The end game is gonna be pretty intense. FFXIV does not cater to WoW players.

The game caters to WoW players incredibly heavily and I am having a hard time even parsing the implication of your second sentence since WoW has hands down the best PvE endgame. LFR for the people who don't want to have to schedule around a game and hard modes for the people who want a challenge, I would be very happy if 14 cribbed it entirely.

From what I've read, the end game of FFXIV most certainly doesn't cater to WoW players. To see the big bads and get the great gear, you're going to have to play well.

I meant that ever since the end of BC, WoW has severely dumbed down its end game for people whining that they don't get to see all the content if they're not skilled enough. WoW went completely off the rails when "epics" became as common as greens. I LOVED the hours and hours I had to put in to get that original dungeon .5 set. It made accomplishments and time invested actually worthwhile.

I can't stand LFR. It trivializes the accomplishments of players with actual skill. If I'm good enough to down a raid where mechanics actually come into play, I'd rather not look exactly the same in armor/weapons than some kid who just mashed 2 buttons for a couple hours to get the same reward in a slightly different color and a few iLvLs lower.

WoW (with the exception of heroic difficulties) is becoming a very, very casual game. I mean hell, they're gonna put in a cash shop pretty soon.

But this is derailing the thread. To each their own about how they like the game to play out. I just hope FFXIV doesn't go the way of WoW, and from what I've read from the designers, it won't.

Oh, and aren't there at least 4 gear tiers at launch? White, Crafted, Dungeon (Aetherite), and Unique?

I'm very close to picking this up. I have room for an MMO in my life, and I really enjoy the visuals and found the basic gameplay to be fun when I tried out the beta. Can you guys sell me on some parts of the game that I haven't figured out on my own yet?

What's the deal with gear in this game? I actually enjoy a good loot treadmill, even though that's a big turn off for a lot of people. I prefer WoW's handling of gear over Guild Wars 2's, for example. I want to see a piece of loot that will make my character more powerful and have to work towards getting it. Gives me something to do.

How about customizing appearances? Is there a mechanic for wearing a set of gear for the stats but using the visuals of something else? An appearnace tab or a transmogrification system in WoW terms.

How about stuff to do at max level. Raiding? High level dungeons? I saw that there's a group finder for dungeons, which is a huge plus for me; I have been really annoyed at recent modern MMOs refusing to include one at launch for some reason.

Are there talents or anything you do to "build" your character other than leveling up and pumping points into strength?

What's up with Jobs vs Classes. The official website looks like your class just kinda upgrades into one of the jobs listed. Are there more choices than they've listed?

That's all I can think of right now. This thing has been in my cart over at Green Man Gaming a couple times, and I am ready to be pushed over the edge into purchasing territory.

Shit, it’s hard to know what to say. There’s a lot I find cool about the game that may or may not answer your questions…

On gear, from what I saw in the low level dungeons, there are some nice non-tradable unique pieces that you can only have one copy of that drop. I got a piece of level 15 gear in a dungeon that was better than a piece of level 20 gear I had gotten from a quest. I’m assuming it will be like that throughout the game, and it’s nice that people have a reason to redo dungeons.

There’s also the materia system, which from what I can see works as a gear customization and gear sink system at the same time. Every piece of gear has a “spiritbond” level that goes from 0 to 100 every time you wear it while fighting/crafting/gathering. Once it’s at 100%, you can turn it into materia (once you’ve done the story quest that gives you that ability) which can then be inserted into gear with materia slots.

For customization, there are just dyes at the moment. I played with that a bit and it was nice to have the option of making my guy look like less of a hobo with the low level gear. At the moment I don’t think it’s all that detailed, but who knows?

High level stuff? No idea. I don’t think they’ve said anything beyond “we will have some high level stuff to do”. There was mention of a tower, or some such, for high level raiding I think.

In terms or building your dude, you can level every job on your one guy and then use abilities from other jobs that you’ve leveled in a different job by slotting them into additional abilities. For example, I could level Lancer to 4, get Keen Flurry which gives me parry+ and then use that when I’m tanking as a Gladiator as an additional ability. Or level Conjurer to when I get protect and … well you get the idea.

You also get bonus points to distribute yourself every few levels, but that looks to be a “pump it into this stat” thing like you mentioned.

