so I won't really go into details lest I get in trouble

but I work for a company that manages a certain service that retailers sell

the mother of someone who worked at the retailer called me up and bitched at me for the service not doing something, and then the person who worked at the retailer told me on a recorded phone call that she thinks our service is garbage and she tells everyone at her store not to sell them because she thinks they're terrible

I passed this phone call onto someone higher than me

and I just found out the person who worked at the retailer got fired because of me passing on the phone call

my question: should I feel like a dick because of this?

alternatively, tell me about stories of you getting people fired

or if you really want to bring the room down, stories of people getting you fired

I'd say the person refusing to do part of their job and then bragging about it on a recorded phone call got them fired.

    I could be wrong though.

or if there was any chance of your recorded calls being reviewed "for quality assurance purposes" like I always get reminded might happen whenever I call somewhere for service

That doesn't seem like your fault.

I've never been fired, but I have been laid off twice now. By the same company.

Her attitude towards your product was resulting in lost revenue for both the company she works at, as well as your company. Not just directly from the people she discouraged from your purchasing the product.. but also from those people who talk to the people she discouraged from purchasing the product ("No no, don't buy X, I heard from someone that actually sells it that it's awful")

    Yep, that's how that works.

People get fired for badmouthing their own company to their friends on their personal, "private" facebook and twitter accounts.

    Not your fault, yo.

I've never been fired, I've never gotten anyone fired

I have two people being fired stories though.

the more recent one involves an acquaintance from high school, we've got some friends in common but have never really been close. She got a job at the firm I work for, and was super excited about it

Within her first two weeks we got a request from HR to monitor her web usage, a week or two after that she was gone

I've avoided her when I see her on the bus/at the mall since, as shit is awkward as all hell.

the other story was when I was a teenager, working as a cashier at Zellers (like Target but cheaper and Canadian). There was another cashier there, that like the subject of the above story, was a friend of some of my friends. Actually I think they were/are friends with each other. She was with little doubt the least smart person I've ever worked with. She miscounted cash regularly, actually gave away money at one point and never quite understood why what she did was wrong when someone tried to explain, she made children cry. I remember seeing our Manager in tears over firing her. Apparently she had no problem firing people for stealing, missing shifts, that sort of thing, but she'd never before had to explain to someone that they were too incompetent to be a cashier at a department store.

Nah man, gotta take care of yourself first. You can bet that the person on the other end wouldn't have thought twice about getting you fired. Plus like everyone else has said it's kind of like...what was she expecting, glowing praise?

My wife was working with a contractor who sent out vaguely insulting emails, overstepping his authority, and wanted money to redo his (bad) work after he already submitted it for completion. From what I hear it was a spectacular case of digging one's own grave.

My wife was also let go from a temp position because they were working strict shifts. The person who was there before her reported her being late, even though she wasn't. Another time when she was sick to the point where she couldn't drive, she attempted to call her supervisor, whose phone went straight to voice mail, and then she was told that she should call next time. And then there was no next time! :?

It's cool though, she now has a better job where she doesn't get thrown under the bus etc.

I've been fired from two different jobs.

Both of my managers told me I was the nicest/least troublesome fire they ever had.

In both instances I was either management or aspiring, so I completely understood where they were coming from.

And frankly, in both cases, not only was it at least fairly justified, but I needed to leave.

Also...isn't this sort of just another job thread?

Someone had a small adhoc SQL request about a specific type of gift code that agents can use to get people free subscriptions.

    It took about 5 minutes.

I found out later it got something like 40 people fired.

    Nothing. Matters.

Probably queried a count of total code usages aggregated by agent logon

Which then probably found around 40 people egregiously throwing that code around to friends and family.

I tried to get someone fired once

his computer was messed up, it was taking him something like 30 minutes to log in, and in the process of troubleshooting it turned out that parts of his roaming profile, particularly the internet cache parts, were fucking massive. I took a closer look, and found that it was split fairly evenly between java games and softcore porn. This guy apparently doesn't have a home computer, so I guess he stays late to surf the web a bit before he goes home? I don't know, he's a weird dude and it's been like that since before I started. Either way, I fixed the problem and mentioned what I found to my supervisor, who passed it along to HR.

Fast forward a couple years, he's still working here, he's having another problem, and someone else on helpdesk finds that he's up to his old tricks. Our boss is told, she tells HR, same deal. A few weeks later we get a request from HR... to see if we can filter his web traffic to basically put parental controls on his computer. As far as my boss was able to tell, he wasn't fired the first time because we don't actually have an acceptable use policy that says he can't surf porn on work computers, and he wasn't fired the second time because ????

either way he's still there, still creepy, and we didn't filter his internet because that is dumb and we don't really have anything in place that would do the job properly anyways. I look forward to catching him a third time.

