So I finally kicked my habit of WoW. (Well in fact my guild leader / good friend left to go play for the best horde guild in the game and I just don't feel the drive to do it anymore.) I was wondering if you guys could suggest a 'next' game for me. I am looking for something with a communities of great players that are competitive and not 12 year olds. I got into WoW because a group of old school tribes players was moving on to try WoW. Is there anything out there right now? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest joining a vaudeville troop.

Or specifying something other than "has a good community."

I hear this thing called real life has pretty good communities. I don't know how much the subscription fee is, though. I always just assumed I couldn't afford it.

TBH, I don't think there is one. The curse of online gaming is ironically the gamers themselves. Me, I'm hoping the Warhammer MMOG will be good, but I'm certain it will be fucked up one way or the other. Either by the devs or by the community.

The only solution appears to be "play with your friends only".

As always the idea of having a life is nice, but I like playing video games from time to time with a group of good individuals. Perhaps if you were able to enjoy a gaming community that I had the privileged to play with you might better understand where I was coming from.

By a good communities I mean players that like to play the game and are 1/2 way decent at it. Hopefully a team environment but competitive. Not 12 year olds that spam the vent channel with their insentient wining.

Get Oblivion its a great way to break a WoW habit. Its a huge game with lots to do. The best part about it is that it lacks a community. You get to be the star of the show.

Then when your not playing that go outside. Also, make some real friends. No matter how great an online "community" is it still pales in comparison to having actual friends.

So, you want a community where there are no people new to the game, and nobody below the age 20 or so.

    Have you considered Progress Quest?

    Especially because they're trolling.

The OP asked for a "next game for me" suggestion, not wisecracking advice that he get a real life. You're all over the line on this one. Don't do it again.

EDIT: Aroduc, give me a fucking break. I know that you know you're being a troll in this thread; don't you have anything more productive to do?

I did the oblivion thing for a while. I never beat the game but the leveling system annoyed me to no end. I didn't like that fact that as I leveled up so did the bear in the middle of some damn road. I wanted to be able to walk over and punch it in the face and be able to win. Do you perhaps know a mod that could do this? I heard mention of something before I stopped playing but never got the name of it.

Maybe something like Planetside would be cool to do for a while.
I never liked it much, but my friend swears by it.
It'd be interesting to play right after wow because of the very different play style.

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is one mod that changes the way enemies level up along with you. Each enemy type has a certain level cap; so a rat will never be able to challenge you beyond level 1, etc. Some of the wild animals are more dangerous in OOO than in the base game (bears will fuck you up at low levels, for example) but once you're stronger than they are, you will always be stronger than they are.

No, but people can be 1/2 decient at the game because you measure that standard vs how good the majority of people playing the game at the moment are. I know people get better and improve, but in general you can normally spot a game that has a player base that actually has some skill at video games.

And no people under 20 can play in a smart manner as can a 45 year old act like a complete fool.

If you're looking for an MMO with skilled, mature players, you should listen to Gihgehls and give EVE Online a try. It's a brutally unforgiving game where any and all PVP is allowed, so that tends to weed out any immature players. I don't even play it, but if I was going to get into an MMO, it would be EVE for this very reason. There's also a ton of PA forumers who play the game, which is a big bonus.

If you want another WoW-like MMO, City of Heroes/Villains seems to be okay as far as player maturity too, especially if you stick with the PA forumers who play it.

Seriously, EVE Online. There is a very large corporation (guild) full of penny-arcade forumers. They are very helpful and generous. Its like playing only with your friends, except there are like 300 of them. Really the only way to play Eve is with a group, and the bigger the group, the more crazy shit you will see. There is a free 14 day trial, no CC required.

Maybe this isn't quite what you're looking for, but I could never beat the community feel of Acrophobia. Is that game even around anymore? Wiki says there's a few versions but I have no idea if any of them are the same one I used to play.

I think you could find what you are looking for in any game, really. You just need to search for that good guild. I heard FFXI is better now with the latest update and EVE Online is hardcore awesome with the PA Crew. Well, actually any game is awesome with the PA Crew - so I suggest picking up City of Heroes / Villains or EVE and just play with PAers.

If the version you used to play was the same one I used to play--the graphical version hosted by, I think it was, Berzerk games--then I agree with you. But sadly, it's no longer around.

I think there's a version of the game with a very similar interface hosted by a different company, but it's gimped--no six or seven letter acros, and the community just isn't the same. Although it's been so long since I've played even that version that it might not be around anymore either.

Honestly, just check out some single-player games. I know you mentioned online, but there are some really great experiences with SP games that you miss out on when you focus on MMO games. If you have PS2, there's .hack//G.U., which is an RPG set in an MMO (and it does it fairly well, lots of content), plus a huge multitude of other games. STALKER is the new, cool kid on the block in PC gaming, so there's always that. Just get back into doing some regular gaming, as you'll find there's a very large number of choices and experiences for you instead of dedicating yourself to just one game.

I dunno. Its sort of like "the patch" for online games. You can play short hectic battles, with no permanent stats or character building to worry about. Go in, kill, exit. Probably not what youre looking for, but you could try right?

Thanks I appreciate it. I might give EVE a try, sounds like a fun time. (I used to play on a PVP server and I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to play on one.)

As for the single person games, I have enough stored away to play for a while but I like playing games with other people because it changes the entire dynamic of things. Nothing is ever the same for long.

You're probably looking for another MMO where in-game accomplishments mean something. The truth of it?

    They don't.

My suggestion, which comes from personal experience of finally kicking the MMO habit after a good 7 years of constant gaming, isn't an easy one, but probably the best if you want to "move on" to something better.

    Quit gaming. Period. Cold turkey.

It sounds harsh, but really, it works. I didn't do this to a pure extent where I gave up ALL games, just anything on my PC. I bought a ps2, and enjoyed storylines, which made me want to read some good books (all of which were suggested on these forums) and get out some more. It worked.

All I can say is, quitting WoW to start an account in like BF2 or some other goal-oriented game will not do you any good. Stay away from anything that has multi-player accomplishments, they're not worth the time. Because in the end, that's all you really have. Time. Your most valuable commodity, and that's what you pay with when you play mmo's.

I didn't mean to rant, but feh. It's how I justified quitting the PC-gaming genre.

    amen.

i was real gung-ho into WoW.. then EvE. then one day it hit me and I got rid of everything except Steam.

a few hours of Dystopia a week keeps the madmen at bay... its teambased, there's cybor lazorz, and the PA server is comedy.

mmo's are crazy. some people have time for the insanity, some don't... all we have in the end is time.

The best online community I have ever played with is Gemstone, which is essentially a pay per month MUD. You're essentially forced to stay in character, and it's a super fun online experience because of it.
