[PATV] Monday, August 26, 2013 - CheckPoint Season 3, Ep. 11: Plants vs. Productivity
Err... I'm from the UK and I purchased a copy of Saint's Row VI from my local supermarket on the 23rd with no problem. Are you sure about your facts there?
"England figure it out"? Ouch. I have a feeling Graham is gonna get flamed for this one.
I'm pretty sure it's not "England"s fault, it's either the publisher (Deep Silver) or Valve who has wrangled that one.
Also:
England is a part of the UK, yes, but England != UK.
UK is a part of EU, yes, but UK != EU.
Not having a physical release in England != Not having a physical release in EU, but historically the whole of EU (including the UK) have had the same release dates, and I have a feeling that's the issue.
When someone pens a deal for an "EU release date", it likely covers the entire EU. So as more and more games go digital we are likely to find that if just one country in the EU is getting a physical release, the entire EU release will be held back. And even if that's not the case, they'll still likely try to get all the different platform releases out at the same time, so as long as XBOX/PS/Wii has a physical release, the digital one for PC will be delayed.
So yay that. Or something.
TLDR; This issue is not going away any time soon, and we'll see a lot more of it.
@Swissmatt He didn't specify it well but I think he's only talking about a PC release. You likely bought it for a console, yes?

Obviously I'm not criticizing England itself, come on now :P
A bunch of stuff differentiating England from the EU
Which we understand.
What we said was "Europe", not the EU. England is still part of Europe (much as I'm sure you'd like to pretend not to be sometimes).
Anyway, I hope we help to raise notice of this issue for those outside the borders of Europe. Because it's insane.
As someone who works in a Game(it's basically a UK gamestop) in england I can say there was never any plan for there not to be a physical release, even the tiny indy store near where i work for has it.
Don't go believing every rumor you hear in the internet
@GrahamS Hey, I didn't say I'd flame you - just that you were likely to be ;]
England (as a part of the UK) is both a part of the EU (European Union) and Europe (the continent), so we can add even more silliness there.
The term "EU" is often used to describe the launch region of Europe though, and the UK is a part of that as you say. Since they are rarely seperated for game launch purposes, I guess I was just confused as to which you actually meant were not getting it; UK or the whole of Europe.
Btw. I am not English, I'm Danish. Just trying to clear it up a bit.
In any case I am quite happy you brought it up, because it is indeed silly! I just doubt we'll see any changes to it "because paper work" -_-
@Kakou%20Onkei I think the problem is that the LRR crew forgot to mention that the story is about the PC release of the game. As far as I know, the console versions were always coming to the UK in physical form, but not the PC version. Am I mistaken?
@Graham - Seriously, it's ok to say England is terrible. The only people proud of our formerly great nation are not the sort of people who's opinions you should care about. There is no positive side to being British and it's been that way for well over a decade now; they're even trying to make it hard to get internet porn. England - Where depression is covered in rain but at least you can get pancakes at McDonalds now.
England has SOME broadcast television that isn't absolutely, embarrassingly awful, unlike the US. And most good music comes from there. Also I love rain.
Re: SR IV. Isn't the case simply that they wanted the PC version to be available the same day as the Consoles versions, but in this case the PC version was download only?
Maybe a bit short sighted, but hardly nefarious. "Forcing" people to wait a few days for a game is nothing compared to the price gouging some of these countries are subject too.
Apologies to anyone here who's a MineCraft/Notch fanboy but FFS....the guy decided to pull the plug on his game b/c people were anticipating it and it was getting attention. That's probably one of the most pretentious things I've heard from the video game world. That pretty much perpetuates the whole "indie"/"hipster" stereotype.
"Ah...dude-man my game's now mainstream, this SUCKS...it's played out man, time to move on...."
@VOP I think it's worth reading his own post about it, rather than just the five words the LRR crew chose to say about it. It's not because it was popular and thus uninteresting. It's because there's too much pressure for him to deliver. He's not used to that, and just likes being able to play around with ideas and having it be "ok" to come up with crazy ideas and fail. The expectations became a pressure that zapped the enjoyment out of development. Doesn't really have anything to do with hipster vs. popularity.
@Necrox I'm actually aware of what Notch said about the game (wasn't just pulling the info from this episode), and to me it honestly sounds like what I said below. Sure, maybe he did feel pressured but that's hardly a reason for a single person to cancel a team project (even if the team is only like 12 people).
Either way, pretentious hipster or not, it's pretty pathetic to throw it all away b/c you don't like being paid attention to and having fans.
@VOP I'm pretty sure the project was his alone. He talked about bringing on one other developer, but I'm not sure it ever happened. As far as I know he's stopping his own project, not a team project. Earlier this year he'd said that if anyone within Mojang was interested enough to carry on, he'd pass the project on to them but it seems no one was. The rest of Mojang was working on other projects.
You're of course entitled to your oppinion - just trying to clear up the basis you form it on.

(if you did and I somehow didn't notice, I'm sorry)
**Don't know what those are? Google them. You will not regret it.**
Another great episode !

If you're actually interested you can read his own words here http://notch.tumblr.com/

BTW: does this make up for watching LRR content for like 5 years and never buying DVDs, T-Shirts or other murch? I mean it it was like $10.
