    THE OBVIOUS JOKE!

I get the joke, and it's certainly a "feature" of The Last of Us. But can you imagine how awful the experience would be without that feature? If the noises of Ellie, Bill, and others were to alert the clickers, there would be no such thing as stealth, the element of surprise, or even survival.

    It is better this way.

  • RedthirstRedthirst Registered User regular
Can someone please expain this to me? I know that Clickers is some kind of zombie which uses sound to see his enemy. But why can't he attack that girl with the drum?

Apparently developing an NPC AI that would always be quiet and stealthy and not constantly get you killed is beyond the developers, so instead the AI is dumb and the zombies totally ignore the NPCs.

Technically the zombie can attack the little girl once it's been alerted to the fact that she's there, thing is that only can happen with the player controlled character, not the AI controlled one.

    Ha!

I thought about that last night too. Tess, Ellie... they're all so noisy! I'm glad Naughty Dog made the game how they did, though. Just funny to see them running around scuffing shoes, bumping things and making noise with no consequence. I'm sitting there "WIll you guys keep it down...Jesus! Am I the only professional here?!" *scootch a half a centimeter to the right and knock a bucket over*

... goddammit. And suddenly I'm the belle of the ball at Clicker Prom...

Typically it isn't noticeable. The NPCs are actually very good at staying in cover and not doing dumb things. And in fact some of the animations they have created are brilliant. Like the one where Joel and Ellie have to "stack up" on the same piece of cover and he puts his arm over her. It's awesome, and so fluid.

But very rarely the immersion is broken and the NPCs will do something dumb. Or loud. And then you realize that you are invincible as long as your character remains in stealth and unseen.

I kind of appreciate when developers will do something like this. I almost gave up on Left 4 Dead's single player because it never fucking failed that one of those idiots would use three blasts from his autoshotgun to kill one lone zombie that I was about to brain with a baseball bat anyway, setting off the alarm on the car with the witch crying on the hood in the process and getting us all killed.

I mean, sure, I'd love for AI that can actively help and adapt to match my strategies, but I understand the difficulties there and I will gladly settle for the AI not actively making shit worse.

Well the problem here is that Left 4 Dead doesn't have a single player, it just has coop, vs, and "no friends" coop.

Ctrl-Alt-Del did the news post on this...

Maybe not go for the obvious one?

  • kingworkskingworks Registered User regular
Dumb question: Why are they called 'Clickers?'

  • GaslightGaslight Registered User regular
Since they're blind, they navigate and perceive their surroundings through echolocation, making the eponymous clicking noises as they move around.

  • LucascraftLucascraft Registered User regular
Because they click. They make insect-like clicking noises. It's very off putting, actually.

Also, why are people criticizing them for the "obvious joke" here. Who cares if both Ctl Alt Del and PA both say the same thing. This is what was on their mind. Both the PA comic and the CAD news post came out on the same day, so this is simply a matter of being the subject that is on the mind of the satirists.

That would be like criticizing Jay Leno and David Letterman for both making a joke on the same night about something dumb that someone did. If it's on their mind, that's what they're going to talk about.

  • ArmoredchocoboArmoredchocobo Avian LP extraordinaire Registered User regular
I'd say it's the lesser of two evils, you got at least a CHANCE to live with the "ignore everyone but the player" feature.

One thing I'd like to see is the zombies don't ignore other non-zombies. Throw a noisemaker over to some hostile NPCs and watch the Clicker doing what comes naturally.

People don't want to admit that great minds think alike, because they refuse to accept either one party or the other had a great mind.

The thing that bothers me watching gameplay footage of this game is that it seems like you can make as much damn noise as you want (jumping around, pushing big metal file cabinets) as long as there isn't a Clicker in the immediate area. Shouldn't they come running? Being attracted to noise is a standard trope even for ordinary zombies.

The best part of this comic was the first paragraph of Tycho's post.
Would you believe that the family machine in their office had fully three virus scanners running at once? They were scanning each others’ virus scans. It ran like there was a tiny person inside of it twiddling knobs here and there, and the entire computer was full of little stairs.

Is it weird that I think the zombie in the comic is kind of pretty? Like, I know they are p creepy in the game, but that drawing

It looks like an exotic, anthropomorphic flower in bloom
An exotic, anthropomorphic flower in bloom that also kills people because a fungus is eating its brain, but hey

Holy shit that guy's annoying, he's like a more-informative PewDiePie.

It's true that the AI is pretty cool, the animations are really neat and the things they do are interesting. It's also true, however, that they have no concept of avoiding the enemy. Fortunately they tend to stay behind you, but every once in awhile you will notice them storm right past a Clicker or right in sight of another enemy.

It's especially bad when you meet Bill. He's a big guy and his footsteps reflect that. A lot of that section is about being sneaky, but every time you move you hear Bill's thunderous running as he tries to keep up.

As for the "obvious joke" thing, I don't think the joke being obvious ruined it, I still laughed, but it was obvious. It seems to me that you can't possibly play the game without making the observation this joke is based on. I'm not sure the "great minds" thing said above can be used here, unless everyone has a great mind.

The first time Clickers are explained, it's hard to imagine anyone not having a moment of panic when one of the AI goes sprinting past one, before realizing the AI is immune to detection.

I think the flaw in the obvious joke criticism is in saying that because it's obvious it isn't funny. A lot of jokes are funny because they are obvious. This is a really well drawn, amusing comic about a shared experience. It plays on the fact that this is so obvious. It's a "funny cause it's true" comic.

Man, analyzing and trying to explain humor is so gross.

Suuuuper tight butthole clench at that first big dark room full of clickers...

When I got to that room, I had to stop lounging into the couch. I sat forward and focused... and Tess is stomping around running right near them. "Tess... what the FUCK?!"

"Wait..what? Ohhhhhh they wont attack the AI unless I alert them. Neat!"

The new episode of the podcast is I think a perfect example of Mike's process (the part about people coming out as atheists). He has an initial reaction to it that he doesn't feel the need to censor. When he has a frank discussion about it with someone like Jerry or Sophie, he doesn't just stubbornly stick to his first impression like 99% of the internet. He's more open to changing his views (when shown a different viewpoint) than most people I've met. The podcast portion ended with "well, I don't think those people are dumb anymore."

If you hurl 140 characters of vitriol at him, he'll probably hurl some back, no matter what the topic or viewpoint is. At least when his granite slab is packed up out of reach, anyway.

I agree. Unfortunately it's a really touchy topic, I was mostly just commenting on how in the interest of protecting hurt feelings it's something that is bannable on the forums, yet discussion (as shown in Mike's case, AND in the case where I pissed someone off on the forums) can change a lot of perspectives. Mine changed.

It's something that most people don't think about every day. And it's something that some people think about every moment of their lives. Of course our gut reaction is to lash out when one side's being called intolerant when they don't understand what they're being intolerant of.

That's pretty much all I had to say about this while it was still relevant, and before Tube kills me.

Fact is there's only one answer to any type of social situation.
If someone wants to define who they are without harm or actual, not imagined, repercussions to others, then that is their choice. The only person who can define you is you. When it comes to any community, and especially when it comes to communities just finding their voices, the only person who decides what your identifiers are and what they mean, is you. And screw any dictionary nazis.
