Oh man. I ran into a merchant traveling the same speed as me at warp that kept changing course to intercept me. I finally decide to drop out of warp to let him past and the frigging thing drops out of warp too. Was tempted to make some star dust, but just boosted for a little while and then jumped back into warp.

The game has some weird thing with warp and relative speed. I caught up to a group of miners in warp on my way to a station and my speed towards the station dropped precipitously. When I finally got out of range of the ships it picked up again.

I've also noticed that while in warp I will slow way down when passing by a nebula or asteroid field, as if my warp drive is saying "hey, you wanna stop and check out this nebula? Huh? Huh?"

No... no I'm good, I just want to get to my station and complete this bounty.

It's not weird really, the game is just designed to drop your speed when you are near other objects (be it other ships or celestial objects) so you can more easily decide if you want to check something out, or just SEE something a little better. If you were always going max warp then anything not along your vector would basically zip by so fast you wouldn't realize it (aside for huge things like nebulae.)

Don't try flying around a planet at warp, skimming the atmosphere (but not enough for the emergency stop to activate) when you've a merc; the merc will merrily shortcut to you through the planet and blow up.

I've reached a point in the story where it wants to send me to one of the outlying systems but I don't have anywhere near the firepower for it yet. I've gotten a few weapon drops from npcs. The stuff I've picked up seems like it would be better than the default stuff sold on the stations if they weren't lower mark. Does anyone know if it's possible to make nice with the Korrian or Greel, etc and then buy their ships/weapons?

I had to replace my Merc too. Sparrow is awesome! But she got shot down so I have a robot merc named Steve now. I tried a Murath named Grud. He was expensive(not as expensive as Steve but a lot more than Sparrow). Unfortunately he sucked.

Man, you take that back, Grud is awesome. I've taken them into some intense firefights and they came out on top. Unfortunately, no smarter than any other merc when it comes to not flying into a planet...

For the big endgame firefights the gear sold at stations is just fine, just go to a system that sells higher rank stuff (R5 and up). Pricey but worth it.

I'm with you on "can I fly Greel ships please please PLEASE?", their stuff looks amazing.

I used this guide when the GoG verison first came out for my disk copies of TIE Fighter and X-Wing:

To be honest the combat in Rebel Galaxy is quite a bit less satisfying than Blag Flag. However, it also doesn't have all the terrible AC stuff along with it.

Yeah, I feel like they could have done quite a bit more to make the broadsides combat more satisfying and visceral. The sounds are too weak (mostly just a weak pew-pew) and they are so rapid fire that they don't really feel powerful. Also unless you are spamming them (like in a point blank situation) they fire at exactly the same time, losing that epic pow-p-p-pow-pow-pow-p-pow! that you got when firing broadsides in AC.

I dunno, it's a relatively minor thing but could have made the combat a lot more fun just in terms of "feel."

    New games on Steam!

    First up is Endless Sky.
Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship or to a massive fleet of warships or freighters. Earn money by carrying passengers or cargo, escorting convoys, bounty hunting, or plundering and capturing enemy ships. Take sides in a civil war, or ignore the story line and just enjoy exploring the galaxy and blasting pirates.

The main story line takes about 8-16 hours to play through. The galaxy contains hundreds of star systems and planets, and several alien species with their own unique technologies. You can choose between more than fifty ships and several hundred ship upgrades. A plugin system allows anyone with a text editor and a paint program to create new ships, weapons, or missions, and the galaxy editor can be used to add new star systems and planets.

Endless Sky is free, open source, and cross platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux). Over time, the game universe will expand as contributors add new missions, story lines, alien species, places to explore, sound effects, and artwork.
This video goes through it a bit, though it is about a month old so the current version on Steam may be a hair different.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fg23Rxq1FCw

    Second up is Galak-Z!
Prepare for the bar to be raised on deep-space 2D dog-fighting! GALAK-Z is a modern, A.I. and physics-driven open-world action game, viewed through the lens of the classic 16-bit space shooter. Powered by the next-generation Cyntient AI platform, GALAK-Z puts players in control of anime-inspired spacecraft inhabiting procedurally generated worlds.

