Looking for an old arcade game.
So I know this is a long shot, but I've been looking for an old arcade game for many years and just can't seem to find it. This would have been sometime between '82-'92 (my heart says it's in the '88-'89 period, but could be earlier). We had a skating rink at the local park that had a few arcade games, and there was this one game that was kind of like a side-scroller/shooter. It was 2-player (I think) and the characters were super-deformed (I think). At least one of the characters was a wizard/witch (possibly a girl) with a magic wand, and shot magic bolts/sparks out of the wand to attack enemies. It was a side-scroller that had two levels on screen that you could jump between (lower or upper level). It had cutesy graphics. I can't remember any other details.
Been hounding me for many years now, and I always wondered what it was.

Top Hunter has that top/bottom path thing, two players, and one is a girl. I know there's another game that's pretty similar, trying to think of the name.

Strangely, there was a similar Genesis game called Dashin' Desperadoes that has a top/bottom split screen...
Definitely not the other two.

Lol, I confess it's been over 20 years since I played it, and my memory is fading. Every year or two I spend several hours scouring the internet for obscure arcade games trying to find it again.
I really appreciate your help. First ray of hope I have had in a long time.
I love these threads, helping to find these games is always fun. Although it's backfired on me.
Now I can't remember the name of some game that I was reminded of while searching for this. I thought it was actually discussed on these forums, but I'm not seeing it in any of the threads I've read. I just remember it being a side-scrolling action platformer type, where you play as a girl or princess or witch who shoots a laser. And then learned new spells/projectiles at the end of each level.
?
It was a more anime game, very cutesy. I thought it was actually in one of your threads, it seemed about Sega CD/Saturn era. I remember the name didn't quite seem to fit the game or match the story or something.
You're description is kinda vauge... there are hundreds of games with little anime girl witches who gain powers. You sure she shot lasers? What do you mean by side scrolling action? Was it a shmup?
Was it a cute 'em up?
Was it an action-RPG?
I'm pretty sure someone here was talking about it within the last few months, like they'd rediscovered it or wanted to share it with everyone. Which is why I was sure it was a TSR thread.
I'm pretty sure you got new spells? Like I said, I didn't actually play this game, someone was just talking about it/reviewing it. I think they said you got new spells/attacks, and they all had uses. But there was some disadvantage to switching or trying to use them all. Ugh. I'm checking my YouTube history to see if there was a video for it. Hopefully.

Well I sorta-recently did a write-up on Turrican where I spent a good amount of time talking about the utilitarian aspects of the weapontry in the game and the pros and cons of each and how they related to level design, but that isn't a witch, and you don't gain new weapons, and it's not really from the time you're talking about. I don't think I'd written any other articles more recent than that, that I'd have posted on PA at least.
I'm gonna catch some sleep, I'll throw out more games in the morning.
I remember playing Athena on the NES as a child. It was rented a handful of times and I was never any good at it. That brings to mind Clash at Demonhead, another game I rented (though I rented it a lot) and was never any good at.
I am also reminded of Keith Courage in Alpha Zones for some reason. My aunt had a TG16 and I used to love that game, along with Bonk, Dungeon Explorer, and R-Type.
I actually found Pop'n Magic first, by looking through every PC Engine game alphabetically, which jogged my memory. Here's the post I can blame for this. @Zephiran

This was the review I read.

Glad that's over. Although now my entire night is gone. Almost as bad as that time I spent an entire day trying to think of another game I'd never played, and had to dig through old GamePros to find the one preview with the one screenshot I remembered. Which is actually the third image you get when searching Final Zone II, so at least it's a fairly popular screenshot.
Love that gif.
Also, sorry I didn't take a peek in the thread earlier, I could've saved you a night of searching man.
I got a little excited when I saw your ship.
I love the TG-16, but damn I hate that game, haha. That was the first TG-16 game I got (a day before blazing lazers) and my friends used to make fun of it. To this day, my best friend can't remember the name of it, he calls it "Johnny and the Amazing Rainbow Robot."
Did you know there was a spiritual sequel on the Super Grafx? Granzort. It's much improved... but I still don't like it very much.
i always thought this game was great. Maybe it was the part where riding a giant rainbow turned you into a robot.
