The Future Has Arrived: Wireless Power, Now Where's My Hovercar?

meatflowermeatflower Registered User regular
edited April 2007 in Games and Technology
First off it's real, it's been approved by the F.C.C. and they've patented it. The company is called Powercast and they've already partnered with Philips.

The catch? Only works at distances up to 3 feet and it is described as working on "low voltage" devices. Still, a lot of possibilities. It's basically a radio transmitter plugged into a wall outlet that sends out a radio signal, the receiver is the size of a dime and can be manufactured for $5. You could basically have a zone on your desk where you set all your rechargeable electronics and they'd simply charge...or imagine your cell phone charging while in your pocket while you sit at your desk. Wireless mice and keyboards? No more changing batteries.

Article with all the details: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2_archive/2007/04/01/8403349/

Here's the company's website: http://www.powercastco.com/

It won a Best of CES award so it's not exactly breaking news. So yeah, it's legit. Also i don't think CNN Money would be the type to play April's Fools jokes.

I'm pretty damn sure we had a thread on this months ago.

And PS: How do you think RFID works? It's the same idea. This really isn't anything new, it's just the base tech of RFID taken to a larger scale.

You know how your electric toothbrush recharges when you put it back on the base, but no wires are touching?

Kind of like that, but the range is now 3 feet instead of a 1/4".

Yeah, wasn't this posted in the April Fool's thread?

Regardless, I still can't wrap my mind around the concept of electricity going through the air without, like, shocking you.

Great. We have a bazillion radio waves floating through the air already. Tumors galore. I keep my phone in my pocket, right next to my junk, so I'm already not having kids. And now they want to send power through the air? Sounds like a microwave oven to me. I'm down, as long as it doesn't make my dick explode.

Sorry I'm not omnipresent and aware of every thread ever. I did a search for Powercast...a thread for Wizardry 8 had the word occur twice and it wasn't in reference to this company.

Well, after reading the article it sounds pretty nifty. At this point in time, they say a PC uses about 10 times the amount of wattage one of these receivers can take, and that plus my consoles are the real power hungry devices in my house. So I probably wouldn't get much use out of it. Still, it'll be interesting to see what they come up with in the future.

A ten year study on cell phones just concluded, and the findings were that they don't cause tumors or cancer or any adverse side-effects (barring jackassery and bad driving) at all.

I was being a little facetious, yeah.

I work at a cellphone software dev house, so we have 300 phones mostly centered in one room. The room where I work. I'm surprised I don't glow.

It only has one direction to go: Advancement. Kinda wary of it though, because y'know how current wireless devices operate. "Oops, the wind blew, my router needs to be reset." (I'm trying to be cute, don't hate me)

I probably wouldn't understand a great deal of it, but I really want to see the technical "how's" of this also.

Didn't these people ever play Sim City? Total disaster in the making. First it starts with this, then sooner or later you've got microwave satellites torching entire neighborhoods because their power beam wasn't quite aligned with the receiver station. Before you know it, the people get pissed at you because there's no jobs, and godzilla's ripping up the financial district, and the trash hasn't been collected in a month and a half. You heard it here first.

When I read stuff like this, it makes me laugh (and sad) that there are still people in North America that really believe there are no other power alternatives for making a car move beyond exploding fossil fuels.

Yes yes, world economy addiction, etc. Oh well... I'll just go back to zapping my lunch in the microwave.

Also, I wonder what kind of practical implications there would be to put a receiver in a watch. I've always figured they never made leaps and bounds electronics wise due to their size and practical power supplies.

Huh? It's funny that there are some people who believe in hydrogen fuel cells? I don't know how funny it is...I don't normally laugh at science.

Just because this is power related doesn't mean it only works with electricity generated from "exploding fossil fuels".

Also as someone else said, this is only going to improve. Range, voltage, etc. I'm sure at some point (perhaps 10 years from now) every device will have one of these built in and there will no longer be power cords except for extremely high powered equipment (think construction equipment, like jackhammers).

    Some day.

Hmmmm, I'm no expert but I think this stuff works by having an antenna generate electro-magnetic fields that don't fit the definition of radiation. Which is to say that they don't propogate out to infinity. Hence the short range. Then you have a tuned antenna that is designed to absorb those fields. Maybe I'll try to look up the details.

The future has arrived, like 100 years ago when Tesla discovered this form of energy transfer.

Or at least someone similar to him, around that era.

This is hardly new nor high technology. Its also pretty fucking inefficient iirc.
