Video subtitling software? (Preferably free)

Hey all, editing the opening to Ougon Musou Kyoku for a fan translation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=479LCEfemb0

I normally use AegiSub, and I have the timing down as well as the lyrics(romanized & translated). but it doesn't seem to let me save the edited final product, just a subtitle file.

Once I have that, I think I can just replace the video file and be(pardon the pun) golden.

Any recommendations for accomplishing this? I'd rather not buy the software since this is a one and done project, but if that's all there is, so be it.

From googling the term "hardsub", it seems like Virtualdub can probably do this? And Virtualdub is free.

Edit: Heck, here is one of the tutorial links that came up.

Certainly looks doable. Hopefully I can carry over my work from AegiSub to that. (You'd think it would allow hard subs...)
    Thanks!
