take place in a fictional town called Stay More, so there is a lot of crossover in names and places, but it's generally all stand alone stuff.
That said Architecture is basically a novel written in the guise of college lectures that covers the history of the town. (it reads more like short stories really) But it was my first book of his, and I think if you read it first, it might make a lot of the connections a lot more clear in other books. I think Enduring was the only one that was supposed to have a particular place, and it was meant to end the Stay More cycle.
And i haven't read Butterfly Weed or Further Along yet.
With however, is great. I was really worried when I first picked up though. As it's billed as girl alone in the Arkasas, Ozarks with animals as her only friends. And I was well into developing Eve at that point. But yeah. It's waaaay different from what I'm doing. Waaay different, and definitely not for kids. Which yeah, I suppose that's basically all his books.
Also not necessary at all, but Vance Randolph makes a great companion piece to a lot of his work. Randolph was a folklorist who just walked around the Ozarks and wrote the stuff people told him. He did one book called Pissing in the Snow, which is basically just a dirty joke book from the Ozarks. And yeah, Harington loved that book I'm sure.
