Hey guys, my daughter and I recently went out and found a bunch of cool rocks, and the picture below shows one of them. I need help identifying the metal!
I know there is marble in the area, as it was previously a marble quarry. I was thinking pyrite, but no longer certain with the rainbow metal on the other side. It was found near Victorville, CA for reference if that helps.
Edit: Let me know if the pictures are shitty and you need a closeup of a specific detail.
I don't know if your town has any foundries, but that looks to me like slag, which is the stuff left over when you smelt metal ore and take out the good stuff. Is it crumblier and lighter than you'd expect a rock to be?
Its heavy as fuck.
I actually think it's pyrite. It was in the middle of a giant rock that had been split, so it doesn't seem to be an artificial chunk.
@Radiation Did Minecraft teach you NOTHING?! That's iron ore. Most definitely. Get 2 more and you can make a bucket.
In all seriousness I have no freakin' clue what that is. I find it fascinating that people can dig these things up and I find it even more fascinating to learn what they are.
Well, it *looks* like chalcopyrite, but there are a lot of related and very similar-looking sulfide minerals that are near impossible to distinguish from a photo. Your best bet is to get a streak plate and narrow it down a bit. It doesn't look like slag to me.
Also, I'm assuming you're asking about the brassy coating on the larger lump (although if it's heavy, I'd guess that lump probably contains one of the iron oxide minerals, or maybe one of the denser sulfides like galena).
I'm going to break it open more as the picture was just a smaller bit chopped off from the larger chunk. The chunk itself is weird as part of it shows gold, other shows an...iron looking metal, and still other bits showed the rainbow pattern. It has a very distinct smell as well after handling it (sort of sulfur-ish).
Thought I was going to work on it today but it's been stupid hot, I may do it in a few. Not sure if I could get a decent picture tonight though. Hopefully post something tomorrow. Chalcopyrite looks damn amazing. I must have it.
Alright, went to have it cut today. The guy wasn't too sure what it was, other than something like pyrite maybe....also Iron.....also maybe Bornite. Anyways, here are some pictures. I'm a bit sad about what came up with the cut portion. I mean, it looks cool but I think I was expecting more of the Bornite to be present in it.

Echoing Typhoid, that looks like slag to me as well.
