SEGA AND NINTENDO JOIN FORCES FOR MARIO & SONIC AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES

Legendary Icons Appear Together for the First Time in Video Game History

TOKYO (March 28, 2007) – SEGA® Corporation and Nintendo Co. Ltd. today made a historical announcement that two of the biggest icons in the entertainment industry, Mario™ and Sonic™, are joining forces to star in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Developed for the Wii™ video game system and the Nintendo DS™ system, this momentous agreement marks the first time these two renowned stars have appeared together in a game.

Published by SEGA across Europe and North America, and published by Nintendo in the Japanese market, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will be available for Holiday 2007 and is licensed through a worldwide partnership with International Sports Multimedia (ISM), the exclusive interactive entertainment software licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players will compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers will be able to compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi™, Knuckles™, Yoshi®, Tails™ and more. Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favorite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.

“We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title,” said Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer, SEGA Corporation. “For the first time, two of the world’s greatest games’ characters come together to compete in the world’s greatest sporting event and we couldn’t be more excited.”

“Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games,” says Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.. “In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?”

“The Olympic Games represent the true spirit of competition and passion,” said Raymond Goldsmith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ISM. “Bringing together intensely competitive and fun characters like Mario and Sonic in an Olympic setting helps showcase the sports of the Olympic Games in a new and compelling way for all generations.”

For further information on this title please visit www.sega-press.com for Europe and the SEGA FTP for America at: http://segapr.segaamerica.com.

Now, the question is: will SEGA drag them both down, or will Nintendo manage to overcome the suckitude?

This is interesting. But do you guys think present-day Sonic is still worthy of starring in a game along with Mario anymore, since they really squandered his reputation in recent years with lots of godawful games?

Anyway this probably means he is in SSB Brawl as well.

I was going to say "Hey! It's not April 1st yet!", but apparently this is on Sega's website. Probably the last thing people would expect to see in a Mario/Sonic crossover (If Snake's in Smash Bros. but Sonic isn't, the world makes a little less sense). Still, I suppose it's probably the only way they'll actually get anyone to buy one of those Olympics games after years and years of terrible games based on the Olympics.

wait, surely sonic is faster? isnt that his whole thing?

mario will win the high jump, long jump and (lol) triple jump. Probably the shell toss as well, but sonic is all about the running fast!

oh well, great to see them finally in a game together, even if it is an olympics title i'll likely never play.

It can be found on both Sega's and Nintendo's sites, and MCV has also released press release.

EDIT: ISM has also released its own press release, so it is legit:

I just don't understand how they're going to fit this in to either franchise's deep and ongoing continuity. I mean, is this before or after Mario went on vacation? Is this after Sonic discovered humanity, or before?

This is really going to wreck havoc when Mario Galaxy comes out, I'll tell you that.

You can seriously say, with a straight face, that SEGA hasn't completely ruined Sonic? Every new game they announce is only met with the worst of forecasts, and they're almost always right. SEGA can't make a Sonic game worth balls anymore, and I think they should give up.

...Mario can move pretty fast, really, and Sonic's only depicted as Roadrunner/Speedy Gonzales-like in cartoons. It usually takes something like a speed pad or a spring or gravity to get him to those REALLY high speeds.

An obstacle course would be more fun, anyway. Advantage: Mario in such a case.

...man, I can't even believe this is real.

Mario & Sonic's first game together = Awesome.

Olympic games tie-in = Very weird. For some reason, licenses like these give me bad vibes. Non-movie licensed games have a terrible pedigree, not that movie games are much better.

If they ever do this again it should be an epic 2D platforming game of epic proportions. Hell, make it have RPG type elements like Super Paper Mario and give it a kick ass story. Make it like Halo 2 where you switch from playing Mario to Sonic at different times, make them rivals working against each other until a certain point. Really play up the old-school console wars. It'd be excellent.

So, I thought I would post this so we could get an idea of what kinds of events we might see. There are some really interesting ones there too that I would not have even thought of. Archery, boxing, fencing, shooting . . . those would be really nice to see.

I can see this as being something like Wii Sports meshed with Mario Party. That certainly wouldn't be too bad.

Which is IMO still quite enjoyable. Eventhough i don't want to destroy my Wii-Pad with the old Lightertrick that demolished my two Playstationpads for the 100m Dash.