I've had a few clients try to get me fired when I didn't hand the store and it's inventory over to them at the last minute.
There are some foolish folk out there.
The important thing, is that it sounds like you just reported a problem for the company.
It doesn't sound like you sought out the specific solution of firing the rude person.

I've had two complaints, both invalid by manager's admission, in the past 6 years. I'm happy with that record.

On the other hand, my new workplace (same company) has a much laxer management system. So the cost we pay for being able to relax more is when an asshole co-worker gets two complaints in a single morning, and has easily racked up dozens in any one season, my manager's response is "Hey <X>, gotten some bad feedback this morning. Is everything ok?"

I used to work late night phone support so I had dick all to do past about 11 pm and would browse the internet and didn't feel like anything bad would happen(if no one calls I can't do anything so), but at another time I was doing data entry and I tried not doing it for like a month when nothing came down the pipe but eventually there's only so much you can spend sitting around. I wonder if they ever made a mark against me for it.

I kinda tangentially got someone fired once, but not really. Basically we worked together in a call centre and had split up two weeks earlier. Then she decided it would be a good idea to come around to my house and punch me in the head. That was fun. Following that she put all sorts of complaints in about me, something along the lines of me being an occupational health and safety risk for her or something. [This is all second hand info from a drunk team lead at a party after the events]. All the while I was just getting along ignoring her and doing my job. Eventually they got sick of it and found an excuse to fire her.. she'd been there for years and should have been one of their best CSRs (not sure about her stats, but she seemed to be good at her job before all that) but yea. I quit about a month later anyway, a year is long enough to be in an ISP's call centre. Fun!

I was fired for browsing the internet. Totally justified. Funny thing is, the final straw was not because I got caught surfing, but because I had created an HTML document (using my high-school 'mad skillzz') to help me get to particular files quickly. The supervisor thought it was a website.

I work midnights in a coffee shop, usually as part of a trio (2 of us work each night). For many months, we were trying to find someone to replace our third member, who had left, but no one 'meshed' well enough.

    Then we got "Sarah"

Sarah, who originally was from the afternoon shift, was slow. Slow at cleaning, slow at serving customers, slow at making sandwiches, slow at everything. And she had been working at our store for a few months, so being new didn't count as an excuse at this point. Management thought midnights would be a better fit for her, since we were slower paced.

Nope, this chick couldn't do anything right. And anytime I turned my head, she would start folding napkins (our last resort, 'we have nothing to do' job) No matter if the place was a mess, coffee needed brewing, or fridges were empty. I'd tell her (or nag her) to do it, and as soon as I'd left....back to napkins she went.

She was such a nice girl, so our Manager really hated when she had to fire her. In my 6 years of working there, she's the only one who got fired for just being incompetent. All the others either stole, were rude to customers, or were late/absent too much.

Hmmm... never been fired, but there was a (very short) gig I had as a receptionist. Had a good month there, and then the lady who owned the business strolled in and tried to get me to sign a new contract for $2 less per hour.

Yeah... no. Quit on the spot, of course. I'm ashamed to say that I had to fight back some tears, because I felt so insulted.

Then there was the time when I was working at a restaurant and the restaurant closed without telling anyone! All the staff was out a month's worth of pay, ha

I worked a tedious, menial computer monkey job a few years ago (when the job market was super super bad) and figured out how to automate it

I would come in, run my scripts, drink coffee and do crosswords and make sure my scripts didn't crash

I would also look for a better job

Eventually I was found out, chewed out by my terrible boss and told to pack my things

Her job was to manage a team of people like me so I sent the scripts off to everyone else before leaving

I should have gotten fired once pretty early on in my career as IT guy at work.

Still very inexperienced, I found what was described as a script designed for our database that would help to clean up some of the tables in the database relating to sales documents.

Either I mis-typed something or mis-read it's intentions, but I accidentally deleted the open and history tables.

They got what they paid for (at the time anyway, I've gotten much better!)

    Thank god for good backups.

Oh, there's the time a moron should have been fired. He was given some limited training "do these exact steps to add this thing to the system"

He promptly "got lost" between the two or three windows he was using, and unintentionally set the pricing of every single inventory item to $357.00.

That was a fucking terror of an afternoon, but he also somehow didn't understand why I was so upset about it.

Oh also I worked for Nortel for about 6 years until it went completely bust

After I was let go I kept getting paychecks for months

I called HR about it, they told me to talk to payroll

I called payroll, they told me to talk to HR

This back and forth continued for a long time

Meanwhile I kept getting more money

Eventually one of the numbers they gave me was no longer working, I got in contact with a higher up who said

"Listen....Just keep it. This company has about 3 weeks left anyways."

    Thanks Nortel!!
