I meant to add this earlier, the box I got was the Plano 3952 (I had to look up the number). I found it online for like 14, so after shipping it was around 24.

HAHAHA on amazon all of the "people who bought this also bought" suggestions are Xwing miniatures.

Oh MAN this game is fun! I got the starter for Christmas and had a friend over to learn it with me last night. Now- I must expand- quickly. I can't wait to build squads. I have some rules questions concerning the upgrades- is there a site like M:TG has that expounds on the rules?
    - (IF not- I will ask: determination and the R2 that increases agility: are those persistent or thrown away after 1 use? Does determination mean that the critical hits do no damage?)
    - Please excuse the lack of google-fu on this, but there's SO much star wars/x-wing results I gave up on that.

If a card is a one-use card, it will say as much on the card. Proton Missiles and Adrenaline Rush are two examples - they say you discard the card after using them.

I just bought 5 starter kits at Target for 12 each! I will give 1 or 2 away and beef up my stock with the rest. Thanks for the tip!

DarkPrimus got your other question, but on Determination: It means that Pilot critical hits do no damage, and you toss the card.

Here's the latest errata from Fantasy Flight, but surely there are plenty of people willing to talk rules in here.

Thank you. 8 pages of errata just makes me more excited for this game. When introducing new players- check out this video by Fantasy Flight, it's probably old news for all of you- but it really helped us get started quicker (we started playing about 30 minutes in and then our first turn took about 15- then we were rolling).

R2-F2 is the droid that adds to your agility. The action to activate him lasts until the end of the round. You can use him again during the next round if you decide to use it as your action. The droid will stay there unless you take some sort of critical hit that would wipe him out.

Determination also doesn't go away, unless it's somehow taken out by a critical hit. (Remember that most ships will probably only get to use it 3 or so times before the ship is destroyed). Also, it only works on damage cards with the Pilot trait.

Enjoy the game! I just got back from a night of X-Wing and Star Wars LCG. Bliss!

Will the Falcon or the Shuttle fit in this Plano container

I have a bunch of them but I use them for my 40k stuff since they fit the figures and some of the larger ones like dreadnaughts but not rhinos or predators

Yeah - it looks like the dividers aren't adjustable, which means that the Falcon would have to stand on its edge, and the case is only 3" deep, so the Falcon won't fit that way, either.

I just bought a $15 husky tool box from Home Depot - more than enough room to carry a lot of ships (keeping them in the plastic shells they came in - when I get a foam tray they'll compact nicely) all the accessories, and will have room for the big ships when those are released. Also, lets me fits other stuff in too (last game had a couple foam trays of warhammer models along for later gaming). Still had room for a little plano case to keep all the chits in.

You apprently, did the same as I did (forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/comment/28329075/#Comment_28329075).

You won't regret it. It's nice and so far, I have not run out of space. If I need more, I could possibly trim the shell that comes with each ships to win some more space. So far, that husky toolbox has been the best.

That does look nice. I'm using a Plano box, and while it holds all the ships (with some creative maneuvering), there's no place truly big enough for all the pilot cards and it's starting to show.

With my toolbox, I should have no problem putting the tentative and rebel transport in. I *may* have to start trimming the shell the ship came into but that's all.

I tried to augment my "collection" (starter kits) even more with this auction but was beat in the last seconds when I wasn't willing to go over 200. By my best estimate this is probably....250? 300 to buy all of this? Aw well- I will rebuild the empire piece by piece if I have to...

I just completed my first 100pt game, (just got the Y-wing, TIE Advanced, X and Tie expansions today) and MAN: either I don't get the ion cannon or it's just underpowered. I don't know if 360 shooting is worth 1 possible damage and forcing a move. Maybe if the action was also taken but they get that. It was just frustrating.
Had a blast playing, but it took 5 hours (my friend and I are still looking up a lot of rules) My friend let me target lock on Dark Curse, attempt to re-roll my attack dice only to say, "nope- no re-rolling on Curse." Poor Wedge.

Ion Cannon is powerful in that it lets you know exactly where your opponent is going to be. Even if you discount the ability to drive them into an asteroid or off the map, it means you have one less ship to worry about, or one guaranteed target to attack.

Using it against Vader or something can really wreck an Imperial squad, because you're basically eliminating their most important unit with your least important one.

