What the hell is with Assetbar?
I don't like the new setup for Achewood.

I dunno, man. Even the process of editing your profile is loaded with the tone of achewood humour. And now comments on every strip?

    This thing is going places.

There's a really simple solution. Don't click on the strip. Then you can just enjoy it in it's original format. Unless of course you're one of those people that secretly likes to do stuff just so they can later complain about how much they supposedly hate it.

No, he's clearly too eloquent and wordly for the likes of us. All women dislike him, he only drinks Blue Nun.

But anywho, Skub. Skub was not supposed to be anything. It's basically nothing. The joke is they start a brawl over nothing.

PDF has such a pure formula I would almost label anti-absurdism. It'll present a fanciful situation, like an army of talking bears fighting lions, where the reader suspends disbelief and makes assumptions on what's going to happen or how things work in the situation, only to have that all pulled away when the 'twist' reveals the reality of the situation: The counter-offensive fails because Sergeant Grumbles is a goddamn bear. He is stupid for honey, no whimsy, no unexpected fanciful twist.

    YES

This is exactly what PBF's formula is.

That really is a perfect description of PBF's formula. SMBC, too, is very formulaic. The situation is set up in the comic; the punchline arrives in the caption. The punchline is always either a completion of the situation, as in "Green Lantern lost his ring", or a bait-n-switch, as in "Daddy, what's heaven?"

I didn't dig on the GOF as much as most people, but really liked the mexican magic arc, which a lot did not

I love the mexican magical realism arc...and sadly to say, that's probably because of the interp of lit class I took my freshman year of college.

it caused me to buy 100 years of solitude

I like the arc, but I thought it ended too abruptly. It sounded like it was developing into something significant, but nothing really changed except for the departure of a minor character. I mean, when the Earth itself says it's not going to be okay this time, it shouldn't be freaking okay this time. Yeah, you can assume it was talking to the other guy, but still...

I don't see how one could view Achewood as pretentious.

Just because the brand of humor in a specific comic is funny and actually makes people laugh every once in a while doesn't make it pretentious. It's no more pretentious than higher-quality mainstream TV comedies like the Office.

I think people are just so used to comics being...not necessarily unfunny, but rather...dumb...a mechanism where a couple words are traded and a lame punchline is given. It's no wonder cartoonists like Kurtz, who has about the most washed-out cliche' humor I've ever read, to feel threatened by Achewood. (Ironically, Kurtz hates the sitcom Friends).

A typical PVP strip (don't get me wrong, I read the strip quite regularly):

Brent: Hey Jade, you'll never get me to take you to the BRA STORE!
Jade: *does something flirty or says something provacative*
Cut to: Brent looking bored at a BRA STORE OMG with Jade. Comedy gold.
