apparently you can capture people and shoot points, or something along those lines

For any of y'all just starting out that have the dlc the assignments are a good way to nab a few unlocks early so you have more than just the starter guns at your disposal

i have no idea how you go about unlocking the various attachments, though

Until you get to 100 kills with that weapon. Then it's at 100, 125, 150, 200 etc until you've got them all.

Nope. It is different for every weapon class. I used to think the first ten was always optics but it's definitely not. Sometimes a shotgun will pop a laser first or a PDW will get an extended mag.

I also strongly suggest getting onto Battlelog.

Follow your stats, find out what you're expecting to unlock next, play according to the things that will be most effective for you.

Also creep on other players, like here's mine for example.
