We have a multiplayer server!
Keep in mind this is
passive multiplayer, which means you play alongside other people. Text chat, screenshot sharing, and the ability to trade .craft files to build each others' ships! Pretty cool.
1.
Get it here
2. Unpack the contents into your Kerbal Space Program root directory. klfClient.exe should be in the same folder as KSP.exe, and "overwrite" the GameData folder to add the multiplayer mod. Nothing is actually overwritten!
3. Launch KSP like normal, and let it fully load to the main menu
4. ALT-Tab out of the main menu and start klfClient.exe
5. Connect to: taytay.myftp.org (make sure UDP port 2075 is open if you have connection issues)
6. Go back to KSP and load your save. An interface window will appear, and the multiplayer mod should be working.
Do you like outer space? Do you like rockets? How about fire? Exploring other planets?
Explosions? The answers to those questions are "YES OF COURSE," and Kerbal Space Program is the game that brings all of them to you (often at the same time!).
The Game
KSP is a rocketry/orbital physics and space exploration simulator built on the Unity game engine, and is developed by
Squad. The game is essentially Lego spaceships wrapped in a model train set, and you, the aspiring space explorer, are let loose to reach for the stars as you see fit. The game is currently in development, and buying now will gain you free access to future updates and expansions.
Your astronauts are Kerbals, from the planet Kerbin. Your trusty dream team is made up of the boys at the op of the page, Jebediah Kerman, Bill Kerman, and Bob Kerman (no relation), along with a willing mass of Kerbal cadets. Starting with a pile of parts, the Kerbal Space Center, and a whole crapload of flags, it's your job to get the Kerbal Space Program off the ground! With your help, they can conquer the stars.
Build!
Launch!
Plan your maneuvers using prograde/retrograde/radial/anti-normal maneuvers and other fancypants jargon! Chicks love a guy who can quote the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation!
Travel to strange, new worlds!
Land on those worlds, and maybe even survive the landing to plant your flag! It could happen.
Until now, it's been a sandbox that spans a solar system of 8 planets and 9 moons. As of version 0.22, there's a Campaign Mode! Launch rockets, conduct experiments, and climb to the stars with SCIENCE! As you unlock newer and better parts with SCIENCE(!), you and your Kerbals will build, fly, and slam into planets with wondrous, advanced technology.
I've heard this game is hard as hell...
Okay, yeah, there's a bit of a learning curve. It's recommended you play through some of the tutorials, since having specific goals is a big help. People here in the thread are super smart, good-looking, and helpful, so ask questions and don't be afraid of looking stupid - I can't stress that enough.
Everyone builds a pointy bomb/lawn dart instead of an actual rocket on their first launch, so it's not just you. Real orbital mechanics and physics (mostly) apply in KSP, so expect to learn frequently via Rapid Unplanned Disassembly(tm) of your Kerbal spacecraft.
Is the game moddable?
Holy crap, is it moddable. There's a huge community of people making customized parts, textures, and ships, not to mention entire gameplay mechanics like information displays, resource collection, topographic mapping systems, you name it. The modders for KSP are pretty unbelievable, and you can check out a lot of it on the official forums or the (
http://kerbalspaceport.com/) Kerbal SpacePort.
Some examples of what modders have created:
Where do I get it?
Try the demo!
Direct from KSP, or
get it from Steam. You can go as far as the Mun (one of the moons around Kerbin), and it gives a great feel for the game.
KSP can be purchased
through Steam, and is fully integrated with automatic updates, community stuff, and all the Steam crap/goodness.
You can also buy the game
directly from the developers, which has its own standalone launcher/patcher. There's zero difference between the two, except that the Steam Version has, well, Steam. The "KSP Store" version can be converted to Steam, but the process only works one way (The Newell does not allow takesies-backsies on his devoured souls).
Show me videos that make me want to play this!
Okay!
They come out with some pretty great intro movies for each big version release:
The Jeb/Bill/Bob series were made with some extensive mods, and a heaping helping of movie magic, but they were all shot in game. When your wife/girlfriend/mother/boss asks what the hell you're doing with your free time, show them these:

It's pretty much the first boss.
Science cannot advance without heaps!
Scholar and a gentleman right here, people.
The only thing on my wishlist at this point is a full view of the tech tree. Science is at a premium, so I'd rather not just bumble around. Some nodes are just not worth the points.

