    And they had to buy the vodka to dump. That'll sure show them.

    the swedish jumper who painted her nails like that as a little show of support has been convinced to stop doing so - the rules of the association are actually kind of strict on political expression during games.

    in return he was ostracised by the Australian media and Olympic authorities and was never sent to the Olympics again, despite running qualifying times for the 1972 games (the first modern Olympic games where no Australian sprinters participated)

    the vodka protests are, well, firstly, just seems pretty anti-russian in style, which is stupid and counter-productive. For one, how bout supporting the russian gays instead? And, y'know, americans being angry at them ain't gonna change their minds any, if you look at history. It's already thought of by many as a problem the "depraved west" has, that russia really doesn't, that it's imported and not how russians should be.

    secondly, you have the buy the vodka, people.

    thirdly, and this is the part that shakes me to my very core;

    you can't just fucking dump vodka

    IT IS JUST NOT DONE

    What's sad is that the Soviet Union was very progressive initially on these sorts of issues.

    I wonder what would have happened in Russia if Stalin hadn't tied homosexuality to fascism.

    Russia has never been great with homosexuals

    comes with being a very relgious country

    It was decriminalized under Lenin, which put them 40 years ahead of the United States.

    being better than the US does not make them progressive

    Alright, but it still made them better than most countries in the world except for France, Turkey, Mexico, and good portions of central and south America. Under Lenin, the Soviets were pretty damn progressive on this front. But then he died and Stalin was a dick.

    lots of things died with lenin not just progressivism

    real comunisim died with him

    I listened to a gay figure skater on NPR basically beg people to stop trying to boycott the games because he'd trained his whole life for the olympics, hundreds of other athletes both gay and straight had done likewise, and fuck Russia he wanted to win gold for the USA.

    everyone should change their flags to the first couple of GIS results for "gay sex" for the duration of the games to troll russia
