Donating used textbooks?

xraydogxraydog Registered User regular
I have about a dozen old textbooks from college that are at least 4 years old. Half of them are undergrad computer science related and the others are math/science. Don't think they're worth much, maybe a few dollars each.

I'd like to donate them. There are many websites that do this so I'm not sure which to use. Anybody have experience donating textbooks? I don't want them to be thrown out because that would be a huge waste.

You don't mention it on your post, but maybe you could take them to a local university library and see if you can donate them. I don't see why you couldn't if you have a university or college close by.

lots of universities have a used bookstore nearby that basically functions as a used textbook exchange, so you could take them there. Although if they're four years old there may not be a ton of use for them anymore.

What level math/science are we talking about? You might be able to find a new home for those ones at a local high school if a college won't take them.

When in doubt, most public libraries will take just about anything that's in usable condition. If they don't want it for their own collection, they often have fundraising sales to get rid of duplicate or out of date books, and cheap college textbooks are popular buys at those things for parents with high school age kids who don't believe in the distractions of joy.

Better World Books (http://www.betterworldbooks.com) will accept used book donations, and sends the proceeds to literacy programs in Africa and elsewhere. They have book donation sites in many cities, or you can send your books to them, I believe.

(Note: I am friends with several former employees of Better World Books.)