Send me screenshots of you building/launching/traveling/landing/crashing and I'll choose some to put in the OP - as stock as possible, since it's supposed to be representative of the base KSP experience.
Also, a while back someone posted that insane pic of Jeb smashed against a Rockomax 64 tank as it launched into the upper atmosphere. That thing was so goddamn Kerbal I just have to post it. Anyone have a copy/link?
I've encountered a situation where a ship the previously functioned fine suddenly can't land because when my parachutes deploy, the work until full deployment altitude and then abruptly explode, launching my ship a few thousand meters into the air again before it crashes to the ground. I thought it might be a velocity issue, but it's happened at speeds as low as 60 m/s, which is substantially slow than a number of successful landings I've had.
Is this a known problem of some kind? Am I somehow terrible at rocket science?
Like, that is the thing for rocket science.
That sounds more like a bug than anything... what happens if you pop the chutes on the landing pad before you take off?
Also managed to get 550+ science on my first minmus mission.
fuck up once and you break your thumb / if you're happy at all then you're god damn dumb
that's right we're on a fucked up cruise / God is dead but at least we have booze
bad things happen, no one knows why / the sun burns out and everyone dies
On the way down through the atmosphere, I extended a solar panel thinking 60-something m/s would be okay, but imagine my heart attack when the thing flew away in a bunch of square panels.
Not nearly as much of a heart attack as when the parachute caught and all those panels landed back on top of the probe, though. Fortunately, I had another extendable solar panel for backup and a number of stationary panels, so aside from some panel pieces stuck on top of the probe and some busted stationary panels, nothing tragic happened.
The best part is that I used most of my 1200-something SCIENCE to buy a couple more tiers of science instruments, so we'll be going back another time!

EDIT: And now I'm bummed it's too late to suggest "Rocket Surgery" for the new thread title. Goddamn, Manley.
EDIT: Oh wow, such cosmic irony. Turns out I was able to nudge the old one back into Kerbin orbit and from there return him to the earth from which he came. Good night, sweet probe, and flames of atmosphere sing thee to thy rest.
It is at this point that I began to build a rocket for travel to Duna. However, the lack of a Mainsail engine at this point hampered progress. A few attempts were made with Skippers and quad-coupled LT-30s, but it wasn't enough to move the nuclear stage into orbit with enough fuel. Therefore;
Alterations to the previous Duna-capable designs are made, specifically with a sub-assembly'd lifter stage utilizing a central Mainsail with asparagused LT-30s hexagonally attached. This then led to the ninth (and final, for tonight) mission:
Very fun, to say the least. Very fulfilling. Having the R&D there to spur you along to travel to other planets is a great addition to the game. It inspired me to travel to Duna for the second time ever in my KSP career, and successfully land and ascend home from it for the first time ever.
Edit:
Wait a second, there's no ladders!!! Not going to be able to plant a flag on Minmus...
Minmus' gravity + jet packs = who needs ladders?
First craft I managed to get to the Mun. Unfortunately I had very little fuel left but it turns out that didn't matter; the damn thing tipped over and landed on its side, so Jeb's going to be roasting lots of space marshmallows until SCIENCE makes a rescue vehicle possible. (And I finally figure out how to target a specific part of the Mun to land on)

It sounds to me like you're still too fast when the chutes fully deploy. When parachutes go from partly to fully deployed, they suddenly cause a LOT more drag. If your descent isn't slowed enough by the half-deployed chutes, the sudden simultaneous increase in drag will rip them right off. The solution might be more chutes, or maybe fewer.

I'm working on a cute little video game! Here's a link for you.
It may have been triggered in an earlier stage, while you were still in space? 'Chutes only deploy when there's atmosphere to drag them out. Maybe you triggered it with your final decoupler, and as soon as the air was dense enough they got pulled out.

Good point! That was probably it!
Also, I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't any science to get while in a nice orbit around Kerbin.
the good news is I unlocked fuel lines last night so now I can get a proper asparagus staging rocket up and running
Time to asparagus this shit for maximum Delta V.
EDIT: When I opened the thread, Kool's post was not there. Coincidence! I THINK SO
Ahhh! I never would've even thought of using the engine-overheat-blowing mechanic as staging!

As opposed to dropping all outer tanks/engines and going to 1/7th the thrust.
Anyway, it basically maximizes your delta V by dropping fewer engines at a time while making it so that whenever you go to a new stage, all engines have maximum fuel.
So it's like an ogre?
Works better with larger rockets than smaller ones. If you did it this way with smaller ones each stage would only be a couple of seconds.
