hey dogs, you like the AV Club?

a lot of dudes from the AV Club just started this

1c576fc0.png

it looks preeettttty neat and people like Rian Johnson (of Looper fame) have been talking it up

I haven't read in depth yet but I'll be doing that today

but I also still hang out at

1266956967-medium_av_club_logo.jpg

for their TV reviews and their excellent newswire and even sometimes their book reviews

occasionally I go to Badass Digest for Film Crit Hulk's stuff

and of course, you guys keep me up to date on lots of stuff too

so where do you get your entertainment and pop culture news from? you got opinions about who's good and who's bad? isn't Devin Faraci just the woooorrrsssttt

talk to me, doggies!

I feel like I would like Film Crit Hulk more if it wasn't written that way

I get that it's a thing and the guy does make good points

but goddamn that is an obnoxious way to make your points

AV club is great, I also like vulture but for what it's worth Grantland blows both of them out of the water.

i will say this about the AV club, the guy who does their newswire updates is hilarious.

    I like grantland

I think the av club disagrees with me often enough that I no longer read them

I like Believer Magazine for reviews because I'm a goddamn elitist I guess??

I love the grantland entertainment section because they cover lots of stuff I love. Their tv coverage is aces, from GoT to new show write-ups (the bridge write up today has me super-pumped for that show, they cover the MTV challenge, which I love, and their music stuff is some excellent, lengthy reads, even though I may disagree at times. Also I like reading Wesley Morris's movie takes

it just seems so pointless to me

I mean I guess it got the dude noticed, so that's cool, but damn

Remembering Devin from his CHUD days, the adage 'once a giant self-involved douche, always a giant self-involved douche' still applies.

Looking forward to seeing how The Dissolve goes, because right now for reviews all I really have is McWeeney and Sepinwall over at Hitfix.

I was unfamiliar with Grantland until this thread

I think I'll need to put it in the rotation

I like Todd VanDerWerff most of the time. He gets fucking weird sometimes in his reviews, though. Really, their TV coverage is mostly why I stick around, and a decent chunk of their newswire coverage.

This article is pretty close to brilliant: http://www.avclub.com/articles/enders-game-author-orson-scott-card-issues-plea-fo,99915/

Oh, and their Random Roles feature can be pretty excellent as well, especially when they get an actor that doesn't really give a shit about keeping up appearances. They had one with James Caan a few weeks back where there's a moment where you're pretty sure James Caan about ripped the interviewer's throat out.

Oh right, and the Dissolve seems like it's going to solve the main problem I had with the AV Club's film coverage, in that their reviews were so goddamned short that you couldn't glean much of what they thought at all because there just wasn't room. I'm not super pleased that their comment section seems to have made the jump from the AV Club, though. Man.

Weirdly, I always thought Film Crit Hulk was a woman. But yeah, it's annoying. You can put it into a translator online and email it to yourself though.

I like a surprising amount of the gimmick commenters on the AV Club. Some of which have moved over to The Dissolve:
