For a couple of years now, I've had a noisy fan in my 9600xt Game Buster. I've done all sorts of things, oiling, sent it in to be professionally cleaned, etc. One dude told me (a practising computer seller and fixit with a shop) that I should use butter. oO That's the range of responses I've had on this issue.
Finally, I've been using my gf very quiet new dual core computer. And I've had enough of this fan.
I cannot afford to upgrade my computer, because I just don't have the money. I get around 30 dollars au to myself per fortnight minus expenses, so it's just completely out of the question to do that. How I wish I could.
About the only thing I could afford is a cheap other heatsink or fan to snap onto the card.
What I'm asking is, is there anything I can do to this kind of heatsink that will fix this problem. I would just rip the fan out, but the whole heatsink is designed around pushing air through it and has a crappy plastic cover. Here's a picture of it:
As you can see, the stupid advertising plastic on top probably impairs heat from just radiating out, otherwise I'd just try to downclock the card and rip off the fan. I don't use the machine for serious gaming anymore anyway, but what I do want to use it for drives me crazy with its whirr.
I'm slightly scared of just ripping it off without doing anything else because I think the XT's were overclocked anyway, and if I fry it even if I had the money I won't be able to replace it with anything other than someone elses second hand shit. It's too old.
I wish my motherboard had intergrated graphics so I could just rip off the card completely, but it doesn't.
PA, I need your technical know-how. Tell me how to permanently silence this whirry fucker in a way that wont fry the card. Downclocking, heatsink modifying, cheap alternative heatsinks, whatever. It just needs to be cheap, I don't care if its hard.
Just no more oiling, and definitely no more butter. oO
The butter, it haunts me...

I'd look into those.
when you do find a product you think would help.. type in that model # into google and look for reviews. see how well it's rated and give it a go. vid heatsink and fans should be affordable.
edit:
I'm looking through many reviews of that card and it says that it should be pretty silent... are you still covered under warrenty? maybe you can get it replaced.
another edit:
this product is only $40 and it's completely silent and it's made for your vid card.

Simply checking newegg yields a ton of options in that range.
EDIT: I meant that if you are going to spend that much money, you should at least get a card thats a bit better. You can do it for MUCH cheaper if you just need it for non-gaming applications.
There are cards on newegg that offer decent resolutions (again, non-gaming) for about $25.
you're right.. I didn't realize what gen this vid is.. it's old.
it won't take you long to save $100 even if you are tight on expenses. there are a great range of bargain cards out there that wouldn't take much.
or you can get some really crappy card for a couple bucks.

Thanks for the responses, if nothing else I might put the energy into trying to oil the stupid thing again. I wish it were possible to buy replacements fans for these things.
I don't think its under warranty scootch, and even if it was its about 4 years old, I have no idea where I might have put the receipt. I probably didn't keep it.
I went out and bought some WD-40 and applied it. The fan is nice and quiet now, but the computer stinks of that stuff. How long does it take for the smell to go away?
Not too long. It depends on how much you use, really. If it was a tiny squirt directly on the bearings, maybe a few days. If you drenched the whole thing, well, I hope you like the smell of WD-40.
That sucks ... up until this paragraph I just kept thinking "why doesn't this guy just use onboard video?"
The WD40 smell should go away within a day or two. I have to use it on my apartment's deadbolt lock like once a month (because it's installed all wrong).
It's so nice to have a quiet computer again. I didn't even take the fan off the card this time, I just pulled it up off its bearings slightly and squirted under. Hopefully it should last longer than last time I used some oil that wasn't wd-40, because this computer isn't on 100% of the time anymore like it used to be. Gf's get in the way of always on living.
I'm hoping for a month per application.
