I have waited forever for more Sand, it was my favourite of the 3 they put forward (along with Lookouts and Blood and Oil). I think Jerry has a talent for writing in a Western style.

Very interesting, would like to know more. The fellas always worry that we'll be annoyed when they test out other ideas besides PA, but the stuff they come up with is always so damn good.

Wooo Sand! Excited for the return. Gotta say though the noses are bothering me on this more serious work, my eyes are just drawn to em. Small nitpick though, in an other wise excellent comic.
I'd never have imagined that Mike had the art in him that he's been producing for the last year or so. I think it's a pretty incredible story and a lesson for anyone judging art school applications, but if you had shown me the work he did when he was 21, I wouldn't have thought that he could do different moods, color compositions, character designs and dynamic work (angles, motion) so well one day.
And then there's the Trench noses. And, my pet peeve, the texture overlay. It's the cop out of the digital age, and I'd like it to stop (worst offender: big splotch on guy's cheek in Panel 4). Other than that, I could really see a graphic novel by Krahulik and Holkins for something. If they didn't average 1.5 pages a year because of reasons...
It does sometimes seem like the two of them would be awesome at just moving over completely from the web comic format to full graphic novels.
This piece is awesome, and it makes you want more so badly. I also really, really wish we could get more from Automata. That may still be my favorite stuff PA has done.
What is this I don't even.

The thing about trench nose is that it has the same effect as gluing dots of red foam to each character's face, or giving everyone googly eyes. In a comedy piece it's tolerable. In something like this its irksome.
Good comic otherwise.

This is the second part in a western sci-fi story called Sand, which Mike and Jerry offered the first installment of a couple of years ago (the link was posted earlier in the thread) as one of three possible projects they were considering doing. They polled readers on which one they should pursue first. The other two were The New Kid and Queen of Bells. Sand was, I believe, the community choice, and so this is them continuing the story.
This was the second time they solicited reader input on concept projects like this; the first time around, the "prototype" strips were Lookouts, Automata and Jim Darkmagic. Automata won the vote and they did the Blood and Oil series of strips based on the concept, although obviously they've done a lot with Lookouts too.

I never even notice the noses until I come into these threads and people bitch about them all the time.

the thing about the "trench nose" phenomenon, is that when I decided to stop caring about it, I soon after stopped noticing it. At least until someone mentions it.
They aren't going away, may as well get used to them.

I'm the same way. I don't notice them until they are mentioned, but once I see them I really can't focus on anything else. I look at the first SAND strip and wonder what was wrong with those noses? They look like perfectly fine noses and that just makes it worse for me.

I really dig the expression in the second panel, that's top notch.
Mike's linework is top notch but man oh man do I miss the color scheme used in part one. Unnecessary bloom filter is doing this comic exactly zero favors.
A few well chosen colors in a coherent scheme > nonsensical overlays.

In this context, I just imagine the reddish noses are a result of rampant, Old West alcoholism.
I think it's the color composition on the noses that bothers me the most. Your eyes are drawn to them when you don't want them to be. The shape is fine.
Also, no evidenced alcohol or lush in sight, so yeahhhhhh.

Incorrect.
That is, indeed, Wolverine.

out of all the "trench nose" complaints, I think this is my favourite. Because that, that is an opinion.
and holy shit, is is it a goddamn doozy of one.
When I read it, I conjure the sound of sand blowing across wood planks, like on a porch.
