What the fuck is this bug?

This little hellspawn and it's friend invaded our home tonight. Both are now dead, but two in one night makes me concerned. It looks almost wasp like, but didn't behave much like a wasp... It was walking on the floor and only flew when it tried to kill it. Also, very hard shell. I had to put significant pressure between my fingers to kill the bastard.

So, what fresh hell is this?

Edit: you can barely make it out, but there's a white spot on its back.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_wasp maybe?

I need to stop looking this up. Wasps terrify me.

I was thinking it was a wasp but it looks smaller than the normal wasps we get. Also, the walking thing, but that could be because it's nighttime.

Edit: also, allergic to their stings. Another reason I was hoping for something else. And not in my damn house.

I am thrilled that bugguide got linked

    it's a fantastic resource

anyway, the reason that didn't act like a normal wasp is probably because it's a solitary wasp rather than the social ones people are most familiar with

those guys are mostly looking for insects/spiders to paralyze and drag back to their nest

they're super cool, and to my knowledge mostly content to leave humans alone

I'm not really sure what it is beyond that, though

Ok, I defer to your knowledge. The white spot and lethargy was throwing me off. And yea, probably harmless, I worry about the pets more than anything - either the cats play with it and get stung, or the dog does and he goes back to the vet again for antihistamines.

    At any rate, thank you!

Edit: by solitary, you mean it's a loner? Like, not a hive creature? That confuses me. :p

There are many species or wasps that do not live in hives.

EDIT: If you already have a wasp phobia...I suggest not reading up on what they do in their free time.

It's completely fucking terrifying, but I try to be down with anything that eats other bugs.

Centipedes and non-poisonous-to-humans spiders will always find safe haven within my home.

You must not mean centipedes like we got in Hawaii because no no no no no no no

If I ever had 3 wishes, one of them would be no more centipedes. This is no joke.

    O_O No.

    Like these:

They are maybe an inch and a half long when they're old and slow.

    Fuck your centipedes.

What you have to understand is that the one Ceres posted is at most an inch and a half long. The one in the spoiler is eight fucking inches long. Also covered in armor plates.

Jesus Christ, ash. That monster is reason enough for me to practice my marksmanship, but I'm afraid I'd just make it mad. I don't feel so scared about this wasp now...

And yea, @ceres, we get house centipedes too. They creep my wife out, but they eat other bugs so whatever. I'm more concerned about ants getting into my flour and sugar than a bug that eats other bugs.

I'm more afraid of the house centipede than that dinosaur.

With the later, I will see it coming to eat me so there's time for last rites but those house fuckers sneak up on you.

I used to live in a place that had some closer to Ceres', though I think they were closer to 2-3 inches.

Not dangerous, but surprising as hell to have them show up out of nowhere, so I started dealing with them.

One of them ran across the kitchen wall while I was by the sink, so I grabbed a tupperware lid, held it over the little bastard and punched it.

    It kept running.

    O.O

I did not expect that. I'm no black belt, but I like to think I hit with some force here. Touche, mister bug, touche.

Luckily the second shot put it down, and I'm long past that apartment now, but man, these things.

one of the benefits of substantially lacking a central nervous system is that even having a big portion of your body smashed doesn't always stop you from running away

anyway, OP's wasp might be a bald faced wasp, which is technically a yellowjacket (sans yellow.) They are social and build paper nests, so maybe check around nearby eaves and trees and such and make sure you don't have one hiding nearby

hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