In GALAK-Z both stealth and skill are required to defeat truly intelligent enemies. You will be forced to outsmart enemies that think, react and cooperate like seasoned pilots! Master your ship’s sublimely-honed controls as you blast enemies, unleash missile salvos, and even toss your opponents, mech-style, to their explosive demise.

New features include Arcade Mode which lets you replay failed missions any number of times without losing all of your saved progress. Rogue Mode retains GALAK-Z’s original white-knuckle roguelike challenge that harkens back to the 16-bit era of gaming. Rogue mode will always be available if and when you’re looking to test your skill and bravery by putting everything on the line, every mission.

Players will be forced to outmaneuver, outgun and outsmart enemies that think, react and cooperate like seasoned pilots. Both stealth and skill are required to defeat enemy squads in a brutal game of cat and mouse. Prepare for an enemy that comes alive like never before!

New ARCADE mode with per-Mission checkpoints!
    Procedurally-assembled levels
    Physics based combat simulator!
Advanced enemy A.I for intense dogfights!
    Scripted missions and ‘roguelite’ structure
    Resource-based, progressive weapons system
Inspired by 70s / 80s anime and arcade shooters
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvTyByXX_4Q

Just...just buy it. Shut the fuck up, go to Steam or your PS4, and fucking buy it and play the shit out of it. I've played this at PAX and it's so good. There's a fair amount of skill in learning to throw your ship around and maneuver it without smacking into things all while shooting down enemy ships and when you get the hang of it it feels like you're doing some straight up Robotech anime space shooter shit. It also does a really good job of feeling like one of those old school space fighter anime shows with its presentation. Definitely worth getting.

I feel like all the fundamentals are there -- like you could just obsessively tweak a bunch of numbers in a table for a month or so and end up with more strategic combat, punchier attacks, better damage control, useful secondary weapons... The devs aren't providing mod tools, but maybe someone will manage it anyway? It seems like such a prime candidate for both gameplay and content mods.
It'll get a bigger splash when it releases on consoles.

Ooh, I bet you're right about that. This close to Christmas, with limited resources, they probably want to do one big push for all the platforms. Thank you, I will hold this hope close to my heart and cherish it.

So, escort missions in Rebel Galaxy are still awful. I just attempted one where the guy went halfway across the system, turned around, went back to where we started, and turned around again to go in the original direction. That's when I demanded his cargo and abandoned the mission. I would have blown him up to protect the gene pool, but that doesn't seem possible with friendly ships.

In theory it challenges players that overuse hit and run tactics (which are always overly effective in space games) and can add much needed variety to genre that can go stale very quickly, which sounds nice, but then the game is usually designed around hit and run....

I imagine the rebel galaxy devs thought they could get away with it, as their game appears to be more of a battleship game than a space game.

Both the escort missions and the "rescue one ship" missions are stupid in Rebel Galaxy.

The escort missions take a stupid amount of time to complete compared to the other stuff and are consistently buggy/badly done. I've had escort missions I've had to abandon at the end because the target just kept warping away from and towards the endpoint without stop. The people you're escorting will also always stop to engage anything in the area, which can mean several extra minutes of mopping up harmless fighters because the ship won't freaking leave until everything is dead. On top of that, I'm certain that the craft you escort only have the basic or a low-powered warp engine, because they take forever to warp anywhere. 5-10 minutes of uneventful warp travel capped off with a "surprise" ambush is hardly shaking things up, and it's extremely tedious when I could travel the same distance in less than half that time alone.