As for jobs vs. classes, your understanding is pretty much correct from what I understand for what we’ll have at launch. I’m sure they’ll be adding more jobs eventually because, come on, we don’t even have Thief, Red Mage, Samurai, Ninja, ect.

I think I read somewhere that some high level jobs may require you to have two classes leveled to a certain point, but nothing’s been confirmed.

That’s all I’ve gleaned from my time in the beta, I’m sure someone else can fill in anything I’ve missed. But there’s so much other shit that looks cool like the companions, buying a house, buying a freaking airship and so on.

But as a new player without any previous account or anything, I get the standard MMO free month with purchase? I am assuming this is the case! That said, thanks for answering my inquiries about all those game mechanics everybody who replied. You all chipped in useful information, and I really like what I heard. Gonna jump on this 20% coupon at Green Man Gaming and feel confident that I'm going to at least get $24 of enjoyment out of this. Probably more.

Thanks guys, see you in ... Eorzea? Is that a thing? Whatever, I'm in.

A: The Crystal Tower is an alliance raid. It’s content that is taken on by an alliance of three parties, for a total of 24 players.
Actually, for that matter, here's the whole answer to that Q&A question, since it has a lot of info on this stuff:
A: The Crystal Tower is an alliance raid. It’s content that is taken on by an alliance of three parties, for a total of 24 players.
The Great Labyrinth of Bahamut and the Crystal Tower are similar in that neither of these raids will be completed in one visit. We will continue to add floors over the span of about a year and a half.
The Crystal Tower is, as I’m sure everyone knows, the last dungeon in FFIII. So as the floors increase, you can all ultimately expect something like the Cloud of Darkness to make an appearance.
It’s difficult to explain the Great Labyrinth of Bahamut without saying spoilers. Well, just as everyone saw at the beginning of the stream in the video, Dalamud actually contained Bahamut. So you might ask, “Why was Bahamut inside?” And I believe you all saw that a key-like object fall out of Dalamud and that’s a large part of Bahamut’s containment. It scattered all over Eorzea and is an important clue for the dungeon. You can take on the Great Labyrinth from various locations…
Well, if I say anymore it would weaken the impact for when everyone first enters the dungeon.
Events will develop on a grand scale, and there will be a huge number of bosses for each “episode” of the raid. So, it’s going to be hard if you don’t dish out enough damage.
It’ll probably take more than 10 or 20 wipes to really figure out.

This is very interesting, especially the bits about the labyrinth

Both dungeons don't seem to be standard "raids" like the other instances are. They seem like they have unique mechanics and will continue to be updated for over a year adding supposedly a "huge" number of bosses with each episode.

Also the labyrinth is accessed in multiple ways in different locations across the world, probably related to the spikes that came out of dalamud.

Also there will apparently be very hard light party and quests content, so thats good!

Wow. That is incredibly busy. I'd suggest getting rid of the hit counter, shoutbox, and Group Pay box. Also, I don't think you need notifications on the front main page everytime something happens.

I didn't play a whole lot of FFXI back in its prime, why did everyone seem to hate the coolest possible class? (Dragoon)

FFXI was developed back in a tine where group composition was really, REALLY important.

It was the difference between a smooth with a nice constant stream of exp, or every fight being PAIN.

    *snip*
I will comment that to me this reads as more of a higher level evaluation. If you're a low/mid-level, MNK really wasn't that well regarded, because everyone on their mother leveled on Crabs and Pugils, both super high defense mobs that gave multiple/weak hitters (ie MNK) more trouble.

Also that a lot of the torments of DRG got hammered out after populations started to diminish, when I leveled MNK I didn't have much trouble due to there being plenty of folks piling through all the 1-25ish spots. But you're right, assuming you didn't screw up DRG didn't have a lot of trouble in the early levels. It was after Crawlers Nest that DRG became a real disaster. Not only did we suffer from all the troubles that Transporter listed, we hit the problem the MNK had with Crabs; Our weapons damage type sucked, and our skill chains sucked. Better have your two snipers rings ready at 40! At least my fingers felt fancy.

I got my god damn purple armor. That's all that matters.

Edit; Also every DRG has had way too long to sit and think about what was wrong with DRG and why they refuse to level something else. Every DRG has these exact rants contained in his or her soul.
Edit 2; Wait a second.. Did you say... Everyone on their mother? I'm intrigued.
