Games to play on a long flight trip

dragnodragno SydneyRegistered User new member
Hi there, I will be attending Pax Prime from Sydney, Australia.

I have read the recent post by Gabe, saw the stripe about them coming to Pax Oz. I was just wondering what are some games to take on a long flight trip?
Also I've listened to their DLC podcast about them discussing how Mike is going spend his time during the flight.
I have a laptop and DS might be getting a PSVita not sure yet.

Cheers

A vanilla DS? If you like RPGs or visual novels, I suggest a Phoenix Wright game or Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey(or Devil Survivor if you prefer grids over dungeons). Any of the three would last many hours.

from personal experience, usually (depending on when your flight actually leaves/arrives) I recommend actually trying to sleep, because what with all the timezone changes and things you'll be feeling the jetlag, although it always hits me harder when I jump forward in time rather than back.

That said I usually bring along pokemon, harvest moon, a few puzzle games and i have dwarf fortress on my laptop

I'd recommend a mix of genres, but here's a few ideas for DS:
Actiony game, go with Castlevania. Any of them will work, but Dawn of Sorrow was probably the best of them.
Get your fill of puzzle games with Picross.
RPG - Chrono Trigger is available, and is awesome of course. If you want something different, the Mario & Luigi games are fantastic.
Platformer - you could play Mario, and get Super Mario World for GBA or some such, but meh. MEH. Henry Hatsworth. Buy it now.

All international flights from Australia have an in flight entertainment system, so don't stress too much about filling literally every hour with your own entertainment. When my wife and I fly to europe yearly, its about 17 hours total air time across two flights, and by the time you watch a couple movies, a few tv shows, sleep for a few hours and play a bit of 3DS, you're nearly done.

    Oh. Oh!

Fire Emblem: Awakening. Your whole trip is covered.

    And then some.

Good lord, yeah. So much to do.

Either Zero Escape game (999 or Virtue's Last Reward) also take up a good deal of time. Hope you enjoy reading, though.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is also a fun time sink.

Which airline are you traveling on? I lived in Australia for a few years, and made a ton of flights back and forth from America. If you're with Qantas, oftentimes they have monitors installed in the backs of the seats that are filled with old games you can play -- the remote doubles as a controller if you turn it sideways. I once spent an entire flight from LAX to Sydney playing Tetris.

Like, I got really fucking good at Tetris.

If you get a Vita most of the Persona games are on sale on PSN now. Sale might have ended or be ending rather shortly though. I work night shift at a job with little to do most of the shift and this is what I've been playing portable wise:

    Persona 4 Golden (Vita)
Guacamelee (Vita, coming to PC this week so you can get for laptop if Vita not an option)
Rogue Legacy (PC, controller probably needed so might be too bulky for you)
Virtue's Last Reward (vita or 3ds)
    Shin Megami Tensei IV (3ds)
    Fire Emblem Awakening (3ds)
Murumasa (vita, however infrequent save points makes me hesitant to recommend outright)

I'd highly suggest games that let you save and switch frequently (most of the above list does).

Upcoming titles that seem suited/ I'm probably getting myself:

    Vita: Dragon's Crown
Laptop: Spelunky, Ducktales, Pixeljunk Monsters (also just released for Vita), Space Hulk
    3ds: Mario & Luigi

    Corpekata on

like I said above, all Australian airlines provide those screens with full entertainment on all international flights