Ugh got my ass handed to me by a 3 bomber 3 tie list with backstabber, mauler mithral, and howl runner. It is really hard to do enough damage to take out that list. Also the guy was a total dick. He accused me of trying to spring "tournament rules in a friendly game" when I told him that if he hits another ship he loses his action. Yeah.

Um.. that's not tournament rules, that's the rules of the damned game. I betcha he was nudging and not being precise with his template placement, either.

Yeah the only in game rules that are in the tournament rule sheet is that initiative is determined randomly if there is a tie and all ships must use numbers. Everything else is either tournament structure rules or funnily enough the etiquette rules.

I was just scouring through the rulebook because I thought you were saying if you hit (i.e. accidentally knock a ship) you lose an action. Then I realized- you just mean touching bases!?! Ugh. Sorry you had to play with him.

Yeah, he overlapped and had to move back, and then tried to assign an action.

Thanks for the sympathy, it really left me in bad mood.

There were 17 players there and through bad timing I got to play him as my one and only game that night. The only reason I didn't make a big deal about it is that the dice would have had to go my way consistently in order to beat that list. And that was just not happening.

so I was able to get 2 core sets from Target for $12 each. With the money that i "saved" what should be my next purchases? An x-wing and tie fighter expansion for the additional pilots? I know eventually i'll probably be getting most things, but is there a "recommended" purchase path, besides buy the ships you like/might like playing?

On a related note, a snow day tomorrow might lead to playing the basic rules with my 7 year old, cause who doesn't like flying x-wings.

X-Wing and TIE Fighter are good choices for the extra pilots and cards and because they fit well in a lot of squads, but you've already got 2 X-Wings and 4 TIEs, so holding off on them wouldn't be crazy (buuuuuuuut they've been out-of-print for awhile and just came back into print, so maybe you should get one of each soon-ish).

The TIE Advanced is cool because of Darth Vader (though I guess the other pilots aren't that great) and because it adds a different option (slightly less maneuverable, way tougher to kill) to the Imperial side.

On the Rebel side, grabbing a Y-Wing or a B-Wing can get you some extra oomph and missiles (and some neat cards, besides). Y-Wings have turrets, B-Wings are all kinds of manueverable, both are equally hard to kill (8 HP) but the Y-Wing gets there via hull points while the B-Wing has more shields. Similarly, a TIE Bomber can really add some variety to the Imperial side.

The large ships - YT-1300 or Firespray - really bring a lot to the table and are great for scenarios; haven't played enough yet with the Shuttle to say whether or not it makes as big an impact.

The other pieces, IMHO, tend to be either more specialized (the Hawk is a team-support piece) or more finesse-based (A-Wings, Interceptors), and so may not be immediately necessary out of the gate.

  • Ken OKen O Registered User regular
The X-Wing and TIE both have good pilot/upgrade cards you didn't get in the core sets.

I've had fun using ships that aren't in the competitive lists. Pick up what you think will be the most fun flying around the table.

@Maguano as a new player myself, I can tell you my purchase order after I got the game for Christmas:
5 extra core sets via target sale (game away 2- I might have gone a bit overboard here...)
    (1) Xwing and (1) Tie expansion (for the cards- I love the options I picked up in here)
    (1) Y Wing and (1) Tie-Advanced The TA was totally worth it. the Y-Wing...well...the ion cannon doesn't feel like it's worth 5 points to me, but more experienced players on here know better how to use it- so maybe the Y-wing should have been a later purchase once I'm better.

I put the rest on my Amazon birthday list so hopefully in a few weeks I'll have the MF!

One thing you might be disregarding:

The Ion Cannon has a 360-degree firing arc. You can just fly around the main scrum and harass enemies that go after more your tempting targets, and with a good R2 unit and its fairly beefy shield+hull values you can feel confident in letting a single Y-Wing wander about the battlefield without an escort. If somebody does begin to come after it, it can fire backwards and deter enemies from following too closely. Even better, a hit with the Ion Cannon only does 1 damage, but it gives you a guarantee of knowing where the enemy will end up in the next turn (barring barrel rolls or boosts), which lets you get in good position for the next turn.

Basically, a Y-Wing's not flashy, it's not going to bring its pilot glory in battle... but it will leave your opponent cursing and distracted.
