French Bulldog, Health Advice

PantshandshakePantshandshake Registered User regular
Good day, PA. The time has come again where I actually have a question, instead of trying to help and then making weird jokes.

So, I've got this French Bulldog, his name is EJ. He's the one in my picture on the left there, but I'll certainly put up more action shots of him sleeping if you want. My questions about him are many, but I've shortened it down thusly:

First, he's got a bit of a sweet tooth for the poop of other dogs. Never his own. Unfortunately, I've got 4 other dogs. So, we've tried pills for him and for the other dogs to kick that habit, they didn't work. We then tried a host of home remedies, including meat tenderizer, hot sauce (EJ fucking loves hot sauce, turns out...) and shaking my fist at him, like an old man at kids in his yard. Nothing worked. Anyone have any ideas here?

Second, due to the coprophagia, he ingested a bunch of rocks. My wife works part time at a vet, off we went. They did an xray, saw his stomach was full of rocks, scheduled him for an operation the next day. Next day arrives, a second xray is taken, 3 rocks have moved into the intestine. He's taken out to use the dog potty area, then the surgery starts. Lo and behold, several rocks passed completely out, and the rest are now in his intestine. So, he gets stitched back up. Over the next few days, he was lightly coughing off and on, and vomited a few times. (This was all background for my second question.)

Back to the vet we go, and EJ's got pneumonia, from aspirating whatever was in his esophagus, because he's also got "Mega Esophagus." My question, because our vet seems stumped (she's also trying to charge us for the surgery that could have been avoided by an xray before opening up my dog, so I don't really want to talk to her right now...) is this: Aside from feeding him from a raised bowl, is there anything we can do? And, is my dog aspirating food and water, and then getting pneumonia (or some other kind of infection) something I'm just going to have live with?

Any help or advice would be most welcome.

i have heard pineapple juice works for the poop too, but its been a while since i have looked into it.

also as someone who had a dog who ate tons of stuff when they were little, a good rule of thumb is unless they stop eating or pooping, its not obstructed and watch closely. obviously mileage may vary but my dog has passed weird shit that we had no idea she ate.

also get a new vet. the fact that they jumped into surgery without checking an xray after pooping on a possible obstruction is ridiculous.

Also if your dog is prone to eating foreign objects look into insurance.

Oh, he didn't stop eating, but he would vomit up whatever he ate, since he was already full of rocks.

As far as getting a new vet, the other two actual vets that work there are much, much, much better.

He's not prone to eating anything aside from the poop. The rocks, they were stuck to the poop. We had an area that was covered in gravel at the base of the stairs going to the dog's part of the yard. It's no longer covered in gravel.

I've no idea what to do about your dog eating rocks (!?!?).

About him eating your other dogs' poo, pick up your other dogs' poo so he cannot or is not tempted to eat them. Otherwise general rule of thumb applies, watch him and bring him inside if he's eating stuff he shouldn't be.

Oh, I've been diligent with the cleanup, since it's a health issue now, and not just a 'gross dog thing.'

He's a well behaved dog, he follows commands, but the siren's call of fresh dog poop is too much for him. So what I'm looking for here is a solution when I can't be cleaning up. Example, if I'm doing some yard work for several hours, I don't want to either lock the other dogs in their crates, or just EJ.

I don't really have an answer for you, but the poop-eathing thing is not all that uncommon in the breed. Frenchies are kinda known for it. We had one that would eat her own constantly. We never found a way to stop her.

From what little I know about mega esophagus, you just need an elevated food bowl or you can set up a feeding stand like so:

which, aside from looking REALLY ADORABLE, will help a lot if you can train your dog to use it.

We went with the elevated bowl, it seemed easier. It seems to be working, the only things to come out of his mouth recently are horrific belches and phlegm from his ongoing battle with pneumonia.
