What are those muscles on the ribs (more part of the back, under the arms). They are fairly big muscles. How do you work em so that you get massive rib muscles? All the girls like sexy rib muscles.

Intercostals, or serratus? I've never heard of targeted workouts for them. Most will be worked by normal abdominal or oblique workouts.Twist crunches in your ab work out for intercostals and for your serratus (serratuses, serrati?) do your milatary presses and normal pulley workouts.

    Pulley work out?

I do the military press (in front... I do it in front of my head or even with my head).

I also do pull ups. Both types... with hands towards bar and hands away from bar.

I don't have big meaty ribs though :(

The muscles you circled are intercostals. Do twist crunches, if you are in good shape do them on a ball. Chances are you work your obliques enough in regular abdominal workouts, but side bends and crunches work them, twists too. I don't know if you know but the obliques are the muscles on your waist where love handles sit. I like to work a heavy bag too, that gets upper abdominals obliques and "rib muscles" worked too. But standard disclaimer, please don't begin a routine based on my late night insomnia. If you are a member of a gym saying "intercostal" and "oblique" to the staff should get you enough. It is there job to acclimate you with equipment.

Pulley workouts are usally standing exercises using a machine where a pulley is literally used. Generally done for arms back and shoulders. If you home gym it look into exercise bands, you can do alot with them. I like heavy pants, back flys, and lawn mower pulls ( i have no idea what they are really called.) You can also do most of these with standard dumbells.

But please look up all execution of the exercises before starting, I don't want to confuse you into hurting yourself cause of a bad description.

oh my god that picture looks horrible

Don't go nuts on that part of the body alone, you'll end up looking really weird. They're handy muscles to work on, but I've never met a lady who loves them the most. Shoulders > ribs ;)

Obliques are easy to work out, but that's not even the muscle you're asking about though.

To work out the obliques (you should be working out the abs and lower back too then) just get a dumbell in one hand, stand up straight, legs shoulder length apart, bend down to the side (this is the side holding the dumbell) and then go back to starting position. So basically, kind of slide (don't really touch your leg at all) your arm down the side of your arm. Do that on both sides and that's one set.

Here's a pic so you can understand better

The larger muscle group are the latissimus dorsi and the smaller, rib like muscles are the serratus anterior. You can work the large ones by doing wide grip pull ups, bent over rows, seated rows, etc... and the serratus don't really have a specific exercise. They get worked when you work your core. The best way to get them to show well, is drop drop to a ridiculously low body fat percentage (3-7%) but it isn't really sustainable and probably not safe. The guy in the spoiler pic only looks like that for 2 - 3 weeks out of the year, the rest of the time he looks quite like any big guy you might see.

serratus anterior can be worked with pullovers, those also strengthen your intercostals.

Lie on the bench and pull the weight over yourself. That guy in the animated gif is not lieing on a bench but only his upper back and hes not stabilizing very well. Thats why his body swings.

That makes more sense. It looks less prone to massive spinal injury! Thanks Much!
