I've had people suggest selling prints but I always feel like most of my stuff is either done on commission or fan art of licensed characters. I know lots of people do it but I'd feel weird selling prints of things like my Batman villains or Adventure Time drawings or whatever.
I do understand the hesitation in that regard. I would buy art that you made without connections to licensed media though, For instance I've always loved the banner on your site, and your dino Christmas cards. If you made a hand full of pieces specifically to turn out a little product, you could probably get around that hangup and still turn out some beautiful stuff.
It doesn't seem like you are hurting for shit to do, so, its merely wishful thinking on my part, but I hope you seriously look into it. I mean, specifically stickers but its not like I've started a sticker collection and selfishly want dmac art to put in it. That would be silly.
It's a good idea. I'm trying to take a bit of a break from freelancing now that my day job is doing a better job of paying my bills again so in theory I should have more time to work on personal projects. The nice thing about prints/stickers/etc. is that if I go through a company that handles printing/distribution, in theory I can just sit back once the work is done and let the tiny residual checks roll in.
The Kickstarter campaign just launched for a pirate-themed card game I illustrated. I thought I'd share the process I went through to draw the Gunner character from rough sketchbook doodle to final color artwork.
Sweet! I saw them filming it at the airport a few days ago. There were a lot of high powered light setups and strobes for what I'm guessing were high speed shoots.
Wow, look at this beautiful crosshatching! It makes me want to draw horses, and i'm not really fond of drawing horses
I'd like to see your take on Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy using this rendering technique whenever you get the free time. If there's ever a character in fiction that would pair well with crosshatching it's that one.
Thanks. Although these are more for his parents' benefit at this point. I'm looking forward to him being old enough to request cool art for his room like monsters or superheroes
Did you do any for Halloween? Maybe a witch, or a jackolantern or an adorable maniac wearing a hockey mask and wielding a machete?
Sure, the last would probably get you banned from uncle duties, so it may not be worth it.
I've never really liked the look of super smooth/smudgy pencil shading. I used to do quite a lot of pen and ink work and the way that I built up tone in ink basically carried over into my pencil drawings.
It's genuinely exciting for me that my nephew is old enough now that he was really interested in looking at the pieces I did for him. Makes me as happy as any praise I've ever received about my work.
