Cis is someone whose biological sex organs corresponds with their traditional gender identity roles.

So someone born with a penis and testes, who identifies as a male. Or someone with a vagina and ovaries that identifies as a female.

Someone please correct me if I am off base with this, but

An important note is that sex and gender are different things

Sex is the biological aspect, gender is the social construct

So it is very possible to be a 'girl' or a 'boy' trapped inside the wrong body

Cis is when there is no contradiction within a person

In the context of gender, cis is short for cisgendered. If your gender identity matches the sex you were born with, then you're cisgendered. A transgendered person's gender identity doesn't match their original sex.

(I am relatively uninformed, so I apologize if there are subtleties I'm missing.)

    Edit: clarity

Cis is also opposed to trans, which is when sex corresponds to a different gender identity.

so basically the idea is that your gender identity is something independent of your actual gender?
    that seems precarious.

There is no difference between your gender identity and your "actual" gender.

Your "actual gender" is whatever it is you identify as

Sometimes it is different than the biological sex you are born as

By "actual gender" you are referring to sex. That is your biology. Gender identity is in the mind.

It may not match up with your biological sex organs.

What you are calling "actual gender" is you Sex: the biological organs you are born with.

But Gender is what you identify yourself as. They are not the same.

A trans female, someone born as a male but who identifies as female (someone correct me if I am screwing this up please) would be referred to as a woman. Therefore that statement would be inaccurate. It's subtle.

  • BroloBrolo Broseidon Lord of the BroceanRegistered User regular
And there are some people who are born with vaginas that might not consider themselves women.

Because 'Woman' is a label used to identify gender

And since gender is a social construct

"all women have vaginas" is a demonstrably false statement, and is thus a sweeping generalization bred out of being misinformed, or willfully ignorant

    They are not the same.

And this is where Gabe/Mike got people pissed at him, because he was claiming that "if you have a vagina, you are a woman, and if you're a woman, you must have a vagina."

This, for many people, is simply not true, because sex and gender are independent of each other, and just because you are born with a vagina doesn't necessarily mean that you fit in with society's definition of the "female" gender.

but they are male, the thing that makes them transgendered is they lack female qualities. right?
if having a vagina is not a property of female, then what is female? it can't be relative.

ah, not a native speaker! there's the disconnect

"female" is the terminology that applies to the sex of a person. "woman" is a gender label. someone might identify as a woman without being biologically female

They are transgendered because their gender identity does not match their sex, correct

However you seem to be confusing terms

Someone born as a bilogical female can still identify as a male

Gender is in the mindscape, sex is the physical biology

i am a native speaker. i am just confused as the conceptual differences that have been drawn between the concepts, since there apparently is one and i can't work it out on my own.

Also there is the problem where language sometimes falls short in the clarity department, I can understand the initial confusion

I'm locking this because I don't believe you're acting in good faith. There are better places than this for you to educate yourself on trans issues.

    geth, close the thread.