The rescue missions, on the other hand, usually end up with me warping or jumping to the locations, fighting for less than a minute, and then having the mission fail because there isn't one damn thing I can do about a fleet of cap ships and fighters focusing on the guy I'm there to rescue; even if I blow through 2/3 of the enemies in 60 seconds, there are still more than enough to finish off the ship I'm there to rescue. Generally a complete waste of my time.

I will also say that the prevalence of missions requiring you to using a jumpgate really gets on my nerves. I hate flying to a place just to fly to another place. Just put the freaking mission in the same system.

Escorted ships fly unbelievably slowly. I am wondering if they fly at the speed of a stock warp drive to avoid dealing with ship configuration issues? If that's the case, the obvious answer is "if they can't fly at the player's speed, cheat and let everybody go fast." But, then, sometimes it seems like they're going half that fast? Really crawling. This issue does seem to be on the devs' radar -- you can fly straight through asteroids when you're warp-linked now -- so hopefully they'll continue to improve escort missions. Until then, yeah, it's never worth it to take one.

I have had better luck with rescue missions. Sometimes I can't save the target craft, but sometimes I can. At its best, it's nice and tense. I feel like both rescued craft and wingmen are going down too fast now that I'm getting higher in level -- and I'm not flying the giant ships yet -- so maybe it's just a scaling issue. Enemy craft clearly ramp up in number quicker than they ramp up in strength, so maybe ally and rescue craft just aren't scaling up fast enough. Especially when you are the only pilot in the sector who knows the "run away and come back" Ultimate Tactic of Doom.

Yay new ship! Upside, it's a lovely chunk of metal whose paintjob looks like someone was kicking it on the shop floor for a week. Downside, it has like half the cargo hold of my old one. Oh well, I'll settle for the Pink Floyd concert light show that are my broadsides now.

Hey someone mentioned Transcendence, which is great, because I wanted to gush about it!

Okay, so you know your Escape Velocities and what have you, right? You're top down, you've got a ship, you maybe talk to people sometimes, you go on a corking adventure through space, etc and so forth, yeah?

Well Transcendence is right there with you, but it offers something just a little meatier when it comes to how solar systems are presented for your adventuring. This is less about bouncing between ten stars in the course of thirty seconds, and more along the lines of flying across this one solar system to murder those pirates right over yonder. Yes, the ones with the stupid hats on.

No, those were civilians with stupid hats on. And now their habitat is full of holes and everyone is dead. Well done, hero.

    About those pirates?

And when you're done nosing around here and would you stop venting all those poor people to space- wait they were actually pirates, carry on - You will continue your journey into parts unknown and terrible through the warp gate you found earlier.

The main campaign is basically a roguelike transhumanist deathmarch, but the for money version of the game has a variation which promises a slightly less certain death sprinkled with corporate shenanigans, as well as at least one entirely separate campaign.

Its the sort of setting where people live in sprawling space stations by the millions, and you fly around little space station hubs with various habitats and factories floating around. Not so much big on landing on planets.

I really like the combat. It isn't blazing fast, it isn't super slow. There's shield and armor facings and various weapons and what have you. The boom is good.

Bonus points are awarded to the game for the autopilot function, which speeds the game up. You hit that button and zip along in whatever direction you were pointed, perhaps dropping out to examine wreckage or kill more hapless victims as the fancy strikes.

I used the Vanguard through most of the game and I have to say it is probably my favorite ship. I tried to go with a bigger ship, but when i would get swarmed by fighters I would go down in 5 seconds. I felt like when I was in a bigger ship I wasn't able to target the little ships as easily as before, has anyone else noticed this?

I ended my game with a Sorcerer armed with beam broadsides, pulse turrets, and all the projectile turret upgrades (extender, optimizer, accelerator). It melts dreadnaughts from double the range of an all particle beam loadout while still giving me the ability to pew pew with the broadsides. <3

I think the one time an escort mission didn't drive me up the wall, was actually Resident Evil 4. Mainly because you could tell Ashley to hide in a bin and by goodness she'd stay there safe and un-killed while I dealt with the problem.
